Anderson Varejao Trade Ideas

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'd be very surprised if they traded Andy now, especially for a trade like this. Holding him until the deadline (assuming he doesn't get hurt again) lets contenders figure out where they are, and what they're willing to deal for Andy. There's a reason most major trades happen at the last minute at the deadline. Unless Love is involved - which I'm sure he's not - there's gotta be better deals out there that will emerge than one with Minny.

Kahn really needs the T-Wolves to make the playoffs this year. With Love out indefinitely, and Rubio still making his way back, they may need to make a move just to stay in it until those 2 guys come back.

Yeah, from the Wolves perspective I understand, but not from the Cavs' perspective. Makes no sense to deal him now for the pieces they have (minus Love) unless the injury is bigger than we're letting on - but in that case, he probably wouldn't pass physical in Minny. I just don't see it from our side. Waiting will give us more options.

The problem is that most contenders don't have anything we want. Oklahoma is the only true contender who has the assets we'd require for Varejao.

Who we will be dealing with is a fringe team who needs to either make a legitimate playoff push (like Minnesota) or a team that's projecting to be in the playoffs but needs to add another piece (such as Golden State).

MSB asked BS if he had a muscle tear as was reported in the Brazilian press and we got a BS answer. When there is smoke there is often fire.

OK, so assuming we deal Andy for Pek, what will we end up having to sign him for to keep him during the offseason, and how might that affect our 2014 cap space?

I'm still lukewarm on trading him, mostly because we would miss him when we are back in the playoffs (which I think could be as soon as next season)...but if we did I'd be ok with Andy for Derrick Williams and a future #1 pick (they would probably have to include someone else for salaries to match), I know we were high on Williams before the 2011 draft, there were even rumors that we tried to move up from 4 to get Kyrie and Williams. I think Williams really suffered from the lack of a summer league and training camp last year, and being moved between PF and SF hasn't helped...he needs to focus 100% on being a SF, which he could do here, even though things haven't worked well for him so far, he is still incredibly talented and athletic.

To be fair, he was a total dick about it.

I won't deny that at all. He stroked his ego in a shameful way and then tried to make it look good by giving the proceeds to a charity. But what's done is done, and people that can't let it go are the reason people love to hate on Cleveland sports and their fans.

I don't like the idea of trading for Pek personally. It wouldn't be too bad if he had a contract that was longer than this year, but he is going to get SUPER overpaid like Asik did in free agency.

In this day of age if your center is good your paying 10mill for him just look at deadre jordan an above average center getting payed. Atleast Pekovic can score the ball and spread the court he will provide the low post scoring the we will need in the playoffs. He is a better sign then milsap and al jefferson that people wanted

Yea, heard Rizz say it aswell this morning. Flew by that 'little' anecdote like it was nothing and continued with his Browns searching for a Head Coach banter. Hopefully some links will pop up soon as to how serious Grant is with this.

You can do worse than having Pekovic as your starting center. It may not be a bad trade for the Cavs. He may cost a bit down the road, but when the Cavs are a playoff team, who would you rather have at center that can provide similar production? Bynum is too much of an injury risk.

I would personally be thrilled if the Cavs could swing a trade for Pekovic. Personally, I would rather they trade for Williams/Pekovic than do a swap for Love. Not to say that Love isn't an outstanding player that I wouldn't be excited to get as well, but good centers are hard to come by nowadays. It has become a very guard-oriented league. Pekovic is putting up solid numbers with good shooting percentages. He is due a big pay day, but a solid big man is invaluable in today's league. I think his numbers are about to go up even further now that Love has re-fractured his hand, if the reports are true.

Williams would allow Gee to move back to the bench as a powerful scoring punch with the second unit. It would also save the Cavs from spending their draft pick on a 3, and they could instead spend it on a 2 or another big man (or they could trade it for another proven commodity).

I love Andy, and he will always be one of my favorite Cavaliers, but they are never going to get a better chance to sell high than right now. They need to strike while the iron is hot. That is why they should not wait for the trade deadline in another month and a half. It's time to turn all of these assets that they have into impact players and depth.

I'd take Pek in a heartbeat. Big, strong, good scorer and rebounder and he just turned 27.

On a side note, did Asik really even get overpaid? 3 years $25 mill seems like a bargain for a double double guy that plays top notch defense.

I think it's pretty clear at this point that Williams is not a 3. He just needs to focus on being a face up 4 and stop with the charade.

See, now I tend to disagree. I think he needs to just focus specifically on being a 3, and he can do it. That's just my opinion though.

Agree with all of that.

I do think Williams could play the three (or even a small-ball five) occasionally to exploit match-up disadvantages (not that Byron Scott ever does that), but he is a four.

I think the main benefit to acquiring Williams with Pekovic in a potential trade is that we could potentially flip Williams later for a different piece. Adding another young asset to the roster is never a bad thing. Even if he doesn't fit you can always move him for someone who does.
