Re: Breaking: Joe Paterno is dead
I'll never excuse what happened, let's get through that first. It's probably the worst sports-related story I've ever heard, and one of the most disturbing stories on any general topic I've ever heard.
That said, I find it interesting that a website that was able to deduce the politics surrounding the OSU scandal cannot see some similarities in this one. Some lower coaches were making some mistakes, the University itself was reaping in money hand over fist due to it's gridiron success, nobody wanted the word of the bad press to get around... we have heard this story before, albeit on a much lower scale.
So Tressel has some knowledge he doesn't want to have, and he goes to the school's administration with it. He is blamed in the media while the assistant coaches get off scott-free and no administrator loses his job.
Sandusky is, rightfully, going to go through the gambit in the legal process. Joe Paterno is the focus of media scrutiny until he dies, but the administrators he reported it to are still employed, and the building that people were raising funds for in the past ten years is still standing.
Tressel could have done more. Paterno could have done more... but the people who were informed by these coaches sure as HELL could have done more.
I don't buy into scapegoats as easily as the media wants me to. There are a lot of unclean hands, and it's a shame when the head coach gets the brunt of it just because his name is the most recognizable.
