Browns 2016 Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Anyone else come away from the season not all that impressed with Collins?

I'm not opposed to resigning him, even at an exorbitant price, but that's mostly due to the cap situation and dearth of rostered defensive talent. Just curious what others saw, besides some occasionally obvious athleticism, that makes him worth a huge investment.

#fakenews

LaCanfora is awful and terrible and can't be trusted.

From someone who hates LaCanfora, hes actually not a bad reporter when he sticks to reporting. It's the editorial side of him when it comes to the Browns that irks me. And his practices when it comes to the draft.

Collins came to thhe Browns around what..... week 6???? He had to learn a new defense, new team mates. Not to mention the culture shock of going from the Pats to the Browns. The man is a 26 year old stud linebacker. You add him to Ogbah, Shelton, Nassib, Garrett, Meder and 1 or 2 others I am forgetting and you have the core of a dominate defense. Add the fact that we now have Greg Williams and his attack style scheme..... this defense should be fun to watch.

Obviously a great athlete, can rush the passer or get sideline to sideline, fantastic in run support. He looked good in Cleveland, but without additional playmakers around him there is only so much he can do. That's when he can get in a bit of trouble trying to do too much. With Garrett + more defensive players drafted he will only get better and better.

Completely agree with all the points you guys have brought up. I'm aware of his history and the limitations of the Browns current defensive personnel and last years scheme.

I'm just asking if during his time with the Browns Collins particularly impressed anyone? For a player with his pedigree I expected a bit more. And again, I'm not suggestion the Browns shouldn't resign him, even for a whole bunch of money. So far I've just come away from the Jamie Collins experience a bit underwhelmed and was curious if others saw something I didn't or if most are looking ahead to the potential impact he can have.

He impressed me. Ton of energy, played the most downs on the team since the trade, quick and instinctive. Don't talk yourself out of it.

He got beat a couple times on the pass for long gains/TD's, but what LB doesn't against a WR?

This would be a massive signing. Even though we have a ton of money, I still don't want to throw that ridiculous $100 million w/e deal. Pay him above market, but nothing outlandish like that.

There is no way you let a guy like Collins walk when trying to rebuild a franchise. His commitment will send waves throughout the organization & league. It sends a message that CLE is looking up and more guys will look our direction and actually contemplate signing here.

I don't think players are quite there yet, but it is absolutely a step in that direction. I'd think if the Browns show signs of improvement this year and go into next season with the staff in-tact, we'll see more momentum then with FAs.

Keep in mind, the Browns have had a coach in place for more than two consecutive seasons only twice since the return (Butch Davis 01-04 & Romeo Crennel 05-08). It's been a long time since a coach made it through the second season of their tenure...

What were you expecting from him?

We allowed 5.9 yards per play, which was good for 27/32 and 1/10 of a yard per play from being the worst.
We allowed the 2nd most yards per game.
We are 4th last in rush yards per attempt allowed.
We are 5th last in pass yards per attempt allowed.
3rd last in sack percentage.

In other words, the core is not complete. They are clearly too young, make too many mistakes, and lack the talent to win 1-on-1 match-ups in the front 7, and lack the talent to cover anyone.

Williams will help. Time and experience will help. Health will help. Garrett will help. BUT, let's not get crazy here. Let's shoot for some timely stops and turnovers, with a defense in the top half of the league in 2 years. Nothing wrong with "fun to watch," but make sure to have patience.
