The Jarvis Landry Thread: Bless 'Em

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He’s not getting paid superstar money? I’m sorry, but that doesn’t make one lick of sense. He got 47M guaranteed!

It’s the third biggest contract for a WR.

Look at the guys near him.

Dez Bryant and Demariyus Thomas aren’t getting anywhere close to Landry on their next deals.

Julio is already 29 and has three years left on his deal. No real incentive for the Falcons to give him an extension any time soon. Antonio Brown has three years left on his deal as well.

Odell Beckham and AJ Green will get bigger contracts within the next 12 months, but outside of them, who is realistically going to get a bigger contract in the next three years?

Landry is going to maintain his place in the top 5 highest paid WRs for the foreseeable future. He’s unquestionably being paid like superstar.

Because if he was a superstar he would have gotten the most money per a year, the guaranteed money is to front load it, and the latest free agent always gets big money.

I don’t understand.

If we are saying $15 million/year is a gross overplay....

And $12 million/year would’ve been a good deal...

Are we really going to miss that $3 million/year when we have $75 million of cap room and about to roll over more?

And if a big chunk of this is signing bonus and being front-loaded?

We’re good. Settle down guys.

I think you're a really good poster, but this is some real nonsense.

Let me preface this by saying QB is the positional exception to this rule.

But at every other position, if you're being paid as one of the three highest players at that spot, you're being paid like a superstar. There's no other way to slice it.

The Browns paid Jarvis Landry like he's one of the five best WRs in the NFL.

He's a good player, but he's obviously not that THAT good.

Jeez people....it's Jimmy Hallam's money. Why do you care? He's a crook who stole from poor working class truck drivers. This is literally what the GOP tax cut claimed it would do. Give employees bonuses out of the tax cut for the ultra rich. (This is basically the only example of this happening since the cut btw)

I agree about the quarterback position. You lost me on the rest of it. The five most talented players on the Browns roster, not including QB, are probably Zeitler, Collins, Garrett, Bitonio, and Landry, in some order. Nobody is going to pay Flash Gordon big money, no matter the talent level. Garrett is on a rookie deal, Bitonio and Zietler were front loaded and play a lower salary position.

Landry is making Jamie Collins type money, and the Browns acquired him pretty much the exact same way. Unless you prefer dogmatic alignment to the money ball ideals over creative acquisition of talent, there isn't much to be mad about. The use of roll over cap is a strategy, and I don't see why people are worked up about being strategic in turning around the Browns.

I'm not saying I'm mad about it.

I just think it's silly for Lee to say that Landry isn't being paid like a superstar WR when he unquestionably is. That's all.

I don't think using the "they have the money!" rationale to justify paying 25% more than a player is worth is a viable strategy long-term, but Dorsey is in the business of winning as many games as he possibly can as fast as he possibly can, so I get it.

I'm really happy we locked up Landry for 5 years. Average of 15 mil/yr? So what. Unless his contract is 15 a year guaranteed, I don't see any issue. Even then it will take a few more big long term deals to put us in a position to worry.

Our rookie QB will be ready for his 1st extension when Landry's is up. Garrett will already have his. Larry O will already have his big deal if he continues to out play his draft slot. Our entire oline will be out of their big deals. I know that we have youngsters that will be do for new contracts by then as well, but why would anyone be upset? Be cautious, that's fine, but upset just seems like a reason to complain just to complain.

Over 400 receptions the past 4 years? Yes, please. He might not put up 1200 yards a year, but ask yourself how many times the past few years that having a reliable wr that will make that sure handed catch even for an almost guaranteed 70-80 yards a game and our past garbage we have endured would look so much better.

Add in the QB we traded for is known for going to the drop down in his progressions and this signing is a no brainer. Let's not forget that Haley has seemed to really feature the slot wr in his offense the past few years.

Not pointing fingers. But I swear I remember the majority of this board grumbling about us doing nothing for our wr core outside of late round darts that have not amounted to much. Let's rejoice. A young, productive, talented football player WANTED to sign up long term for us, the Cleveland Browns. Slight overpay? Who knows. We don't have the terms of the deal and he hasn't played a snap for us yet. I'm really happy he signed up with us. We haven't signed any skill position players entering their prime. It's always been the big guys nearing the end of their prime that we have only seemingly been able to sign.

Well that’s also a good point

With the money burned on the Dwayne Bowe’s and Kenneth Britt’s of the world this will Be money much better spent

There’s really no negative to it.

I was all in on either Watkins or ARob for the right $. And so were the majority on here (ARob more than Watkins). But giving Watkins that ridiculous contract for basically not having a great season in his career yet + injuries. Or ARob getting $1m/yr less than our deal to Landry....

...and he had 1 catch last year. Coming off an ACL.

Once again, we had the money. Productive as hell WR.

And shit, with his known good presence in the locker room, and great career so far, could he be the perfect mentor for Coleman?? Coleman is entering that 3rd year make or break year..let’s see what the perfect slot WR can do for his game.

By the time the deal is over, $16 million per may be pretty average for any solid WR.

So if whoever plays quarterback cant find him, it's not the reciever.. eliminate the vsriables...

Drastically over thinking the contract. In the NFL, the guaranteed money is all that matters, which is 47 mil.

He was scheduled to make 16 this year, and they’re paying 31 over the remaining 4.

That’s, after this year, 7.75 mil plus inscentives. Which is exactly what everyone thinks he’s worth.

This isn’t how NFL contracts work.

If Landry plays out the entire 5 year contract, he’s getting 75.5M dollars.

It’s *not* a 5 year, 47M dollar contract with 28M worth of additional incentives based on production.

I haven’t seen the full breakdown of the contract, but I do know that only way Landry doesn’t get all of the 75.5M money is if the Browns release him.

So yes, he’s only “guaranteed” 47M (and he’s actually only truly guaranteed 34M at signing), but he’s getting a lot more than 47M unless he gets released after 1 or 2 seasons.
