The Jarvis Landry Thread: Bless 'Em

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This isn’t how NFL contracts work.

If Landry plays out the entire 5 year contract, he’s getting 75.5M dollars.

It’s *not* a 5 year, 47M dollar contract with 28M worth of additional incentives based on production.

I haven’t seen the full breakdown of the contract, but I do know that only way Landry doesn’t get all of the 75.5M money is if the Browns release him.

So yes, he’s only “guaranteed” 47M (and he’s actually only truly guaranteed 34M at signing), but he’s getting a lot more than 47M unless he gets released after 1 or 2 seasons.
Don't we have the flexibility to do that down the line though (in 2 or 3 years)? If he sucks we release him after 2-3 years. If he's not that great, but he likes it here, we ask him to take a pay cut down the line (when theoretically we are trying to keep a good team together).

We are one of the shittiest teams of all time, overpays are in the equation. They'll work if the player is actually productive, when they don't work is when the player turns into Albert Haynesworth or Suh.

I'm guessing the Browns will still have about 5 years until the cap needs to be really managed...when whichever QB they draft now is done with his rookie contract.

Can't believe some are upset with the extension Landry got from the Browns.

I know we don't know what he will do for us, but he's been very successful in this league and he's a playmaker. This offense had next to nothing on offense last few years, so seeing Landry out there at wide out will be such a major sign of relief.

I always knew he would get overpaid a little. He was always going to be, from the moment the Browns did the trade with Miami he was going to get paid.

This team also has a ton of cap space still.. One player isn't going to completely change that. Once we get through the draft and get down the road another year or two, then you start to see who is here long-term and that's when you hand out contracts and start to be smart with them.

People can be happy the Browns kept a good player and also be cognizant of the fact that it’s not smart business to pay a 25% premium on something just because “you have the money”. Call it 0-16 tax or whatever you prefer, but that obviously isn’t a viable long-term strategy.

Those two thoughts aren’t mutually exclusive.

Landry is probably a tad bit overrated but he's a HUGE addition to this team - no question about it. Also, this type of move might make some other guys more willing to buy in to what Dorsey and the Browns are selling.

LISTEN, we've been trash for 20 years. TRASH! This could very well be the first domino in the greatest Browns offseason in recent memory. Live it up, boys. We deserve this and MORE!

Jarivs should not be taking outside snaps for the Browns. If you're acquiring him, you're acquiring him because he's a slot WR. He isn't athletic enough to start as an outside WR in the league.

This could go bad. I'd rather it say they plan to play him all over the field. But I agree, Jarvis didn't make his name on the outside.

Have we talked about how laughably bad Hue & Co are for lining Jarvis up on the outside yet?

If you click on it, the rest of the "story" should kind of put you at ease a little bit...

"The Cleveland Plain Dealer expects Jarvis Landry to "start on the outside."

What this really means is that Landry will feature in two-receiver sets. There's been talk of the Browns using Landry down the field more, but the reason he was paid $47 million guaranteed was because of his prowess in the slot. OC Todd Haley isn't about to make Landry a completely new player. 64.8 percent of Landry's 2017 snaps came in the slot. That's not a bad over/under for 2018."

I am basically reading that as he will play outside in 2WR sets and move back to the slot in 3/4WR sets.

The problem becomes how many 3/4 WR sets are we really going to run IF Gordon isn't here? If Gordon is out and we have a 3WR set with Landry inside, who is the other outside WR? Callaway is the only one that it could potentially work with if he lives up to the hype. I really don't want to see Higgins or Janis out there getting consistent playing time. If Callaway doesn't live up to it, I'd rather Landry be the other outside WR and have Njoku/Duke/Devalve? as the slot or just run 2 TEs instead of trying to force Higgins/Janis/Callaway on the field.

Hopefully Gordon returns and that isn't something we have to worry about.

I'm sure they'll keep giving Coleman a shot on the outside. They could also use Duke in the slot or motion to create more looks for the offense. Hopefully, Haley will use njoku as a big receiver in the red zone too.
