Browns trade for Patriots' Jamie Collins

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Collins is worth a first round pick IMO if he's on a longer contract. Given we get compensation if we lose him, it would have been pretty dumb not to make this move.

I think the Patriots are big losers in this trade IMO. And this lowers their chances of winning it all (another perk for us).

I would have cut ties with either Hightower or Butler before Collins. I think this is Bill being arrogant more than smart, but we shall see.

Oh my gosh Adam Schefter is acting like this is a great move for New England. The guy is such a hack.

Don't even bother watching ESPN, you'd think Jamie Collins is a bum all of sudden listening to these idiots.

As soon as Belichick trades a guy, everyone in the media lines up to bag on the player and acts like Belichick must know something no one else does.

Then guys like Richard Seymour/Chandler Jones go out there and crush it for their new team. This is about money, not talent.

Collins would have to be an abject moron to sign before hitting FA. The move is not 'no risk'- the Browns could be easily embarassed if either he leaves in FA despite the Browns offering more OR if the Browns get outbid on the guy they desperately need- but it certainly is ' high reward' if they can use the rest of the season to convince him to hitch his cart to this horse. Hopefully Huge Action can pull this off.

Comparing players at different positions isn't easy, but IMO Joel Bitonio isn't in the same stratosphere as Jamie Collins.

Bitonio has been good, but he hasn't built upon his outstanding rookie year and has spent too much time on the IR the last two years.

On the flip side, Collins is one of the best 3-4 linebackers in the NFL right now.

Don't be surprised when he signs for Von Miller type money, because the list of LBers that can cover and rush the passer at equally high levels is small.

CJ Mosley and Luke Keuchly are the only guys that can turn and run better than Collins, but those guys play strictly inside and rarely rush the passer.

Justin Houston and Kahlil Mack are better pass rushers, but they're not nearly as effective when asked to drop into coverage.

The guys Collins compares to for me are stars like Von Miller and KJ Wright and Navarro Bowman, versatile chess pieces that can be moved around and excel at anything.

Still in disbelief we only had to give up a late 3rd rounder for him.

Collins is worth Miller money. I think they got rid of him because he started butting heads with the organization. Once you do that you're gone. The Patriots won't pay players they think are now a distraction, regardless of how good they are.

They are a very arrogant organization and always think they can replace you.

Good write up. Also this stuck out to me. I was thinking about it and if you told me we traded the Eagles pick for him I still would have been pretty damn giddy.

I think this was an A+ trade for us. And now the defense will actually be fun to watch. This was just a huge addition

In a single move DePodesta got a better player than Farmer ever managed to obtain. Feels good to be on the receiving end of a deal like this.

I've never felt better about a winless team in my life.
I dunno, man. I was pretty confident about the Cavs 2015-16 season after losing to the Bulls :chuckle:.

But yeah, this seems like an outstanding move on paper. I'm curious if there is anything else going on regarding why the Patriots wanted to trade him; but nonetheless, I can't see this move being any worse for us than a win-win trade.

This deal is just too good to be true. Something is up with this guy. I'm sure we will find out sooner or later when he gets acclimated to the Browns culture.

ESPN might be biased as hell and bad at what they do, but I see the value in looking at both sides of this trade. From what I can gather:

GOOD:

* The Browns have been very poor in free agency for the past two years. This is an out-of-the-box way to shift the way free agents view Cleveland as a destination.

* The Browns have been searching for an impact outside linebacker without much success since Jamir Miller got hurt. Outside linebacker probably has more influence on a game than any other position outside of quarterback.

* The loss of a third rounder this year gives Belichick his FA compensation a year earlier, but it definitely gives the Browns an advantage for next year. I didn't expect the team to switch into being buyers just two months after gutting the team of veterans, but the team has a leg up convincing him to stay rather than making a cold call in free agency.

CONCERNS:

* Pro Football Focus will admit they cannot predict blown assignments on the defensive side. So while ESPN might be sitting back looking for any reason to say Boston won the trade, there could be legitimate fire when you see smoke. If Collins free lances and leaves the defense exposed where he had a contain responsibility, other players get downgraded for his choices.

* Let's not ignore the likelihood that the Browns will lose out their remaining games. The defensive backfield is still a hopeless mess. How does losing effect Collins? Plenty of quality Browns players wanted to leave in free agency to get away from toxic losing and a toxic environment.

Don't jinx it. *knock on wood*

This guy is gonna love playing with Myles Garrett.

Ogbah, Nassib, Collins, Garrett...good Lord.

It's kind-of like the mentality the Pistons seem to be employing... "We're not going to win these guys in free agency, so we trade for them now before that point comes." The major difference being that the Pistons have been trying to get players under contract or who are under the control of the team. In the NFL, you have the tag, so a move like this is a bit more protected.

The Pats are so so smart. They clearly look for players whose play is severely undervalued based on their contract at certain positions.

With that said. Collins is going to be a fantastic addition to a nice young defense thats heading in a great direction. I just hope we don't have to pay him Von Miller dollars because there is no way he's worth that kind of cash.

Jamie, I apologize.

Same thing with Chandler Jones. Unless they're committed to building the defense around you and you aren't willing to re-sign on the cheap, you're expendable.

No we have to resign a lot of players on defense like Hightower and Butker and Hightower is the qb of the defense. There was no way in hell BB was giving Collins a Miller type deal
