Building a Gaming PC

What are the competitive advantages of 16:9? Curious, coming from a competitive Halo background, but not CS..

Is this like where guys are playing 4:3 "stretched?" At some point, doesn't it make more sense to have a wider-field of view?

In regards to CS, the different uses between aspect ratio's comes down to a number of factors.

For 16:9, you get the full field of view that CS has to offer. While this would cause you to ask the question "Why would you use anything else?", a lot of CS players have their monitors extremely close to their face. I'm talking <1 ft from the monitor. If you sit this close, you don't get a very good peripheral anyway.

For 4:3, you get black bars. CS players like this for a couple reasons. 1) They come from previous iterations such as CS 1.6 where 4:3 was standard to play on, or 2) They sit extremely close to their monitors so the extra width doesn't matter/is distracting.

For 4:3 stretched, which is what I use, you cause your view to stretch, effectively making the models you're shooting at wider. Wider target = Easier target. The trade off to this is that your sensitivity feels weird. Since your resolution is stretched, moving horizontally vs moving vertically isn't as smooth anymore. If you only play CS, you get used to it and it doesn't really affect you. If you play a wide array of FPS games it can cause you to lose some flick reactions.

Ren changing your monitor settings or aspect ratio has zero effect on the hit box. It may make you feel like it does, but the hit box is server side.

This is true, but it stretches everything. The server side stays the same, but what you see is fatter, including hit boxes/models.

Stretched:

Black bars:

What you see is larger however it doesn't change the hit box, the hit box is always the same size. So in this case you could should on lets say the shoulder area of the larger image and still miss.

That's not true. As you said, it doesn't change anything in the game. What is being display doesn't affect how the game is being processed. The computer(and server) thinks I'm running with black bars, while my display shows the wider picture. Every movement I make would be processed normally, just displayed differently. This is why the sensitivity is somewhat messed up using stretched. Stretching has zero effect on the game play, other than showing your a fatter picture.

GTX 1080 TI is out. Discuss.

I'm amped that it's pushing the 1080 down to 500 bucks MSRP. Can't wait to snag one between 400 and 450 on a weird deal of some sort.

Sup broz! The lady needed a new GPU (currently on a 560 1GB), so I started browsing deal forums... Well I found out you can get an Asus 1060 6GB for $40 if you buy an HTC Vive for the low, low price of $800

So naturally I ordered the Vive + GPU, which also means she needs a new case cuz the 1060 is beefy, so she's getting a new case. So basically a new PC build and a Vive should arrive Friday

Holy fuck i still can't believe I got a Vive, I'll let you guys know if it lives up to the hype

Took the plunge. Time for a new build.

Scored an i7 7700k for 299 just now. Looking to build around it and a 1080. The 1080Ti coming out has bumped the 1080s down in price hopefully so that I can find one under 450.

Very excited about starting this process again. I'll be building entirely from scratch.

No clue how to build one, but I sometime soon I'll be starting look for a new laptop. And I would want to be able to play some steam and blizzard games on it. I'm not a hardcore gamer. Any suggestions? @gourimoko

All depends on your budget..

I gamed on a Lenovo Y510p for years while travelling. Laptop has SLI Nvidia GTXm cards which makes for pretty solid performance from a 4.5lbs laptop. Obviously there are newer models than this, but that was my gaming laptop for years.. I still use it regularly.

If you don't care about high FPS or ultra settings, IMHO, the best laptop on the market today is the Dell XPS 15 9560.

If you want something smaller than 15.6", the Razer Blade is considered one of the best line of gaming laptops that aren't outrageously priced; with the Stealth being interestingly priced alongside the Razer Core which would allow you to use an external GPU...

But again, all depends on your budget.

I'll start with these and decide how much I want to spend. I'll probably have more questions as I get further into the process. Thanks

Edit- looked at the Dell, hot damn. I will say I don't think I'm looking to spend $1800 on a computer. $1000 is my max probably @gourimoko

Here's where I'm at currently. Everything that's not marked as purchased yet is a placeholder for budget purposes, but I'm about 90% on that specific motherboard.

Patiently waiting for a quality 1080 to hit 450 and then this will be finished. That case is marked about 15 dollars over what I paid for it because I also picked up a couple fans in the same transaction.

SUPER excited to get this thing done. It should be a beast.

Once the hybrid 1080ti's come out I'm gonna try to sell my 1080 for like $400 used.. It's definitely one of the better units in the silicon lottery, able to hit 2.1ghz+ no problem, and runs like a champ.

You can't go wrong with the 1080... I absolutely love mine.. Only reason I'm upgrading is because I'm sick as fuck.. lol!! ;)

Yeah the 1080's new standard for performance at that value was what had me starting to look into stuff like 6 months ago. Prices on components have come down enough and my first system is finally showing enough age that I think now is a really good time to do another.
