Carmelo Anthony

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I just moved to texas and it is not a tax haven. While we don't have income taxes, property taxes are more expensive then ohio, insurance is much more expensive and basic services are more expensive everywhere, not to mention all the toll roads.
I don't think it is any cheaper to live here, despite the perceived "no income tax" savings.

Don't get me wrong...I would rather live here due to the weather (just got tired of the ohio winters..especially after this last one) but money wise, it is no different.

look at the math in my post, I did a spreadsheet to figure it out. We have to unload Jack and release Gee to clear the space to sign LeBron (without giving up Andy), so he's not still around for a sign and trade for Melo.

Indeed, my point was not literal, but in your math you are saying Jack is gone simply because you kept Andy's $9M contract. If we just renounce the rights of our free agents and trade Andy we'd have $31.2M in cap space. We could offer LeBron $19M and be left with $12.2M in capspace. Take out Wiggins' $6M and we'd have $6.2M.

We'd still have Jack, Thompson and Karasev on the books. That's $13.25M. We could then trade those 3 players for Carmelo Anthony at $19M. We do not need to send out $15M. There are quite a few ways to do this, but in this particular scenario, sending out $13.25M and taking back $19M leaves the Cavaliers below the cap, and thus any trade with New York, regardless of salary, is valid.

We have to send out 15 million in contracts in the sign and trade to take back 20.

Not necessarily. If we stay below the cap, we do not need to pay attention to the traded player exception salary rules. It's why I've said before, the Cavaliers should be doing whatever they can to clear cap space. An S&T with New York can be centered around draft picks as that's all they would get anyway, and we still have the ability to sign Melo outright. The only reason (in this conservative estimate) to do the S&T is because it makes the trade simpler and New York is compensated; but we don't have to S&T to take back Melo, we can sign both he and LeBron outright and clearing the cap wouldn't be an issue.

However it is to New York's benefit to accept the S&T prior to us finding a partner to take Jack/TT/Karasev and an unprotected first. Any team, or combination of teams, takes that deal and we can sign Melo without New York -- they aren't putting us over the cap. Thus, they have very limited leverage in any deal and are best with taking back picks and young talent.

I'd like to keep Kyrie, the #1 pick, Andy, Dion and Bennett. But we only have 11.6 million in contracts beyond that. Someone has to go, and the trade has to be something the knicks will take. They aren't doing a sign and trade where they get only get back our worst players

You're right, we can't keep all those guys. Andy has to go, or, we'd need to find something to entice New York to take back $15M in salary so that we can go over the cap.

I'm not willing to trade Bennett just to keep Andy for another year. I think Bennett will be highly productive in the future and on a reasonable contract. It makes no sense to trade him when you can get Melo and LeBron at almost what LeBron is making if he opts in.

Knicks are shaking things up and clean house: Looks like they are moving Tyson Chandler and Ray Felton to Dallas for Calderon, Dalembert, Wayne Beef Wellington, Shane Larkin, and 2nd rounders.

It's definitely a long shot, but I wonder if Phil and Fisher make something of the Larkin kid. He's undersized like Fish was, but is unbelievably athletic, plays hard, father was a pro's pro so he knows what being a professional athlete is all about from him already. Might be something, might be nothing.

Gouri has me convinced that Melo is coming to Cleveland. I can't believe I am even thinking this.

And Wiggins is #3. Embiid's not an injury risk, no way he doesn't go #1.

Felton is a train wreck, I'm sure they are glad to get rid of him. Chandler was quietly on the trading block for a year, but this is a lot less than they were asking before.

What is Dallas' motivation for such a deal? They can't believe Felton and Chandler will make that big a difference, can they?

It's Mark Cuban showing loyalty to Dirk by not tearing it down while he still has time left. I appreciate it and I think it reflects well on the Dallas organization.

It would be a stretch, but one could make the argument that the Mavericks were the second best team in the NBA last year come playoff time. They played the Spurs closer than anybody else. The Heat were blown out in 4 games and lost 4-1. The Thunder played them closer but the Mavs really played them the tightest although they both lost 4-2.

Mavs are better with Chandler. A team with Dirk, a big checkbook, and a decent weather/city life has a shot. They were defensively lame at center and point guard, average at small forward running two amazingly old guys..This trade addresses the center, and felton replaces Harris. They could sign Melo and pick up Ramone Sessions, and be pretty competitve. And there are point guards aplenty for this...

Chandler was a key cog in them winning a title four years ago. They're just trying to attain relevance in the West again while Dirk still has something left in the tank.

I don't think they wanted Felton at all. He was just part of the price they had to pay to take Chandler. There's a zero percent chance he's on the Mavs roster opening night.

Seeing that spreadsheet paying Kyrie $21 million while also potentially paying Lebron and Carmelo that much makes me cringe. You could make a legitimate argument that getting rid of Kyrie would be more valuable to the team at that point, when you consider the assets he could bring back and the fact that his actual on court value would likely diminish with Melo and Lebron. I really hate the idea of Kyrie + Melo + Lebron combining for $60 million.

You could?
