Cavs trade for 2019 lottery protected 1st, Knight, Chriss

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So we traded Hood and Burks for Chriss, Knight and a 1st round pick?

Good job by Koby. There were other tanking teams floating around this trade, he stayed with it and got it done.
Now the hope is they can hit on a few of these picks, while also positioning themselves to make moves next year with expiring contracts.

Hoping nets will give us Nuggets pick + Crabbe for JR Smith. Doubtful but would he a good get. Nets wanna be players in FA and Crabbe is sure to pick up his 18 M option and put a wrench in their FA plans.

I liked Chriss as a prospect. Has major attitude issues maybe getting traded for a 3rd time will set him straight. Doubtful but lots of untapped potential in Chriss.

He has some good defensive instincts around the paint that this team could certainly use.

Love is the vet who you build the rebuild around in year two or three, when the tank ends. Selling low now would be a mistake.

I didn't suggest we should trade him. I'm happy with keeping him around to be the mentor to the kids and teach them the right work ethic.

So we traded Hood and Burks for Chriss, Knight and a 1st round pick?
We got two seconds for Hood. So we send a second as part of this, so Hood and Burks net us Chriss, Knight, and a first.

We also got two seconds back when we acquired Burks in trade for Korver - and one of those picks is the Wizards 2021. So that could be a high second. Not sure which 2nd got traded today.

Regardless, barring a major turnaround next year, the Cavs got a first round draft pick for adding Korver to their team. Since that first will turn into two seconds after 2020, they got two seconds back in the Burks trade AND just got a first. So trading for Korver made them more than they gave in the first place.

That Burks move for Korver was pretty savvy.

Knight is also expiring next year. So is Tristan. So is Clarkson. And Henson. And Dellavedova.

The Cavs have $67,710,276 in expiring contracts next year.

That gives them a lot of flex to let some salary expire while also taking on other bad contracts for assets or getting some assets and using draft assets plus expiring deals to get established players.

The Cavs will be able to facilitate a lot of trades next year if they choose - and not many other teams are even close to them in the amount of ending deals on the roster.

But when does the tank end?

I think we hope to have two years of top ten picks, so 20/21 would be the first season where you try to pull out of the tank.

It all depends on what the offer is, really. Would a team like the Kings with a ton of cap space and some nice young assets think about trading for Love to bring in a vet and some legitimacy to lure a FA in as well to supplement their young core of Fox, Hield, and Bagley? They could trade for Love and still have max money to throw at someone.

If the right offer comes, you make the move.
