Cavs trade for 2019 lottery protected 1st, Knight, Chriss

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Chriss is a really dumb player. One of the lowest basketball IQ guys in the NBA.

This trade is about trading Burcs, Dan being willing to take on more salary, and nabbing a nice first round pick. It'll be nice to have two stabs in the first round.

I would love to find a way to get a third 1st for this year.

Likely, JR Smith for salary relief and a 2019 1st around draft time.

I think the two best paths for another first in this draft right now is Love. This summer, though, JR and - if he continues to play well - Tristan are both going to be valuable assets. I also think a desperate team in the East could find some combination of Clarkson, Delly, TT, JR, and Nance that could net us a first.

It is definitely possible. Altman has done a really nice job collecting assets so far. And I thought he was a bottom ten GM in the NBA last season. But he has really done nicely this season.

This draft isn’t as highly regarded. The next 2 drafts have some real home run power, so if we’re able to get another pick I’d prefer it not be this year.

He's worth taking a look at and is still young. I could see them re-signing him next year on an inexpensive deal with an option for the next year, though you never know if another team will see potential and sign for more.

I'd probably use the bi-annual exception on him if he'd sign it - or if we'd use it. We'd be hardcapped to the apron if we did, though that should be about $140M. Much depends on what happens with Smith and where we pick.

He's a good athlete but that's about it. There is a reason he flopped on a Suns team that is still awful and the Rockets. Chriss needs a really good, patient coach that can help him learn to read the floor. He's just really lost out on the court at all times.

Our coaching staff should really be able to unlock his full potential.

Still confused about the 2nd round pick.

ESPN mentions no 2nd rounder in their story.

Yahoo sports mentions a 2nd rounder from Cle to Sac....but gives credit to ESPN

Sam Amick on Twitter said the 2nd rounder was from Houston, not Cle.

I could see JR being traded for Mahinmi on draft night for the Wiz pick.

Maybe the addition of Stauskas and Baldwin changed things, that was the last thing to be reported.

Does the pick have to be lottery protected though? It's obviously not going to be in the lottery...so....

3 of the last 8 Number 8 picks involved in this deal.

Stauskaus was 8th overall.
Chriss was 8th overall.
Knight was 8th overall.

8th overall picks really suck.

I think teams do that just to protect against a worst case scenario. 4 thru 10 are only separated by 5 games in the west.

And he's not going to find it here - at least not right now. He was the big boom/bust guy a few years ago. Intriguing because physically he checks all the boxes you want in a modern 4.

I know he started late in basketball and was football/baseball before high school.

Depending on the coach, he's not a bad guy to look at on the cheap when you're rebuilding. You never expect much, but for a team like the Cavs it's worth trying every retread high potential pick of the past you can. His upside is certainly higher than Stauskas and Baldwin.

I think they also do have Bird Rights on him even though the option was declined, he has three years of service. So if they decide to re-sign Chriss they would not need to dip into the MLE or Bi-Annual to keep him, even on a team-friendly contract.
