I like the idea of a 'new logo ideas' thread

GV created a new logo for their Indians apparel this year...I like it:

(I'd made the C straight though instead of crooked)

I love the feather and this iteration of the logo. I just can't get past what Moz said... This is all on borrowed time; Indians will eventually go. It frustrates me at times because I love everything about growing up with this org, but it's coming and I'm trying to accept that in lieu of finding a great new logo in the spirit of Wahoo. Again, I do like this one though.

That is fucking sick

I'm not so sure. Only time I hear about the Indians name is from the protesters on opening day. Wahoo was something that was being written about across the country and discussed on national TV. The 'Indians' name hasn't gotten that kind of attention at all.

If the Indians name had to go, it'd be going now, IMO. Here's a quote from Dolan about it after it was announced Wahoo was going:

"Not only are we adamant about keeping the name Indians, but the Commissioner (Rob Manfred) is similarly supportive of the name," said Dolan. "Yes, some people will continue to make noise about that, but I'm not troubled by its use. The Commissioner is not troubled by the use of the name. We are confident the name will continue on."

Lets be real here for a second: Wahoo is going right now so we can get the All-Star game. That's it. Right or wrong, that is why Wahoo is going away after this year. If the 'Indians' name was a problem, it also would have been part of this "deal" to get the ASG. IMO.

I certainly think it's possible the name eventually goes, but I think that's a ways away because I'm not seeing where the pressure is going to come from for that to happen.

Cleveland Brown...skins?

I had a conversation with my students about the organizations decision to end the mascot Chief Wahoo today. Seventh graders are studying world history and were overall apathetic to the subject. Some took the step to ask "what if there were stereotypes of Asians or another group, would you feel the same way?" The eighth grade takes U.S. history and they were more emphatic against the Chief because they just studied the Trail of Tears and other actions taken against the Native American people.

Of course one thing they all had in common is having no connection to the franchise. I really do see this as the final step: Fans who see the good the franchise has done for the spirits of the city accepting a different experience than their own. The Chief is really a unique centerpiece for the broader topic of empathy: the level to which you can understand someone else's experiences are as valuable as your own.

So I had a quick contest for a new logo. Lots of kids making bows and arrows, one baseball that says "Cleveland" across the ball, one teepee, one feather over an "I" and a "C". I'm interested to see if the team can create a new logo that is marketable... That is the only reason Wahoo made it this long... No suitable replacement caught on.
Bows, arrows and teepees are all stereotypes that will in over time be labeled as insulting. How would Asians like it if we created a logo with stereotypical Asian instruments? Would they be insulted? If not give it time.

How many people in the US do you think believe all Native Americans wore feathered head-dresses?

I agree. The reason I assigned a new logo brainstorm is because it's challenging the kids to think of what is and is not a potentially offensive stereotype. It's harder than it appears!

Or that everyone in Ireland wears green, all Russians drink vodka, every Nigerian woman wears a gele, every Mongolian rides a shaggy pony, or every ancient Scot painted his face in woad....

When the time comes when there are no cultural distinguishing characteristics, either in current times, historical times, or in myth, I suppose all those things will be gone. I suppose we'd better stamp out all the cultural festivals so that all those inaccurate stereotypes can die their long-overdue death.

Ok. I call.

How many Irish, Russian, Nigerian, and Mongolian groups are being racistly depicted by the people who waged a genocidal war upon them?

None. But then, neither are Native Americans. The people who waged that war are very long dead. None of us alive today have anything to do with that, nor do we bear any responsibility for it.

You can't have it both ways. If you want to acknowledge that there are cultural characteristics generally associated with the historical background of certain people, fine. If you want to say they're aren't cultural characteristics generally associated with the historical background of certain people, that's okay too.

What's bogus is to have Native American cultural events that display some of those things, then criticize people for associating feathered headdresses with Native Americans.

What is the right number of people who need to be offended before someone simply does the right thing?

I don't need X number of Native Americans to be offended to use my brain to determine that the caricature of a Native American is at worst in poor taste.

If people can't cope with the loss of a mascot caricature, they've likely got bigger issues than we could imagine.

Outside of my of my terrible joke earlier, I agree 100%.

I said from the beginning go back to the Spiders and come up with a cool mascot. It has some history too. This allows us to move on and debate more important things.
