So Long Jordan Clarkson ( aka Chucky McJumperson)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Lebron gets little chance to play with rookie talent because 1) he's so good that his teams always draft late in the first round, and 2) the Cavs can't draft or develop players worth shit anyway. The Wiggins for Love trade looked like a no-brainer at the time, it wasn't about Lebron not wanting to play with a rookie, it was about Love being available. Lebron pretty clearly enjoyed playing with Cedi Osman this year.

Makes sense that he has been removed from the rotation when we could use a big defensive wing.

Clarkson was efficient with his relatively modest minutes, getting his preseason off to a strong start. The 26-year-old should enjoy a robust role this coming season irrespective of whether he's deployed on the first or second unit, as the Cavaliers are likely to give all of their young pieces plenty of run. Clarkson has ample ability to serve as a strong scoring presence at either guard spot, as evidenced by his career average of 14.1 points on 44.3 percent shooting through four NBA seasons.

He looks like a good player when he shoots over 60%, and if you blur your eyes a little bit and forget the past.

However he's a 43% shooter, which means we should expect a 25% shooting game on the near horizon.

At that time I will be a little sad as I watch him chip the paint from the rim with a basketball instead seeing pleasant team ball movement.

The stats do not tell the whole story. He kills so many offenses that does not go into stats by ballhogging.

I am hoping somehow can put together a great stretch (for him) and we can somehow dump him at the deadline or at least next summer.
Not a guy I want long term on this team.

Soon... He'll be shouting "aye and 1!" every shot he takes... Ball Hard 2.0, can get hot but you never now if you'll get the hot Clarkson or cold clunker every time he steps on the floor, seems like no in between games if hes good hes good when hes bad its really bad...

On a non basketball note surprised how he is covered by tats now... Thats a lot of ink for just 1 offseason

rooting for this guy because 1. he's a cavs 2. he's part filipino. He'll have all the shots in the world leading the second unit, it will be beautiful sometimes but ugly most of the time. Lesgo cavs!

You are right!! Looks like he got a new hobby.

Using this on twitter, lol

Man he would be an actual threat if he could clean up his act. Bad decisions and bad shots.

I was hopeful when they said Lue was taking him under his wing, but he looks like the same player

I am thinking he had two assists for sexton against the C's right?

https://923thefan.radio.com/article...n-lue-looking-jordan-clarkson-expand-his-game

Jordan Clarkson came to the Cavaliers last season as a score-first point guard who can bring instant offense off the bench. This season head coach Tyronn Lue is pushing Clarkson to expand his game and become a more complete basketball player.

"He worked hard this summer," Lue said. "I had a chance to workout with him three or four times this summer, going over some things, teaching him some things and he's come back in great shape ready to play."

Clarkson excells at playing fast and pushing the pace, something Lue has preached all training camp, but sometimes that can turn into an attacking mindset that causes tunnel vision and limit his ability to make the right basketball play.

.....

Being a true point guard, setting his teammates up for open shots is something that Clarkson has not been asked to do so far in his career. His job has been to come off the bench, push the pace and score the basketball.

While the Cavs still want Clarkson to do the things that have helped him make a name for himself in the league, they know there is untapped potential in his game.

"We all know what Jordan can bring to the table, we all know what his role is for our team," Cavs center Tristan Thompson said. "He's our scoring punch off the bench, gives us that energy, gives us that spark. Lue has done a great job coaching him, mentoring him. We all know he can score the ball. I think the next step for Jordan is in the pick and roll, being able to make that second and third play. The cross-court pass to the three or the big is rolling, pocket pass or the lob, there's different options. We know he can get the mid-range jumper, that's his sweet spot. That's the next spot of his progression and I think he's done a good job in working on that."

.....

Lue was asked where Clarkson has improved the most so far in camp.

"Reads. Setting his guys up on pick and rolls where he's more free to get his shot off. I think the reads with bigs rolling, making the different passes, he's picked that up."

.....

"You haven't seen a lot of passes yet but he's been working and he put the work in to get better at that," Lue said.

If the 26-year-old can hone the skills of a passer while possessing the ability to be an instant scorer off the bench capable of going for 20 points on any given night, this season has the potential to be a breakout one for Clarkson.

This is the key from that article:

"If the 26-year-old can hone the skills of a passer while possessing the ability to be an instant scorer off the bench capable of going for 20 points on any given night, this season has the potential to be a breakout one for Clarkson."

I would add 1 more "IF" to that assessment:

Not only does Clarkson need to learn to pass and setup his teammates, but he also needs to do so in an efficient manner.

Now, maybe that's as simple as Clarkson learning the difference between "good" and "bad" shots. If he doesn't have a good shot available, then he should pass and setup his teammates.

But I'm not so sure that it's as simple as it seems. The situational intelligence and bball IQ required to make smart choices with the basketball may not be something that Clarkson can acquire. I'm just not sure how much more he can improve that aspect of his game.

I HIGHLY doubt that Lue is the first coach in Clarkson's career to try and teach him to be a more complete basketball player. I mean, come on. I love the idea of Clarkson furthering his development and becoming a facilitator as well as a scorer, but I just don't think he has the chops for it. If he did, we would have seen it already in the 26 year old.

That said, I hope I'm wrong and I hope we see a better Clarkson this year.

The positive concept with Clarkson is he has some talent. The man can get straight out hot and score a lot of points in a hurry. On a team which at times might struggle to have a one on one scorer, that will be a welcome sight.

I think ANY player can grow if they are willing to work on their craft. I am an over the hill non-playing fool these days BUT there was always some aspect of my game I was working on. Hopefully Clarkson see's the change of a lifetime in front of him and takes advantage of it AND is willing to learn. Passing isn't a bad thing and the great thing about passing, is that a lot of times the ball comes back to you!

We all hope he will learn. But typically

1) learning habits do not change
2) players who are willing to learn do not end up being ballhogging

His talent was something very valuable when he was young. He seems like he is stuck in these years, playing pick-up games where he is the best(most talented) player. The more likely scenario is that he won't change and his value will go down.

Having said that it is Lue's job to get the best out of him. A good coach would limit his negative habits and get the most out of his talent.
