Cleveland Browns 2017 Training Camp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Here's another reason I'm not in a rush to get Kizer starting: Browns would need a minor miracle to get a win out of the first three games. Browns open at home against the Steelers, who are a top 5 team on paper. They follow that one with road games against two teams expected to be in the wildcard hunt in the Ravens and Colts. Considering the youth on this offense around Kizer, why put him in such a rough opening three games? While it's important to develop Kizer this year, the young receivers are being developed as well. A veteran who has his imperfections seems like a worthy sacrificial lamb for this opening to the season while Kizer works on consistent mechanics and the nuances of reading an NFL defense.
But if Flacco and Luck aren't playing in weeks 2+3 is 2-1 really unrealistic?

I missed the larger point, keep Kizer out those first few weeks, if possible and throw Kessler or Oz to the wolves.

Look, we can agree the Steelers as an opener is a bad introduction to the NFL for Kizer. The Ravens have a strong defense and it's their home opener after spending week one in Cincy. Luck may or may not be back for week three, but Indianapolis is still a tough team to beat and invested heavily in the defense this offseason. If Kizer definitively wins the QB job, this is all a moot point, but my overall larger point is that "Osweiler sucks, just let Kizer learn on the job" has three soul crushing weeks to start it all out, and therefore not a good plan.

Brock is who he is at this point and should do better for now as a vet. If winning games is important early Brock gives you the best chance.

Kessler just doesnt look good. They expanded his play book, seeing if he is ready to be a true #1 qb and audition one was a huge failure.

With Kizer you cant just look at the completions or arm talent. He was lost on the reads a few times, he was only in a shot gun, he was very limited on the plays, no audibles, and is not comfortable in a huddle yet.

All of those things take time, but man is the arm talent there. I didnt like the pick personally, but now i think the pick was brilliant. I saw all the makings of a good starting QB last week.

All of that said, he really didnt run a pro offense making him very not ready to start. The rookie non first rounders who have succeeded recently played in a pro style offense in college and more importantly, actually played on good teams.

I think we need at least 8 starts this year from Kizer to see what we have, but starting week 1 will just be a blood bath. Now I am not sure that he doesnt recover eventually, but I also want to see us start winning games, for now, Brock gives us the best chance.....for now, soon Kizer will be ready.

I finally saw the preseason game and took away a few things

Brock was not nearly as bad as some are saying, the one throw should have been a td, he moved the team although 3 or 4 over throws were terrible. Not saying good, but wasnt bad.

I think having 3-4 terrible throws in a single quarter is a terrible overall performance.

He really looked good on allot though. I think when weighed out its average.

You expect 1 or 2 over throws, especially in the first pre season game even from Tom Brady.

Just saying we all think he sucks based on last year, so we see things that arent there.

If the 2 dropped balls were caught, we are singing a different tune on the performance.

80% of his passes he didn't even look downfield.

He dropped it off to the shortest route he possibly could.

I don't think it's necessary to prove that Osweiler is a fringe starter at best. The body of work the past two seasons show a player who has plateaued. The Browns getting a second rounder to eat his salary in the pro sport with the least amount of contract protection is telling. He is a low end bridge QB at best.

That said, WHY do bridge QBs exist? It's because the Browns don't want to screw up the development arc of DeShone Kizer. There will always be a large contingent of Browns fans calling for the younger guy with more potential to start right away. It's called impatience, not a development strategy.

I am not always a fan of saying a qb cant suck for a bit and it ruins him. I think its case by case. For every Brees, Brady or Farve that sat, we have a Manning, Aikman or Elway who played right away.

The thing is where they are at in their development. With Kizer, he was not asked to do but maybe 50% of what a pro QB does and yes this is on ND, but still where he is at.

Sit Kizer a bit, let him practice and get comfortable with a huddle and sit next to coaching and learn the progressions a bit better. You dont want to wait for ever, nothing is better than playing, but Kizer just has allot of development.

Whole lot of speculation on how much learning Kizer needs by people who cannot see it.

If the coaches say he needs more time, he needs it. Mentally, its hard to say. Physically, what we can see, hes more than ready.

Regardless, his time is going to be THIS year. If he is so far behind that he cannot get significant snaps this year, then he is probably not worth it.
