Cleveland Browns 2018 Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
There’s no reason to just blindly sit Mayfield and not let him compete.

So dumb and archaic.
This is literally the only game in Tyrod's career where he completed less than 50% of his passes.

A rapist future HOF QB threw 3 INTs and had 2 fumbles. Maybe it was the weather? Jumping to conclusions after a tie as an underdog is dumb.

I can't believe I'm coming across as a Hue Jackson defender now when I ragged on him as much as anyone last year. I also like Baker much more than you. Let's keep some perspective.

It really doesn't

Penalties and hurries are a measureable quantity. He was literally terrible

The Watt part of that tweet makes it lose credibility which is a shame because just highlighting the penalties and hurries shows how poor he played

Although I do only remember 3 penalties and not 4, anyone remember the 4th?

Look I'm not saying he was great. I don't know about horrible though. It was his first start in the NFL and it was against Pitt, I'm not going to rush to call him a disaster. 3 penalties is bad. IIRC, Myles had 3 penalties too. I was on one though.

Tyrod Taylor has never been anywhere near a QB that should keep a #1 pick from competing for a starting job.

At his peak, he’s a mediocre QB.

@thedarkness2332 i get you want Harrison to be good, but can you explain how he wasn't a total train wreck?

68th ranked tackle by PFF after week 1 by the way, but even more than PFF I focused in on Harrison and Bitonio a lot in that game and Harrison got beaten like a fucking drum. How many non-biased grades and statistics do we need before we can say he was shit?

Harrison did stabilize a bit in the second half, but his first half was very rough regardless of what Lance Zierlein says.

PFF is particularly harsh on offensive linemen who commit penalties even if they get declined and Harrison had 3.

He was also pretty poor run blocking the entire game.

But there’s enough there in terms of pass blocking to be optimistic about his long-term future I suppose.

I think Harrison is too weak to have a true future as a starter

Wonder if Corbett will at least be active this week.

Since we're monitoring the Desmond Harrison impact:

@The Wizard of Moz legitimately asking.. What is funny? Are only the negative reviews worth anything?

The only reason I posted anything is because we do have an issue with confirmation bias amongst the fan-base. It makes sense (to me) to hear what folks with no stake in the Browns think as opposed to jaded fans. And that's not to say I think PFF is wrong, I just think it shouldn't be the only metric.

I thought his tweet was funny because I legitimately have no idea what he was watching.

Maybe people have a much more forgiving definition of what passable offensive line play is than me, but having several terrible plays in a game is just not going to cut it. Offensive line is all about consistency. 3 bad plays as an offensive lineman, if they’re bad enough, is enough to change an entire game. Harrison did have some flash plays. His peel back block on one of Tyrod’s scrambles was a vicious hit and a high effort play that a lot of lineman would have quit on, but offensive line is something that needs consistency. If you have 70 good plays and 8 horrible plays at offensive line you had a terrible game. It’s just not a position that you can have several fuck ups a game with. And that’s what Harrison had

Harrison missed a lot of opportunities in the preseason, so now he gets the trial by fire. Week one, he came out extra crispy. I think it's disengenuous to put all of TJ Watt's stats on him, Hubbard lined up against Watt often. The Harrison penalties and sacks surrendered definitely put a struggling offense further away from the first down marker time and time again.

The offensive line has some young pieces, and I expect them to have games where they start and games they watch from the sidelines. In this case, the hope is that Harrison and Corbett get through their rookie year to make the leap in their second year. Neither Shon Coleman or Drango were able to accomplish the leap.

I mean.....

Isn't this the main issue here? I respect everyone on both sides. the ones posting the stats and the ones going by what their eyes saw but this is really a coaching issue. I even think a lot of Tyrod's struggles were on coaching. Throwing a career high in passes in horrible weather with no game flow and completely botching the gameplan by screwing up with Josh Gordon.

Why do I feel like Harrison, Tyrod, Josh Gordon, Hyde, Duke, and Chubb all had to overcome coaching before the game even started? because they did. Hue had them behind the 8 ball before the kickoff. I'm not even mad at the players because as a whole the team showed that if coached properly and with real leadership they can play well enough to win games.

I think you need to stop and take a deep breath when it comes to this team.

It's easy to get overly negative, and I think a lot are reaching that point.

For a guy who's last real football was at West Georgia after a large hiatus from the sport, I think there was a lot to like. He missed a huge chunk of camp and never had a chance to really work with the first team.

Sure, these are all arguments for why he shouldn't have been thrust out there week 1. But he was, against better judgement. I was against putting him out there so early, but it appears we are going to let him learn on the job.

I suppose how else is he going to get better? By playing. And I, too, watched a lot of Harrison during the game and it was clear to me that he has the speed, the length, the feet, and the play strength to be a great left tackle with time.

The penalties were annoying. Those, I chalk up to what I said earlier--clearly the biggest stage he's ever been on playing football, and it had been awhile. He admitted that he was nervous and jittery post-game. As far as "getting beat like a drum," I only saw this happen to him once or twice. Even still, I put a lot of this on Taylor holding onto the ball for 5 seconds and seemingly being terrible at navigating a pocket. Many times, he could step up in the pocket and deliver a throw. He instead chose to hang back and hold onto it.

This reminds me of the point in camp where Hue and company made it an effort this year to create a deeper pocket for our 6'0 QB's to see. We all noted how this was going to place bigger demands on our two tackles to get deep quickly. That, too, is an adjustment.

What I saw from Harrison in the game is a talented dude who appeared more comfortable in the run game. I also saw him improve in the 2nd half and as the game went on.

Personally, I'm excited to see the progression to the Saints this week. Give him some time. Him adjusting and growing is likely to serve as a barometer for when we're likely to see Mayfield.
