Cleveland Browns Quarterback Position

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Draft season on Twitter, basically:

My guesses for the draft--

  • Browns won't pay to trade up to grab an average talent at QB. Goes against the tenants of moneyball.
  • If the Browns draft a QB at 12, they would take a guy with high measurables, probably Mahone.
  • But if a blue chip defender is on the board, or they think they can get more value by trading down, Browns won't take a QB at 12 and will probably draft a surprise QB later in the draft.

Brian Sipe was drafted in the 13th round--

Fingers crossed we draft Maholmgrum.

Brian Sipe was also below average and had what amounts to one good season.

Just saying.

Boobie has to get his token political jab in there.

Speaking of politics, Brian Sipe left the Browns to play for...

...Anyways, I am a big supporter of waiting until there is value on the draft board for a QB. It's not ideal to go into the season with QB as a weak position, but I'd prefer going into next season with multiple problem areas settled.

I'm inclined to agree. In fact I do agree, but we live in this strange world where quarterbacks are such a required commodity in the eyes of the football cognoscenti that every year there will be teams taking quarterbacks with "second round talent" in the first round. Late first round value picks are projected as top 10. And fools say if you don't have a quarterback and you've got the first overall pick, it's silly to pass on a passer even if there's a mere defensive end considered to be the surest thing in the entire draft. In this environment, will there ever really be "value" at the QB position?

Oh, there's no one position more influential on a football game than QB. I'll go further and say the Browns are unlikely to make the playoffs without the emergence of at least a middle-of-the-road starting QB. They've had flashes of average play from Anderson and Hoyer for one season each, Couch inconsistently for a few years. The starting QB is incredibly important.

That said, this is a strong draft for a multitude of positions. If the Browns reach on a QB who isn't ready to start and may not be ready to start for two seasons, they will pass on an immediate starter at another position. Are there ANY positions where you feel like the Browns are set? Maybe offensive line interior, that's it. 1984 was probably the greatest first round of talent in NBA history, and the Cavs reached on a center: Tim McCormick. He was then traded to Seattle, but it's an important lesson in why you don't lock in on one position no matter what.

We need to skip on the QB early in the first round, they are late 1st round grades at best, now if our Target QB is still available in the 20s I am not afraid to go up and make sure we get him since we have the assets to go make the move. The additional year of control is also a good thing for the team as well so having three first round picks instead of two first and two seconds I can deal with. Though it would be funny to move to 19-20 from 12 and move up to 24 from 33 since we would end up with the same amount of picks in this draft since the trade down would merit a second round/a third and a second next season. We have the ability to move up and down very well on day one and two so let's take advantage of it.

If they are head over heels in love with Trubisky, then you go get your guy. But definitely not #1. Don't get scared into trading up from chatter either.

Only way you trade outta #1 is if someone like the Titans for some reason wanted to trade BOTH of their #1's this year, AND a #1 next year. Then we would have three picks in the 1st round, all above 18. two 1st's next year and three 2nd's.

Now I am not saying I want it, but I am saying that would have to be the offer to trade outta #1 and getting Myles, to have a possibility of just getting Trumbone and adding 2 more talented, starter caliber players.

Nothing against Trubisky, but when a front office falls in love with a guy, expect bad stuff to happen. Either the team over reaches and wastes a good pick, or they get raked over the coals when other teams sniff the desperate attempts to trade up. Teams should try to take the emotion out of the draft. Build a solid draft board, stick with it, and don't be afraid to trade down when you got a lot of guys that you still like on your board and someone shows up desperate for a trade.

If the Browns have to wait one more year to get a QB? What then? They end up with an 5-11 record because of it maybe. If that happens, they will probably get a better QB with pick 8 in the 2018 draft than they would with pick 12 this year.

Yea that's what everyone said last year too when people were making excuses for trading out of 2. I didn't want Wentz either, though.

I 100% agree with you to the point of overreaching and wasting a pick and taking emotion out of the pick. Try and stick to the board; if Trubisky is there at 12, you take him.

But if the Browns did their homework and believe Trubisky is their guy for years to come, you try and get him. It all depends on how much they value Trubisky. If there is even a hint of doubt in their minds, they better as you said, stick to the solid built draft board.

I also agree with @Pick6 though. Last year we were clamoring over QB's in this draft. Early on/during last season, we were clamoring over QB's in this draft. We get to 9 days away from the draft.....let's wait till next year when THAT class is loaded!

You are damn sure the Browns already did their HW on all the QB's next year and are comparing them (as much as they can) to the top 5 this year. But sooner or later, we have to take one. One they believe is their shining light, their tree topper, AZ's disagree button to sportscoach's posts.

We should be fortunate that we have the #1 and there is a generational player we can take with that pick. But it also sucks that there isn't a "standout" QB.

Trust. Faith. Believe in the process.

Underrating Sipe a bit. He had 4 good seasons and 1 great MVP season.

That said he is nowhere close to a HOFer, they didnt send as many to the Probowl then or he would have had 3 or 4 pro bowls, but I understand what you are saying.
