Cleveland Browns Quarterback Position

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wait, what? It came out we might take McCaron instead of drafting a QB?

No.. Nobody has ever said it was either/or. I don't think, anyways. My point has been that $25 million guaranteed to McCarron isn't steep when you have as much cap room as the Browns.. You can split the 25 guaranteed over 2 years; I'd bet that he's useful in some way for 2 years or is useful for another team who'd take him on if the deal was only partially guaranteed through the first 2 years of it.

All speculation right now. But, if your signing a QB at $20 million a year, it’s not to be a mentor.
It actually is.

AAV of the contract is meaningless.
All that’s important is the GTD money, cap figure in year one( meaningless for us) and how easy the deal is to get out of after year one.

Also, we don’t realize it because we’ve had so many rookies and complete burnouts at QB but in 2018, the cap number cost of an average/mediocre starting QB on his second contract is 15-20M per year, even if the deal is designed to be just for one year.

So whether we get McCarron or someone else, unless that someone else is over 36, he’s going to get what looks like big money. And he’ll still be a placeholder and we’ll still draft a QB at one or four.

Browns fans talking themselves into A.J. McCarron will be a real treat.

Cmon guys. If there’s anyone experienced enough in mediocre QB play to diagnose it, it’s us.

You’ve got Rosen staring you in the face, and even if you weren’t on him one of the other guys is better.

Rosen, Darnold, Mayfield/Jackson > McCarron for $25m+

If the Browns sign McCarron, the rookie better be ready to start by game eight.

They'll have a QB controversy before camp.

That said, will Darnold or Mayfield be able to start the first year?

Why, after 0-16, if a McCarron led Browns is 3-5 after 8, do you really think they’ll be all that much controversy.

Dorsey didn’t come here to go from 0-16 to 3-13. He turned a 2-14 team into a 9-7 team over night. Neither did Haley.

Yes of course anything can happen and for us it’s almaot always been bad, but between the developing talent, FAs, and 6 top 65 picks, Dorsey’s trying to build a winning team in 2018.

If we’re even close to that, there will be no controversy unless we’re playing so well everywhere else that we’re literally winning in spite of the QB.

And if we’re 1-7, 2-6 at game 8, of course there would be a QB controversy from the fans perspective, regardless of who starts the season under center.

It isn't out of the realm of possibility even with an ok record. Witness the Texans where weak QB play is apparent and people do call for changes.

You can start whoever you want, DeShone Kizer is living proof.

You’re going to suck, but you can start them.

I said awhile ago, its a good probability we sign AJ McCarron to a contract like Glennon got the last season, with first year guarantee and partial guarantee after that if any. With Dorsey at the helm though I can see him going for a solid veteran and not an unproven as well though.

I don’t think it’s an either/or situation.

Feels like they’re going to do both like the Bears with Glennon and Trubisky a year ago.

I'm all-in on mediocre or worse A.J. as a bridge quarterback. The perfect guy given that he was handpicked by Hue. And when he and the team dissappoint...Jimmy has only one person left to blame.

We were 1-15 the year before, brought in a quarterback with a lifetime 13-8 record, and the fans, media, coaches, and front office all turned up their noses as if they were just brought dinner with pubes all over it. "No thanks, let's try starting a 21 year old second round rookie", they all said, pretty much in unison.

So you think AJ McCarron is gonna come in here and everyone will be on board with the #1 OVERALL pick on the bench? No controversy there, eh? You don't even have to draft the #1 overall to have a controversy here. 1st preseason game, if McCarron goes 3-8 in his first start and DeShone Kizer does absolutely anything, you will have people claiming Kizer has come around and should be starting.

Unproven is what comes to mind whenever I think of A J McCarron, remember Mike Glennon and Brock Osweiller .

Then he isn't coming here. You guys have zero faith in Dorsey apparently. Ok, I understand why. The Browns FO hasn't exactly inspired faith the last 20 years. But the guy would have to be clinically brain dead to sign McCarron and forgo drafting a FQB at #1.
I have complete faith in Dorsey, that’s why I don’t think he is going to waste the resources on AJ.
AJ isn’t taking a 1yr/$20 2/$40 million dollar deal to mentor a kid. He’s looking for 3/4+ year deal and that is something we won’t do for an unproven backup. Now, if AJ isnwill to do 2/$28 that’s a different story and we can front load the shit out of it.

Let's step back for perspective. McCarron is 27 years old and has been making rookie scale backup QB money up until now. He wants to cash in, and he wants a starting job. No team is going to mistake him for Kirk Cousins, there will be a second QB wherever he goes. The Browns have all the money in the world with their current cap situation, and the starting job is wide open even if they go QB at #1 overall.

McCarron would be the IDEAL bridge QB at that age. Also, when he loses the job he becomes one of the best backups in the league and a trade chip.

I'm all for it.
