Cleveland Indians 2018-2019 Offseason Outlook

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't know if that's true. It's easy to say in retrospect. But I'll give you an example and we'll play a fun offseason game:

Player A: Age 25, .282/.369/.439/.807, 120 OPS+, 18 HR, 81 RBI
Player B: Age 25, .246/.354/.496/.850, 125 OPS+, 34 HR, 96 RBI

Which player would you take?
probably player a. has enough power, but hits with more average.

Its water under the bridge at this point in time, but the haul the marlins received was very underwhelming according to many. Got a centerfielder that hit.199 this year and a bunch of low end prospects, that nobody knows will amount to anything. Mckenzie, plus zimmer/allen and some low end prospects would've probably got the deal done.

At any rate that was the steal of the century for the brewers. We only got Miller for a little over 2 years,(a deal I do every time) and the brewers will get yelich's services until 2022. Insane.

Greg Allen?

Lol. Just that simple, I guess.

The Marlins got three prospects in the Top 125 of baseball “according to many.”

While I have little doubt they’ll be unable to develop them, saying that Zimmer/Allen and some “low level” guys would get it done with McKenzie is nonsense.

I feel if we are going to be trading any of our top 5 prospects it will be for someone with some years of length to their contract.

This is going to sound strange, but I think we are going to trade veterans for prospects/young players, while we trade prospects for veterans.

This is what I think could happen this offseason, of course just guessing/me being the strange person I am!

Trade EE to Boston for like Minor League Starting Pitcher Mike Shawaryn.

Trade Carrasco to Oakland for 1st baseman Olson, relief pitcher Trivino, minor leaguers RHP Kaprielian and RHP Naile/OF Bolt

Trade Alonso and Kipnis for the best offer we can get.

Decline Guyer's option but have a minor league invite for him.

Trade a package around Chang + 2 or 3 minor leaguers for Adam Eaton.

Sign Util Marwin Gonzalez, Sign Kelvin Herrera (maybe a veteran like JA Happ or someone like that)

Re-sign Brantley, LHP Oliver Perez,

Minor league deals to Forsythe, Buchholz, Tomlin, etc, To compete for bench spots, bullpen spots and 5th rotation spot.

Opening day Lineup:
RF Eaton, SS Lindor, 2B Ramirez, DH Brantley, LF Gonzalez, 1B Olson, 3B Diaz, C Gomes, CF Allen/Zimmer.

Bench: Gonzalez, C Perez, OF Allen/Zimmer, OF Martin

Starting Rotation:
Kluber, Bauer, Clevinger, Bieber, Winner of the 5th spot battle

Bullpen:
Closer - Hand, Setup- Herrera, RHP Trivino, RHP Cimber, LHP Olson, LHP Perez, Then winner of last spot! (or best 5 guys in spring training)

Something like that! I am sure you guys will just role your eyes at me, but this is something I think will make sense, especially when we have team control in 2020 over everyone as well.

I would imagine that Gallo would cost us McKenzie plus another top fifteen prospect. Would you make that deal? Personally, I don't think I would considering the alarming home/road splits for him along with his infamous strikeout rate.

Probably not. The home/road splits don't really worry me much. There is a lot to like about him though and if he can drop that K rate to 30%, which is a big jump (but very attainable) and still super high, he could become an even more valuable player. Who knows if that happens though, his K rate was super high across all the minor league levels too.

Not sure if it was mentioned in here but sounds like Mike Chernoff turned down the Mets and intends to remain with the Indians. There were reports they were pursuing him to be their Head of Baseball Ops.

That's the 6th person to turn down the job.

No thanks on Gallo. Dude has insane power, but his career high in BA is .209, and his career BA away from Arlington is .193. He's still young, and I guess there is always a chance that he could turn into a guy that isn't a threat to hit below the Mendoza line every year, but I think the Indians need to focus on guys that can actually get on base instead of throwing another all or nothing guy in the lineup.

Ramirez and Lindor could both clear 40 HRs next season while hitting .270+. No reason to give up serious talent just to add another guy that might clear 40 HRs who would probably hit around .192 for a full season when you take him away from Texas.

Would love to add Gallo, but doesn't seem realistic.

He's a very good athlete, and a solid defender at multiple positions along with being a very good baserunner.

The power is the obvious sell, but it's not the only thing he brings to the table.

He's a 3 WAR guy now with a very high ceiling. Having one all or nothing guy in the lineup seems doable considering we don't have any others.

We're talking 12 less hits on the road in 36 less plate appearances in his career...

If you want to bring up the power, sure I guess, but his road/home splits really do not worry me at all. It's not like he's CarGo in Colorado

Hard pass on Gallo for me.

Would be a mistake to not go after JOEY GALLO

It's going to be interesting to see the bullpen on Opening Day. Reading this article from Alex Hooper sheds some light on a few things.

Right now, it looks like this:

Locks
Brad Hand
Adam Cimber
Nick Goody

Internal Candidates
Dan Otero
Jon Edwards
Tyler Olson
Neil Ramirez
Cody Anderson
Danny Salazar
James Hoyt
Ben Taylor
Nick Sandlin

If I had to guess right now, I'd say this will be our pen to start:

Hand
Salazar
Cimber
Goody
Edwards
Otero
Free agent (likely on a minor league deal)
