I don't disagree. He has more passing ability than he gets credit for, but I think that is because he only chooses to pass if he gets stopped. If he was looking for the pass more often, he would be capable of racking up assists. I do think Beilein will help him greatly in this regard as simple reads are part of the system, and the pass is often the call in a read and react system.

I also don't think it is crazy for him to have worked so hard on his drive game this past year. He was turning the ball over like crazy initially, and driving into 3 guys, going so hard to the rim he lost the ball etc. His finishing got way better as did his ability to break down a double team and when to drive vs pull up from 3. I don't think concentrating on one or 2 areas is crazy. If he can get to the rim at will like he did the last part of the season that is perfect for him to start working on his passing. He's got the shoot and drive part down, I think his assist game will come largely as a drive and kick guy so the fact he has a functional drive game and his jumper helps that was just his first level to unlock.

Tell us more about the system.

John Beilein's "system" is rapidly approaching Byron Scott's mythical "Princeton Offense" in terms of fans overselling what's going to happen.

There's no magic offensive system fairy dust that's gonna make guys who aren't very good become good. This is the NBA. Talent still trumps all at the end of the day.

I would happily be willing to bet anyone who wants to donate to RCF that the Cavs finish in the bottom 10 in ORTG next year.

That's not true! The Bulls and Lakers were successful because of the Triangle. The talent on those teams had nothing to do with it. The players were all system players and wouldn't have been any good without Phil Jackson. :chuckle:

I'll take that bet for $20. Mark it down. Cavs were 25th this year with Drew, no Love for most of the year, etc. I could see us being a league average offense next year especially if we draft well and Sexton takes a nice leap.

We'll probably be one of the worst defensive teams still and I do not expect us to win a lot of games but I think that ORTG is very doable.

This team also has a ton more talent than Byron Scott ever did, even with rookie Kyrie(who was a great individual offensive rookie but that's about it), plus Beilein is a totally different level of coach than Scott ever was, IMO.

I think the point was that a structured offense might be better than Drew "calling no plays" which has been reported. "Maybe having no offensive system and having a very good one are exactly the same." lol

To me, Collin's defensive comp is poor mans D'Aaron Fox.

Athletically and length wise, they are very similar (Sexton is slightly longer)....and Collin has a thicker frame.

Fox had a little better steal rate in college but not overwhelmingly better.

Fox was a dumpster fire in his rookie year:

DRPM: -2.71
POS. RANK: 76/79

Second year:

DRPM: 0.47
POS. RANK: 18/102

I don't think it is realistic to see Collin be that good but it does show the improvement that can happen with rangy / athletic types.

In all honesty, if Collin can just be a top 40-50 ish DRPM guy at PG, his scoring skill can make him a positive player in his mid 20's.

But currently, he's such a negative on defense, that it more than washes out any offensive value.

And it's additionally nearly impossible to be a positive wins player if you are a bottom 50% player at either OFF / DEF.

FWIW, I think it's significantly easier for a bad team to make dramatic gains on the defensive end of the floor more than the offensive end of the floor under a new coach because so much of defense is tied to effort and attitude.

Offensive gains are so tied to talent above all else and the Cavs just don't have a lot of it.

Maybe in this era of iso ball
Not when phil jackson had his triangle offennse
A “scheme” will not beat a dream team but it will be better than nothing which we had last year

you cant just roll a few talented players out there and expect them to "make it work". You still have to make the pieces fit. Who does what, when and how... how are we going to maximize these talents, how do we make these pieces of talent fit together like a puzzle, seamlessly as possible.

just going out playing YMCA pick up game offense is not going to win a championship. maybe a few games and some exciting plays, but not going to win anything of substance.

Im glad ISO is going more and more out of style, thanks to the spurs, and now a great deal of credit to the GSW. Everybody wants to play like the 2016 GSW, (minus blowing a blow 3-1 lead).. with the exception of HOU. But that may be changing.

Ooh if we are making bets I want to bet on Sexton's defense improving.

I don't know the fancy metrics but I'll wager 10 bucks he's at least top 50% for PGs

I’m not sure there is a young player that works harder than Collin Sexton and you have to love that about him! The great ones use perceived slights as fuel & motivation. Baker Mayfield does the same thing with the Browns. Sexton is just the kind of guy you want setting the tone for other young players and helping to lead a rebuild.
