Google that, subbing and offsides and it makes the game a heck of a lot more interesting. It's less chaos if you understand those.

I still don't know what icing is.

Icing is when one player shoots the puck to the other end of the ice.

Now, there are a few things with this. If the attacker is past the center line, it's legal. If he's behind the center line, icing.

Additionally, the offensive player has the ability to beat the defenseman to the puck, they can cancel the icing. If the refs believe that the defender can get the puck first, they will blow it dead. The result of an icing is a face off in the defender's zone. The NHL, a few years ago, instituted the no touch icing rule. That's why they will blow it dead before anyone touches the puck.

During a Powerplay, icing doesn't exist for the defensive team. However, if a team simply pulls a goalie, and has a 6 on 5, icing still applies.

And for an added bonus, offsides is when a player goes over the attacking blue line before the puck. The play is blown dead and immediately goes to a neutral zone faceoff.

Subbing in hockey works on the fly. When they talk about "line changes", that's players rushing to the bench, and three other forwards come on. Teams run 3 forwards, 2 defenseman, and one goalie usually. Obviously, that changes during a penalty kill, when it's 2 defenseman and 2 forwards. You can have a 5 on 3, usually it's 2 defenseman and 1 forward.

Forwards are attackers, their positions are Left Wing, Center, Right Wing. Guys are very specific as to what they play and usually do not switch sides. Then obviously 2 defenseman, and they are usually interchangeable.

That was another awesome game last night. Been a ton of fun to watch this team.

So if a team did this, and the defensive team was able to clear out the puck in what would normally result in an icing call, but the puck is headed towards the open goal, would the refs call icing, or let the goal stand?

Also, could you explain penalties? I think I sort of understood it from watching last night as if a team commits a penalty, and the other team gets the puck, they let everything play out until the team who committed the penalty regains control, in which case they blow it dead and apply the penalty?

Ah, so, important point, the puck HAS to cross that red line that goes from goal post to the boards. If it's going towards an open goal, it's a goal.

It's a huge risk reward when the goalie is pulled, for sure.

Yes, in order for a penalty to be called, the team that has committed the penalty must be in possession of the puck, not touches the puck. Big difference, it means you can shoot the puck at the goalie and still get rebounds, which happened last night, obviously.

There are also two types of penalties, minor and major. If a guy is dumb enough, you can get a double minor, which is a 4 minute power play. Minor penalties are things like slashing, hooking, roughing, cross checking, interference. Majors are things like a game misconduct, fighting, and maybe some others. It's...kind of hard to really explain all of them, but most of them are pretty obvious. The only one I get a little confused on myself, and I've been a fan for about 13 years now, is cross checking. I believe it's when a player checks another player from the side/behind with his stick.

Important note: Major penalties are 5 minutes each. Fighting penalties go to both participants. Game Misconducts are plays where a guy commits a penalty where it goes above and beyond the scope of a minor penalty. Game misconducts result in expulsion from the game and potentially a suspension. If you want an example of this, go look at Nasim Kadri's hit in the Toronto-Boston series or the Nikita Kucherov hit in the Tampa-Columbus series.

Been pretty quiet here after last year because of my superstitious nature and didn't want to jinx anything but fucking eh, what a series.

Now we get to scout and that TOR - BOS series looks like it could go to seven. Oh yeah, and PIT got swept last night too.

I like this new feeling.

What's the chances that Bob and Panarin still leave?

What's the chances that Bob and Panarin still leave?

Great question. I think Bob would stay if we unload the brinks truck, which if he continues to play like this the rest of the playoffs, I have no qualms with. He shook off the playoff bust moniker last year IMO, despite losing in the first round.

I still worry Panarin wants to go to a big market team regardless of success, which is unfortunate but I get it - grew up in middle of nowhere Russia and worked his ass off and will taste FA for the first time in his NHL career. Again, if he wants to stay, unload the brinks truck and make him one of the highest paid guys in hockey but make sure you get him tied to a longer deal.

I think the problem is that we don't have the cap flexibility to pay Panarin, Bob, and Duchene (and his recent comments suggests he wants to stay, which I don't think was expected considering his past).

If all three are willing to stay but you can only afford two, Panarin is priority #1 IMO. When he's at his best, he is a true game-changer and there are only a handful of guys in the league like that.

I'm the opposite. I think Duchene should be top priority. Having two top line center's has changed this team for the better.

I also think that with some of the guys they have coming up, including Tex, Bemstrom, and others, I'm more than willing to let Bread go. He's a great player, sure, but I think we have options to replace him on the top line. Not the least of which would be Dzingel re-signing and Tex just taking a top 6 spot.

I think Bob is just looking for a big contract and the Jackets were hesitant to give it to him. If he keeps this up, there is no way you let a 2x Vezina winner go if he's shaken the playoff choker moniker.

What's the rules in being a Jackets fan?

Kinda warming up to them more. I enjoy the NHL, have never had a team and the lone time I saw them? I had a good time. Plus geographic ties and all.

I'm not frontrunning/fairweathering I hope?
