Greg Oden will never be a bust in my eyes

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
When injuries derail your career and you're a guy who played well when healthy, you're not a bust. You're just a guy who had shitty luck.

That's fair, but he was still effectively a bust for Portland. They knew his injury history and decided to accept the risk of drafting him, and as it turns out, made the wrong choice.

Heck, if you really want to be fair, it's not Bennett's fault that the Cavaliers took him #1.

Those picks were both busts, for the GM/Team.

Would you rather be the guy that took Bennett or Oden?

Easily Bennett. The Blazers missed out on Coward Durant.

We could have drafted Giannis but that's a lot of hindsight IMO. He went 15th after all...

Bennett was a horrendous pick, but at least he wasn't picked before a future MVP and all around pussy

The guy who missed on Oden ... looks like he still has a job in the league as a GM, and probably didn't get his former boss fired for a Luol Deng remark.

I meant in a vaccuum.

Yeah the world may call him a bust but imo a bust is a guy who gets the chance to play and plays and just sucks. Oden is an INJURY bust. But when he did see the court he could play very good in the post. Hard to play D when you can barely switch direction because of your knees, but healthy Oden is the type of player who probably delays this small ball trend a couple more years. He was THAT good. Bynum as well.

I miss my 90s throwback centers. Hope that playstyle comes back into the NBA someday. When those bigs come back I bet they'll be revolutionary like these new PGs. Their probably gonna have post moves, and shoot the 3, and be fast enough to switch pick and rolls.

Imagine if the league just took in 6-8 Anthony Davis clones. OMG

A lot of people say this 3pt trend is great for the NBA and fun to watch.....How is it fun to watch when only 2 teams have the collection of 3 point shooters needed to actually consistently win doing it? Yeah Cavs are in that 2 but I'm not gonna act like I haven't been annoyed by our offense at times

This... doesn't make sense. 90's throwback centers didn't shoot threes, and they really weren't fast enough to switch onto guards on the perimeter. You literally aren't describing 90's throwback centers.

Also, unless they change the rules, the 90's center is dead. There will be, and are, guys that can play on the block, but gone are the days of walking up the floor, throwing it to a big on the block, and letting him go to work.

Hmm 90's throwback centers that people model are Hakeem, Robinson, with an old Ewing and a young Shaq somewhere slightly lower. While these guys didn't shoot 3's Hakeem and Robinson could definitely switch onto wings and were amazing defenders because of their ability to protect the paint and yet run the floor like a guard.

I have no doubt that prime Hakeem and Robinson would be top 5 players and their teams would be title contenders. We have precedence with Orlando Howard and he wasn't nearly as good on offense as those two.

There wasn't much Oden could do unfortunately. His body betrayed him. He was arguably the most dominant player in college hoops that year. (notice that i said dominant, not necessarily the best) When he was able to string games together in Portland, it's not like his skill set didn't transfer over to the NBA well. It was obvious that he would've been a starter in this league for years and that was what Portland was looking for...a complement to a budding Brandon Roy.

Come to think of it, it's amazing what Portland has been able to accomplish since then. Two potential franchise guys that just couldn't stay healthy and they still find a way to get in the playoffs more often than not.

In the context of that draft, he was a bust, just because they passed on Durant to take him.

But if you're going to use that same context, Darko Milicic might be the biggest bust of all time.

Greg Oden just had terrible luck with injuries, but he was a very skilled player and a potential franchise center.

To me, he isn't a bust, at least not in the traditional sense. Kwame Brown, Darko Milicic, Michael Olowokandi, Anthony Bennett... those are busts. Some might argue that Bennett was an overdraft in a historically weak draft class, but even then he hasn't even come close to living up to the billing of being a lottery-caliber (or even NBA-caliber) player.

Post play is simply not a very efficient way to play offense. For 90s throwback centers to make a comeback you would need to do some really creative work with the rules. For example, making any shot inside the restricted area circle worth 3 points.
