Iman Shumpert: Gone! Thank God!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
IBWT we trust is gonna go down with the ship. Maybe by like year 10 he'll actually be what people say he is. He is currently not an elite wing defender.

I just really really don't think it's that hard to find highly inconsistent wing defense, middling 3 point shooting, and an inability to handle the ball
In fact we found it in the D League or wherever the heck Liggins was last. Which Liggins is actually a much better defender and perhaps a bit better of a ball handler. He isn't a great finisher, but neither is Shump. 3 point shooting is honestly a wash. Liggins takes like 2 or 3 threes a game and makes 1 or 2, basically same as Shump. Shump is more respected from opposing defenses and we will see how much better he looks with the starters tonight, but point is, we found someone just as good on a min contract out of the D League. And I'd be concerned about not knowing if Liggins will be consistent in the future, but Shump has actually proven he isn't consistent time and time again so what does that matter.

Major obstacle is the fact he is good friends with Kyrie and JR. Not that it should matter, but I don't know how much it will affect chemistry or how disgruntled they would be. But like you said, we won a ring, so the urgency to trade him isn't there. So we will see what happens this deadline.

It sounds like they are saying the lineup change is being made to help Shump play better. I don't really buy it, they can figure out other times to have him play with lots of the starters. Shump has just sucked recently, simple as that.

Ty Lue continues to push the right buttons. Inserts him into the starting lineup and immediately goes 3-3 from 3, each one a pass by LeBron or Kyrie.

Shump = permanent starter until JR returns?

Shump doesn't require a ton of shots and he can step it up. He is a playoff performer. I dunno. If he can play this well with the starters what else do you need?

Is he a playoff performer? Sure, he shot 38% from three-point land, a very respectable number. But his defense was atrocious.

Opponents shot 5.8% better overall with him as the primary defender in the 2015-16 playoffs, 15.9% better under the rim off of drives, and 13.9% better in the painted area.

Moreover, he was a trainwreck in the finals. He shot 26.7% from three-point land, had a -13.4 net rating, and a 43.2% true shooting percentage.

The myth of Iman Shumpert is much bigger than his actual play, in my opinion. If we can't get a playoff contributor for him right now, then no, of course you don't trade him. But he isn't this guy who plays lockdown defense and shows up in the postseason like fans are making him out to be.

He was great in 2014-2015 finals though.

Definitely. He was great that entire postseason. But that, and the first month of this season, have been his only two consistent stretches of his Cavs career.

Interesting bits on Shump after last night's game:
12. Shumpert clearly seemed to benefit from playing with the starters. Seven of his nine shots Friday came when no one was within 4 feet of him. That isn’t new. Shumpert watched film from last season’s Finals run with a critical eye and admitted to himself no one was guarding him anymore in the Cavs’ offense.

13. If he was going to be feared by opponents, Shumpert knew he’d have to retrain his approach to the game. For years he got to his spots by dribbling. He said last summer was the first he spent thinking “shot first.”

14. “I had one of those moments after the Finals where it was like, man, people are leaving me wide open,” Shumpert said. “Sooner or later a coach is going to say, ‘All right, he just don’t want to shoot corner 3s. We’ve got to stop putting him in there.’ I never want to be in a position where my teammates feel like, ‘I can’t throw him this pass over here because that’s just not where he’s comfortable.’ It became working on the mechanics and making sure I could shoot the same shot every time.”

15. Despite his recent slump, Shumpert is still averaging a career-high in shooting percentage. He gives the Cavs a defender in the backcourt and someone who can guard opposing point guards, as Liggins did, while providing more offensive punch than Liggins can.

Looks like he has been trying to play two different roles at once and it was affecting his energy/mentality on defense. Let's see how he does defensively with a well-defined role vs. Golden State as a starter now. Liggins' defense on Curry during the Christmas game was significant to winning.

This is not a Shumpert Trade thread and not a Rudy Gay thread. I moved all of the trade posts to the Shumpert Trade thread.

I'm going to close this thread for a bit, so posters can get used to the others...

I liked how Shumpert contributed more last night with a more focused role.
