Is the NBA too top-heavy right now?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Peyton Manning might not have been the best example. At his peak he could score at will.

But in my opinion the league is top heavy because the league the players and the media want it to be. They are playing it up to the big populations, similar to baseball, and small market teams are meant to be farm teams functionally. I think its a mistake, but I could be a tad biased.

Are they?

New York - 2 garbage teams

LA - 1 irrelevant team, 1 team relevant again after being bad for a while

Chicago - garbage team

Philly - garbage for a while, relevant again because of draft picks

Dallas - garbage team

Washington - does anyone even care about the Wizards?

Houston - traded for Harden to stay relevant, CP3 helped them jump up last year

Golden State - sure

Atlanta - garbage

Boston - well built

Phoenix - garbage

Detroit - middling

Minny - turmoil

Miami - average since LeBron left

Denver - finally looking good, but never been great

Those are the top-15 media markets in the NBA. There are 17 franchises in those markets. Didn't include Toronto because, despite being a large market, they often get step child treatment being a Canadien market.

My point about Manning/NFL talents is that they only play offense or defense and not both.

Great NBA players can impact both sides of the floor every single game, which they often do. This is something that great QBs cannot do since they don't play defense and something that great pitchers cannot do, either by not being able to hit and by not pitching every day.

A great NBA talent can have a much broader impact on his teams wins and losses... and certainly championship hopes.
