Joe "Captain America" Harris

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wouldn't Joe Harris want to be traded, though? I mean I know we are a title contender but wouldn't Harris want to get on the court and develop his game and eventually parlay that into a bigger contract? The Cavs are a dead end for him.

We got Shump with a bum shoulder last season. I was thinking $1 would have to go out with him prior to the injury, so I'd make it $2 million and some protected 2nd rounder(s) and be done with it.

No but seriously, I have no fucking clue what you're talking about? :chuckle:

If we're talking about Morris, well, Gilbert should expect to use the TPE (remember LBJ's issue with Mickey Arison), so Morris' salary isn't an issue -- think about it, it makes no sense to debate Morris' salary once you've determined to trade the exception for talent. All his other issues are fair game, but not his salary.

And Crawford? Crawford who? As in, Jamal Crawford? ..?? :chuckle: Wha?

Lol Sorry, I'm losing it.

I meant Cunningham, who's $1M in salary equals $3M in tax, and is already in potential jeopardy of being cut by Friday because of that cost.

My point was that if the cost for keeping Cunnigham is too high for Gilbert (which remains to be seen) then adding $8M in salary plus whatever that would be in tax is out of the question.

This Harris injury does also throw a wrench in our plans to free up a roster spot to even be able to make a move for somebody like Morris for just the TPE. We could cut Cunningham and his nonguaranteed deal, but we lose a decent piece. Clearly they were hoping to trade Harris, but that's probably out of the question now so are they willing to just eat his salary this year (his last year is nonguaranteed)?

There's nothing about him that makes me think he's the type of guy that wants be great at basketball.

This is the guy that came into Summer League out of shape ......two weeks after the Finals finished.

He's just collecting the check and giving Griff reach-a-rounds.

I hope we can still cut him. If not, that's what we get for not cutting him two years ago.

Indeed. I highly doubt he just found out he had a bone spur in his foot overnight and then opted for season-ending surgery.

@col63onel what does this mean for our trade prospects and opening a roster space? Are we stuck with him? Can we cut him and make space? Was his contract guaranteed? Is it still? Are we forced to dump Cunningham?

I mean, did Harris pull the ultimate move to get a championship ring?
He's guaranteed for this season, non guaranteed for next season. If we wanted to open up his spot we can still waive him and eat the money, just like before.

Cap wise, changes nothing about a trade. His salary still counts the same as it did for matching purposes. Obviously, he's probably less desirable in a trade being injured.

So, this doesn't affect us cap wise.

I doubt Philly cares to trade for him. If they really wanted him they can wait to sign him in the summer when he's waived before his June 30th guarantee date for next season. And the Cavs would probably waive him before giving up a 2nd rounder to trade him IMO

I see.. I think the only way the Cavs cut Cunningham would be if they envision picking up another vet who might get bought out as a realistic possibility. I don't think they cut him just to save on the tax.

I don't think Markieff Morris and Jared Cunningham are comparable, talent wise or in any other respect.

Morris is a legitimate big man in the NBA. Cunningham is a journeyman at best, scrub at worst.

The Cavs might think Cunningham will never see the floor with our logjam in the backcourt, and thus feel they can safely cut him while opening up a potential roster spot.

Morris on the other hand, in a best case scenario, would immediately become our best big off the bench. That's crazy when you think about it. Many posters here have voiced that they feel Morris is better than our starting center. I'm not one of them, but that opinion does exist.

Sure, he could implode, and that has to be considered, but the potential rewards given the cost, has to be considered as well.

So I wouldn't be too quick to compare Morris and Cunningham given the gulf in talent between them.

Lastly, Gilbert has been reported, numerous times, as assuring LeBron that he would never go cheap and would add talent regardless of cost, which was the opposite of what Mickey Arison did with Mike Miller (cutting him to save on the tax).

I think the Cavs will try to use the TPE, and if Morris is available, I think at a minimum phone calls will be made.

This Harris injury does also throw a wrench in our plans to free up a roster spot to even be able to make a move for somebody like Morris for just the TPE.

@col63onel says we can waive him regardless, and that his salary was guaranteed anyway, so this doesn't matter. It makes him more difficult to trade, but not impossible.

Trading Harris alongside cash considerations essentially nullifies his salary for the team taking him.

We could cut Cunningham and his nonguaranteed deal, but we lose a decent piece. Clearly they were hoping to trade Harris, but that's probably out of the question now so are they willing to just eat his salary this year (his last year is nonguaranteed)?

If you're asking me, I'd waive Harris and pick up Morris. At that point I'd consider waiving Cunningham as well. I can only see him playing if two guards are injured simultaneously.

Actually my son is a mad sixers fan...I know, bad parenting...i am actually concerned that the sixers will make a play for Delly in the off season

Well, then you know that Hinkie is the Smaug of draft picks.
