Joe John$on is a Loser

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think he would have made just as much or more money with the Cavs. Less minutes, but contributing to a playoff run looks a lot better than more minutes and doing nothing spectacular in the playoffs. I won't call him a loser, but I definitely think he made the wrong choice.
Disagree.

He's not making his decision today. He made his decision in February.

I guarantee his agent's phone call to the Cavs went like this: "my client wants to get paid like a starter on his next contract. Can you gaurantee him starters minutes or a place him in your starting 5 rotation?"

When Griffin said no, they went elsewhere. It was the smart decision AT THAT TIME. And, he did contribute to a playoff run. He'll get paid just the same, and now he gets to go on an earlier vacation.

I think Joe Johnson is done. he looked old as shit out there last night

Johnson is not a loser.

The problem is that fans don't have a balanced enough view of players as employees in a business.

I have absolutely no problem with Joe Johnson preferring a starting role with Miami in order to prove that he is worthy of one last contract. This is the last big paycheck he will earn the rest of his life.

It makes total sense to me. I would have done the exact same thing were I in his shoes.
That's you. After making 123 millions in my careers, I would want a championship before I can't play anymore. Many players also take less to win a trophy.

You say that easily as an armchair fan on the sidelines, but if you had to choose between a ring and an extra $20 million for your own family it might not be so easy.

What if you over spent during your first big contract like most athletes do? What if your agent made you sit down with your accountant and explained that if you don't make at least $30 million on your next contract, then you'll have to sell your wife's favorite vacation home?

What if you didn't invest well and the $20 million you set aside during your first contact got killed in the market recession?

It's not like that $123 million is just cash sitting in the bank somewhere. Most of it was probably spent already.

David West. It has been done both ways. Nothing new.

Yes. For every one player that makes the sacrifice, I'll find you two that chose the money. I'm not saying he SHOULD have chose the Heat. I'm saying that I understand WHY he chose the Heat.

There's a difference between your own personal preference and trying to understand human nature. Never bet against greed.

There is a problem with your logic. For this year, Joe Johnson wasn't losing any money no matter where he went. New Jersey is footing the bill. If he still was concerned with money, this was the year to go try to get the ring. Next year would be the one where he would have to decide between best chances of a ring and the most money.

Of course, this subsumes that Johnson doesn't have an under the table deal with the Heat. Something that isn't legal, and wouldn't in any way surprise me. Regardless, no one has his Bird rights for next year. So, we'll have to see where he ends up in the end and how much he signs for.

Not true. This was discussed at length in the JJ thread.

And the counter argument to the agent easily could have been "but he will get meaningful minutes in the playoffs and if he contributes to the wins it will mean more $$$ than actual starters minutes."

Not to mention Lebron said he was willing to move positions to get JJ on the team. He would have had plenty of minutes with the Cavs if he didn't suck. I don't blame a guy for trying to get paid, but he made the wrong decision. Sucks for him, but he can go fuck himself as well.

Meh. I don't have a dog in this fight anymore. If you guys want to hate JJ then go for it

Joe was actually phenomenal for the Heat from the moment they got him...until this series against Toronto. He was garbage against them.
I remember Windy said JJ was washed up or so, then he lit it up in the early games with the Heat, which pissed me off even more (was he laying down in Brooklyn, like Deng did while here, to get a buy out, I wondered). So I'm extra glad he sucked and the Heat lost. Not that I need any more reasons for liking the Heat out of the playoffs.
