Jose Calderon signs with Pistons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't think we would cut Calderon.

We will most likely trade Shump for something and end up with this 15-man roster.

1. LeBron.
2. Love.
3. Crowder.
4. IT.
5. Rose.
6. Wade.
7. JR.
8. TT.
9. Korver.
10. Green.
11. Zizic.
12. Osman.
13. Frye.
14. RJ.
15. Calderon.

The problem with getting rid of Shump is that we need someone to defend point guards and Shump is the only one that can really do it on the roster. If we trade Shump it has to be for a defensive minded PG or combo guard, thus making Calderon even more useless. It still boggles my mind why they signed him so early and to a guaranteed contract.

I think everyone agrees that these 3 players will be gone from the training camp roster --------------> Tavares, Perkins, Holland

Then you're down to 2 more players who have to go.

Here's more on Calderon/Jefferson/Felder from Vardon. He was asked why Calderon's name is not being brought up as someone who might get cut.

Yes, Jose Calderon is 36 and coming off the worst year of his pro career. He would cost less to cut than Richard Jefferson, who is widely considered vulnerable on the Cavs' roster, because he only costs $1.47 million against the salary cap. Jefferson counts $2.5 million against the cap, so, when factoring in luxury tax penalties it would cost millions more to waive Jefferson. However, coach Tyronn Lue and the front office really likes Calderon. Also, they signed him so they wouldn't get into a situation where they're having to rely on Kay Felder, even as a backup. Cleveland does indeed have Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade healthy and on the roster, with Isaiah Thomas on the way. But all three have a history of injuries. The Cavs could waive Calderon, yes, but for now, it appears they have more reliable players on the wings (where Jefferson plays) in terms of health than they do at point guard. It's worth noting that the Cavs are far more likely to trade a player (in this scenario, it would probably still be Jefferson instead of Calderon) rather than cut one.

So:

1. Felder is gone (which we already pretty much knew).

2. Injury concerns (Thomas/Rose/Wade) to Cavs PG's probably help Calderon stick.

3. Lack of injury concerns to Cavs' wings probably help push Jefferson out.

Also, I think what happened last year figures in here. Remember LeBron being upset about a lack of play makers last year? I don't think the team wants any chance that happens again (because of injuries). Which is to say, we want to avoid any possibility that Shumpert plays point guard again.

Unless someone gets hurt in addition to Thomas, it seems unlikely that Calderon will be playing much at all. He should likely be third string. With depth charts possibly looking like this:

LEBRON AND THOMAS OUT (current) =========> not taking into account Shump's injury
DR............JC.............................it
DW............IS............................co#
JR.............KK............................lj
JC.............JG............................cf
KL.............TT.............................az#

THOMAS OUT
DR.............DW............................it

JC.............JG.............................cf
KL.............TT..............................az#

THOMAS IN
IT...............DR............................jc

Right now, then, Calderon is basically playing over two rookies and Frye in the preseason (as well as over Jefferson and Felder, etc). And if Frye were a point guard, then Calderon may not be playing over him right now, either.

I mentioned the "play makers" thing in the post above. Here's more on the Cavs' apparent approach on that front from Fedor. Calderon is a play maker whereas Jefferson is not one.

http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2017/10/cavaliers_may_no_longer_have_t.html

Over the last few years the Cleveland Cavaliers expressed plenty of frustration with their lack of playmakers, an issue that became more obvious in the NBA Finals when playing against a team with a glut of them.

(snip)

It's clear the Cavs had a specific focus this off-season. The loss of Irving stings, sending away the team's second-leading scorer who has an unquantifiable impact on an opposing defense. But it also led to a needed roster makeover.

After numerous moves, the Cavs enter this new season deeper and they may finally have enough playmakers.

(snip)

Derrick Rose. Dwyane Wade. Jose Calderon. Love. They all had at least two assists.

James will be back soon. Then in a few months comes Isaiah Thomas. That will bring the playmaker number to at least six -- if Calderon makes the final cut. And Lue said recently Shumpert will get more chances to run the pick-and-roll after working hard this off-season. Even J.R. Smith was initiating offense and driving to the basket.

The "six" play makers Fedor is talking about -------> Thomas, Rose, Calderon, Wade, LeBron, Love.

So, if the team wants to focus on having a surplus of play makers, then keeping Calderon and letting Jefferson go makes sense. In addition to the reasoning from Vardon mentioned in the last post (injuries could be more a problem to Cavs' point guards than to Cavs' wings).

I don't think anyone is looking forward to Calderon getting a large number of minutes this season.

I do, however, understand why the Cavs might want to keep him over Jefferson.

Shump's defense has been quite poor ever since the playoffs in 2015 tbh.

I get the idea but frankly Shump is way too braindead.

I definitely want an upgrade over Shump for the role of a PG defender. I think Shump was at his best when he was defending wings and he wasn't asked to handle the ball at all, but I think we have better options at the wings now.

If the front office is thinking about waiving Calderon, Dante Exum's injury is something to keep an eye on. Utah could possibly want a PG and if we waive Calderon at the right time, they might make a waiver claim for him.

Good way to get some European love

Gilbert knows what he’s doing

Needs them Spanish fans on the payroll

It's an easy decision. One guy, RJ, could play spot minutes in a potential finals. The other guy, Calderon, can't. Done. Let's just cut this guy and move on.

If RJ plays any meaningful minutes in the finals then we lose the finals because we were too injured.

If we keep RJ we have 10 players capable of playing the wing.

Only Cedi is behind RJ on depth.

Right now we have 3 healthy people capable of playing pg, maybe 4 if you count LBJ and 2 of the 4 are out of position in LBJ and Wade.

Calderon is needed atleast until IT gets healthy and thus RJ is out and I love RJ.

That makes sense, and the logic is sound. I just simply reject it.

I don't care about November and December. Jose can make things marginally easier in those months. Once IT comes back, what good is he?

I'd rather have the guy that has the potential to help when it matters, and for me, that player is RJ.

Leaning this way myself. His defense looks way better. He can break his man down as well.

I think for the first time Lue put a lineup in that plays to Felders strengths. Quick trigger shooter in Korver and guys like Osman and Green who will run the floor. Osman is a willing passer and there were no ball stoppers on the floor. Felder was mostly in pass first mode and he knew if he gave the ball up it would come back around if a good shot didn't open up. He had 11 assist and Osman had 6. I would love to see him paired with Wade with Korver, Green, and TT to see if that could be a workable lineup over whoever they think Calderon will be used with.

Calderon and RJ both look like they are done. I just don't see what Calderon is going to bring, his defense is a liability. I see him having to be paired with another ball handler like Rose, Wade, or LBJ but I think he will be a net negative vs the other shooter options that could be out there. I feel with the right lineup Felder would run the offense without another ball handler. Like a lineup of Jr, Korver, Green, TT or pair him to set up Wade.

Hate to say it but I think Felder shows more promise than Calderon.

Preseason. Not saying Calderon is a sure keeper, but Felder won't be a notable contributor during the regular season either. These half-ass defenses of preseason rosters allow him to stand out a bit. I'd rather have a veteran as a 3rd string PG. The amount of ridicule for Calderon I've seen on RCF in the past months is so stupid. We all should be glad that we don't see Deron Friggin Williams on the court anymore. Will Calderon be a big contributor? No. But he's a veteran, won't make many mistakes, can shoot a bit and is a good playmaker. That's all you can ask for from a vet minimum 3rd string PG. And Felder will be just as bad on defense.

Wade/Crowder hurt his game tonight. Tonight was supposed to be his night.
