JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Griff was on the Really Big Show today and essentially said there really is no schedule for return for JR right now.

Think there is a real possibility he's not in prime form for the playoffs.

And if thats true this season maybe lost: shit can he get back into midseason form with just playoff games?

Good news is the playoffs are like another season...

If he can at least be ready to play at the start, he'll have like a month and a half before The Finals to get it together.

Would he at least be able to participate in the halftime weiner dog races if he can't play in the games?

JR will be back in the window the team already has reported. But it's not even the halfway point of that window yet, so "return timetables" are unnecessary.

Even if JR struggles a little bit in the early rounds, I think the regular season time(2-4 weeks of play) in ADDITION to the first two rounds, is PLENTY for JR to find his form. It's certainly enoguh time for him to get most of his wind back.

I think people forget really how naturally gifted JR is as a shooter and basketball player. He'll have also had plenty of time to rest all the little nicks and bruises(and that knee of his!) that were plaguing him early on this year, as well as some much needed time with his family at a time where they needed him more than we did anyways. I think JR will be in a good place mentally and physically when he comes back and it will just be a matter of him getting that wind and seeing the ball go through the hoop a few times before he's laying pipe all over Boston, Toronto, and the Bay Area.

How do you know? Serious question, are you a member of the Cavs organization or medical staff?

Okay I guess I don't know for a fact, but to this point we all know that there have been no setbacks, unless you have something showing that there has been a reported setback or even a rumored one.... so is there any reason to believe that he wont be back in 12-14 weeks?

Well, I feel like Griffin would have vouched for that when asked on The Big Show. His opaque, evasive answer wasn't very comforting.

If the organization is really that confident that JR's time table is that which was initially reported, you'd think that Griffin would have co-signed it, no?

I was under the impression that was standard procedure for most broken ones/injuries that require surgery. Basically, first step: have the surgery, get put in cast, then wait for it to heal to where activities can be resumed.

I was also under the impression that J.R. had a doctor's appointment yesterday. So I guess we'll probably know more about how things are healing when/if we find out about that visit.

It's only been what, 4 weeks since he had the surgery? So we're still looking at 2-2.5 more months(from the original timetable). I wouldn't expect any GM to "co-sign" a timetable when the cast isn't even off. It'd be irresponsible.

fwiw, I felt Griffin wasn't only accounting for physical injury and rehab time. You can put a time-table on that. JR's going through serious medical problems with his new daughter and wife, so he has some mental/emotional baggage to rehab too. You can't put a time-table on that.

I've been saying this for a while (and gotten a lot of disagrees for it). JR is not the most disciplined guy in the world, for him to be out for months and then just return to form like flicking a switch...he would have to work out like a demon for that and to be incredibly disciplined and focused in his recovery. Plus he's been having these tough personal issues.

He is a critical player for us so really hoping he will be able to get it together for/during the playoffs, but the odds aren't great.

Theory: JR Smith will play some of the best basketball we've some from him after his recovery. It may take a month to get back into game shape, but after that he will galvanize our team on both sides of the ball.

Rationale: JR likes to play, party, have fun and do all sorts of things. This injury will make him miss basketball, allow him time to goof off, spend time with his family, and recharge his batteries. And he basically returns when it's "go time" for the Cavs to start honing their lineups for the postseason. The Pipe is going to lay it down on bitches when he returns. It will be (wait for it) legendary.

Edit: I wrote this without knowing about his family issues. Best wishes, pipe

Has there been an update on his kid? To be honest, this is the most important thing right now. On the one hand, it's kind of a blessing in disguise he got this injury now, so that he can spend time with his family.

Hopefully she makes it through and lives a long and healthy life.
