The New York Police Department is currently investigating Cleveland Cavaliers star JR Smith for stealing and damaging a fan's cellphone, according to TMZ Sports.

The reported incident occurred early Sunday morning in Manhattan when a fan reportedly tried to take a picture of Smith against his wishes. The NBA star allegedly grabbed the phone and threw it in a nearby construction zone.

The victim filed a report with the police and claimed that his $800 phone was damaged.

While the police have not charged Smith with a crime, he is currently wanted for questioning about the incident.

It's turning into Reddit around here

I read on Another site that his contract falls under the old CBA so his full contract could be use in a trade then waive for the guarantee portion next summer, I’m not sure if that is true, but that could be a better used of his trade value next summer....

That's all true, but the post I was responding to suggested the Rockets gathering up enough non-guaranteed contracts to trade for JR without us taking on money. That cannot happen.

It's only valuable until the league year changes over. I believe it becomes guaranteed around July 1. But because he was signed under the old CBA his contract is tradeable at full value after the trade deadline in that trade window that reopens after the Finals leading up to the moratorium. New contracts that have a partially guaranteed year for the next season are only valued at that partial guarantee for trade purposes after the trade deadline.

This article is fake news, it says Cleveland Cavaliers STAR. It must be talking about the new mayor of Cleveland - Tristan Thompson.

Anybody knows if the report that Houston might be interested in JR is true?

Sound like total BS to me, but hey if they really want him they can get him for a nice dishwasher or maybe a nice high end coffee machine for the staff

They are offering Ryan Anderson and scraps for him. JR is better then Anderson. As sad as that may be.

Anderson is better than JR, easily.

His contract is just worse.

Maybe if we’re talking about an entire season and comparing starting roles. JR as a starter was really, really bad this year and likely one if the five worst starters on a Finals team in NBA history.

But if we’re talking playoffs, JR is actually playable whereas Ryan Anderson is not; JR is easily the more useful player.

In the 96 minutes Anderson was on court in the playoffs, Houston had a 99 ORTG and a 126.5 DRTG. Houston was 33 points per 100 possessions better with Anderson off court.

1. Houston needs shooters who can defend threes. Yes, JR gets lost out there at times, but JR’s BBIQ is at Einstein levels compared to Gerald Green’s for example, which might be at cucumber levels. Green only makes the correct rotation seemingly by accident.

—In the playoffs, opponents shot 6.8% WORSE from 3 against JR than they did relative to their normal percentages. He was the 11th best defender of three pointers in the 2018 playoffs (4+ threes defended, 6+ games played)

—He was the third best defender of spot up shooting in the playoffs (.62 PPP given up) ahead of

Simmons (.65)
KD (.71)
Brogdon (.74)
Draymond (.82)
Rubio (.86)
Giannis (.89)
Klay (.90)
PG13 (.93)
Tatum (.98)
Ariza (1.03–Ariza was the best defender of spot up threes in the NBA regular season)
Jaylen Brown (1.06)
PJ Tucker (1.08)
CP3 (1.14)
Iggy (1.15)
Covington (1.16)
John Wall (1.17)
Eric Gordon (1.19)
Donovan Mitchell (1.42)
Smart (1.49)
Reddick (1.55)
Beal (1.59)

As a bench player, JR would be really useful with CP3 and/or Harden on court.

I disagree. Neither are really positive players currently. But the contract is the main difference in the value of either player. Andersons contract is untradeable and JR is essentially an expiring.

I think you are missing on the fact that JR, at his age, is free-falling as a player and he’s likely to be even less motivated with LeBron gone.

Take into account that he’s a toxic player who I want nowhere near young players, and yes, I’d rather have Ryan Anderson 100 times out of 100.

I agree that his contract is awful, hence why we would need incentive to swap contracts. But I would argue that JR is very very close to being out of the NBA.

Oh, and I’m pretty sure Ryan Anderson can keep track of the score.

They showed interest in JR, but I doubt it will lead to anything in the short term. Probably something to consider around the trade deadline. Plenty of time to find a third team to make a deal work

Not to derail the thread with fantasy trades, but I do think a fairly simple three-way deal could be arranged currently.

Houston receives JR Smith from Cleveland. At $14.7 million with a slight partial guarantee in year 2, this is perfect for Houston. Not only do they save a ton of money in tax this season and gain future flexibility, but they also are likely the only contending team that has a role for JR to contribute off the bench. He fits their system perfectly, and they’re only attached to him for a year.

Atlanta receives Ryan Anderson and a 2020 1st from Houston. Yes, he is owed $20+ million over the next two seasons. However, the Hawks have been in great need of a stretch four, and Anderson can do that job as well as anyone. Likewise, they are compensated for this by receiving a future 1st from Houston to add to their hoard of draft capital. Additionally, they are getting off their own bad contract in the process as you will see next.

Cleveland receives Kent Bazemore from Atlanta and a 2021 2nd from Houston. In addition, Cleveland gets the protections moved from Top 10 protected to Top 20 protected in 2019 and Top 14 protected in 2020 for the 1st they owe Atlanta. The Cavs get a plug and play 3&D shooting guard to pair perfectly between Cedi and Sexton. He’s overpaid at $18+ million over the next two years, but he’s a good teammate and he’ll help this team win—which it appears we are trying to do. Cleveland has shown interest in Bazemore in the past, and has discussed taking him as recently as this past June. We also get rid of JR Smith and the influence he may have had on our young roster. Additionally, by slightly upping the protections on the owed first, we get a little more breathing room now that Cleveland is in a quest for the 8-seed.

You disagree with what? Did I not just say the contract is the problem?

In a vacuum, I’d rather have Anderson as a player and teammate over JR. However, given the contract situation, JR is significantly more desirable as a trade asset. I just said this in my post. Read more carefully.

It’s creative. The only issue is they remain in cap limbo by extending thr expenditures with Bazmore into year 2. They payoff is likely recouping the first round pick for 2019.
Right now they’re looking at 50+ million in cap space in a couple years.
