This is the appropriate thread for talking about a Kawhi fantasy trade scenario. I've been hearing from Marcus Thompson - who isn't exactly Bible truth but he is plugged in - that San Antonio is throwing Kawhi the designated veteran contract, or Super Max.
2019–2020 NBA Salary Cap Projection: $108,000,000
Year 1–2019–2020
$108,000,000 * (.35) = $37,800,000
Year 2–2020–2021
$37,800,000 * (1.08) = $40,824,000
Year 3–2021–2022
$40,824,000 * (1.16) = $43,848,000
Year 4–2022–2023
$43,848,000 * (1.24) = $46,872,000
Year 5–2023–2024
$46,872,000 * (1.32) = $49,896,000
Nothing like multi-millions to change your mind.
In total, Kawhi could sign a 5 year/$219,240,000 contract with the San Antonio Spurs in the summer of 2018.
Yeah it's over. Money cures a lot of ill will.
But I'm not sure how this changes things? Kawhi already knew this as he became eligible last season, as did the Spurs. He became eligible for the DPE once he made the All-NBA team last spring..
So, I wasn't sure how this wasn't already the deciding factor, and how it would really make sense that this would be a late play by the Spurs .. so I did the math.
By my math, using your 2019-20 proj. cap figure, Keys; Kawhi would only lose $8.8M over 6 years by changing teams and not getting the DPE.
The reason is because he's already got 7 years under his belt, and he's got another guaranteed year on his contract; so his extension doesn't kick in until his option year (2019-20). But that's not all that advantageous to Kawhi, because in 2020, he'll be a 10 year vet, qualifying for 35% of the cap without the DPE.
So if you do the math, his max earnings with the Spurs DPE is $241.86M, and his max earnings with a 1+1 Durant/James style contract are $233.03M; again, a difference of only $8.8M.
That's less that CP3, Durant and James sacrificed when changing their teams.
So I can't see this as the deciding factor for Kawhi given that (1) both he and the Spurs knew the DPE was a given last summer, and (2) the amount of money is not really that big of a deal relatively speaking; and (3) this would give the Spurs 6 years of team control over Kawhi.
This would mean Kawhi would be committing to being a Spur until he was 33 years old.
However, if Kawhi believes his health is truly up in the air, then a guaranteed quarter-billion isn't something one can just pass up.
