don't overlook the teams who strike out on big name free agents in the upcoming off seasons.
Almost seems like a foregone conclusion that the Lakers will be engaging us hard next summer when their plan to appease LeBron with a big FA splash dramatically implodes.

Kevin Love to the Lakers has seemed like one of our top options for assets since LeBron went to LA. Love and McGee are the perfect front court combination for LeBron.

I think that would be a tremendous scenario if it plays out like that. Lakers do have some young pieces that I absolutely love (primarily Kuzma and Hart).

Kuzma is having a strange year playing next to LeBron/Rondo/McGee etc.. I feel like he may be wanting out after this year if they don't start utilizing him more. Kid's a freaking stud.

Lakers have no salary assets to make a significant deal work though. Love is a 2nd tier guy, so they aren't going to be trading Lozno / Ingram / Etc. for him, which makes the financials a lot harder.

They have LeBron at an insane number ($36+ per year) and then a collection of young guys on rookie deals. They had to clear out all the salary matching money left on their books to get LeBron.

Their only moveable salary piece (KCP) can waive any trade as a one-year bird rights player. I doubt he wants to head to the Cleveland dumpster fire for 6 months but who knows.

Salary aggregate needs to be within $5 mil for LA and I don't see $19 million in obvious salary that could go out for Love......unless KCP is unhappy and just wants to play heavy minutes and take shots.

For the sake of this argument (in January), lets assume KCP will go to Cleveland. Cavs would likely be looking at something like:

Out: Kevin Love

In: KCP, Zubac, Mykhailiuk, Beasley + some pick(s)

That is just a player poo-poo platter. But it is a bulk of expiring money. Start clearing the deck and stash whatever picks LA gives up.

The upside being we would really corner the market on unplayable, white European big men.

The Lakers just don't seem like a great trade partner because none of their good or above average young players are expendable for a PF.

There isn't a universe where LA trades Kuzma in a Love deal IMO. Kuzma just turned 23 and is under cost control for several more years.

With LeBron's salary ballooning, they need to hang on young players unless it is for an elite guy (Kawhi, etc.). Love just doesn't fall in to that category IMO.

I'm sure they are more inclined to just send out future draft assets then to give up on someone like Kuzma, even if there is locker-room tension.

That trade offer is so insanely awful and grotesque that I actually think I'd relinquish my Cavs fandom solely because of the horrendous-ness of that trade.

IMHO, the Lakers would overpay for Love for a variety of reasons. Love isn't going to help the Lakers beat the Warriors in the short term, but he's a PR goldmine. It's all about money.

I'm not sure what else is realistic.

The Lakers aren't trading Ingram / Ball / Kuzma for Love IMO.

To me, the expendable piece would be Hart. So maybe you can twist their arm and get him.....but I just don't see a great asset match.

Someone like Portland is a far more realistic partner, if they have any interest in Love.

Out: Kevin Love
In: Turner, Simmons, 2nd

Portland then has:

PG: Lillard
SG: McCollum
SF: Fill this via trade with your 1st rounder
PF: Nurkic / Love
C: Collins

Nurkic / Love / Collins is an awesome mix of lineup versatility and Love is a really nice match for what they do.

Cavs would get back a developmental SG in Simmons, who I personally liked a lot heading in to the draft.

Ok, i like K Love, good guy and all, but lets call it what it is...K LOVE IS A PUSSY. I cannot believe he couldnt make it through 4 games. Seriously? Now he is out for who knows how long. The Cavs are in a deep dark shithole the likes that ive never seen before. It all started when we traded Kyrie for garbage and it has snowballed from there. Giving guys bad contracts. Right now they have to be the worst run org in sports. I cant think of one worse. Im at the point where im missing Ricky Davis.,..thats how bad it is.

IMHO, it started when King James let Irving know privately that he was going to the Lakers at the end of his contract. AFTER the draft, of course.

Maybe Windhorst' next book...
