They can't do that. If they're voted in as starters, it would be blatantly disrespectful as hell, being healthy, to not play.

The All-Star game is a reward game for the fans. The scrutiny would be never ending if they all skipped it. Not happening.

Not to mention these guys all I have a ton of pride and they take it personally when someone is chosen to play over them. The All Star Game is no joke to these guys. It means something for their legacy.

It can also have contractual implications and kickers that are put in motion when a guy makes the ASG or wins MVP, etc.

Our guys understand how to handle these things and they'll get plenty of rest between now and the playoffs.

The players love the ASG as much as the fans.

No way they skip it unless there was some controversy. Especially if all three make it.

They play just 20 minutes, zero defense, it's a glorified practice anyway.

I am 100% against players skipping the all-star game. The fans. They pay for their large salaries, deserve to have a game, once a year, to see their favorite players.

but guys like Thomas I just can't really wrap my head around. He's so manufactured it's just a joke IMHO.

A hasty calculation of if Kyrie got the same free throws that Thomas currently does this season:

Kyrie's total season points [726] - Kyrie's total FTM [115] = 611
Thomas' FTA per game [8.8] x Kyrie's games played [30] = 264
264 FTAs x Kyre's FT% [.885] = 233.64
611 + 233.64 = 844.64
844.64 / 30 = 28.1 ppg

Punch Kyrie's new 844.64 into the TS% formula and you get 0.618.

28.1 ppg @ .618 TS%

The NBA's leading scoring guards/wings ppg/TS%:

Russell Westbrook 31.4/.546
James Harden 27.9/.609
DeMar DeRozan 27.6/.550
Damian Lillard 26.8/.597
LeBron James 26.1/.595
Kevin Durant 25.9/.647

Exactly.

And this is what I mean by real analytics... You've always gotta dig deeper than just what's posted on BKREF.

Great post...

It's also worth noting that from the best team to the worst team in the league there is less than a 10 FTA/G variance between teams; so free throw rates do not scale linearly with players -- i.e., if you put 3 superstars on the same team, each will need to share a portion of a limited amount of free throws per game.

tl;dr, refs calling free throws is a subjective art of balancing what they think is best for the game, including the pacing of the game and balance of the game; it's not an objective science, never has been, and Irving is getting robbed compared to some of these guys going to the line 9 times a game.

Great post,

Kyrie's scoring would be unfair if he was refereed accordingly to his peers.

IT is having a great year, no doubt, but the calls he gets are beyond absurd.

His efficiency has predictably fallen off a goddamn cliff in the playoffs thus far in his career.

But, he is not meant to be a #1 option. Probably not even #2.

I do think he has shown he's more than a 6th man, though. At worst, he is a legitimate #3 option on a Championship team IMO...of course, his defense is so exploitable (especially in the playoffs) that you may have to bring him off the bench on a Championship team. It's tough to say until we see him playing with better players.

He is a good player, and certainly All-Star worthy. Again, he is having a great year. But lots of his production this season is certainly being manufactured by whistles.

Will be interesting to see if he can ever put together a good postseason, but due to his size I fear that will never happen unless he's put in a role that better suits him.

To be fair to IT. I do think he is great as drawing a lot of fouls for the record. That is a skill and I'm not against a player utilizing that to their advantage. Given how small he his, in his case, he has to.

He's very good at absorbing contact, and given how small he is, it's easier for the officials to see that.

I think the bigger/stronger you are it's much more difficult. There are many, many, many times LeBron is fouled but he just soaks up the contact so well and the refs miss it.

Kyrie is very strong too.

I think Lowry is one of the stronger point guard's in the NBA, and Kyrie was able to move him. That's how strong Kyrie is. He kinda has that babe face look to him, but he's really built for a guard. This is why bigger players struggle so much against him too. Because they can't utilize their size/strength and Kyrie can just dribble circles around them.

Now, Lowry gets a lot of calls because when he gets contact, he falls to the ground immediately. Kyrie never does that. When he falls, it's legit. And hell, sometimes he still doesn't get the call.

Just one observation on why Kyrie might not always get the calls his way.

When Thomas is getting hit at his height, it's almost always hard not to see it.

IT's ridiculous FT rate is in direct relation to his miniature frame and inability to maintain his balance when he is played with even a modicum of physical defense. It also doesn't hurt that he will not hesitate to exaggerate contact, making every tiny pull/push/slap look egregious.

Kyrie is exactly the opposite. He is very difficult to knock off balance even if the defender is trying and he'll often overpower bigger defenders. Additionally, he almost never exaggerates any contact to sell a call, always trying his level best to actually make the basket.

This hurts KI and helps IT in the regular season. Unfortunately for the Celtics, it reverses in the playoffs.

Not saying they should skip it. Just saying that I certainly wouldn't mind if any were left off the team.

Obviously they are all making it and likely will be named starters

Was slumming over at RealGM.

Toronto fans arguing that Kyrie shouldn't be an All-Star, Lowry is 10x the leader etc. Cold weather is freezing their brains up there.

I think you can at least make an argument that Lowry is a better regular season player than Kyrie, but anyone who would rather have him in the playoffs when it matters is a fucking lunatic. Lowry turns into a pumpkin in the postseason. Kyrie gets better.

Isiah Thomas seems like one of the more extreme examples of what this offensive explosion and the rules changes re perimeter defense are doing. Along with the foul shooting benefits of being the only good offensive player on what is supposed to be a leading team in the conference.

Counting the incomplete stats from this year, there are only 16 seasons in NBA history where a guard has averaged 28+ PPG and 6+ assists. Six of those fifteen have happened in the last three years. Five of the six are by Curry, Westbrook, and Harden, and one is by Isiah Thomas. I think even Curry/Westbrook/Harden stats are inflated by the era and some generous foul calls, but I think they would be great in any era. Not so sure about Thomas. Good sure, but historically great?
