Larry Sanders Show anyone?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Why would anyone in their right mind want Sanders on this team? We have a good thing going right now and there's actual chemistry. Please don't bring in Sanders who will just fuck that all up.

jesus, The Players Tribune is honestly the best thing to happen in sports journalism in years. it's the perfect counter piece to the fixed narrative of the established media like ESPN, and makes for a genuine look into the minds of athletes, which is something ESPN has never been able to pull off that well.

That was great. Unfortunately, it's the national sports media's job to paint that professional sports are how these uber-talented athletes establish who is the best, from a competitive standpoint. It keeps viewers interested, as well as prospective players focused, to achieve the "greatest achievement" of making it in the NFL, NBA, etc. Once they make it in the league, we rarely here about the PERSON unless they've made a mistake. Sure, some of the biggest athletes get acclaim for their charitable work but that coverage is still driven by capturing a larger audience, i.e., making more money for both the respective sport and the media conglomerate that covers it.

Larry Sanders brings up incredibly human points; money isn't the most important thing in life, family and other relationships are. Yet, we jump to the conclusion that he is a coke addict. "How could he walk away from so much money? He must be into some heavy-handed shit." It's sad but unfortunately, that is how the media operates.

If there is any player in the league capable of mentoring a player like this, by creating a family atmosphere in the locker room, it's LBJ. With that said, I respect Sanders more now than i ever did and if he does decide to come back to the league, he should be welcomed back with open arms.

Damn, can't believe his depression was bad enough that he got hospitalized.

Def agree with him regarding some of his other points as well.

So, does this mean when he has figured out his values and purpose in life he will come to us on a vet minimum deal in 2 years?

Damn, that's crazy man. Makes me feel bad for him and it sucks because we really don't know what he is going through and how he feels so it's hard to relate. I hope he gets better and things end well and he has the right support system behind him because if he doesn't it's usually not pretty. Sad to see him leave because he played the game the way a center should defensively and was fun to watch but I understand his reasons and wish him the best.

The depression aspect of this is interesting, because if you proceed from the assumption that he felt compelled to dedicate himself completely to something (basketball) that he really didn't like very much, and to do that for most of a decade....well, it's easy to see how that could lead to depression.

Good for him. He's made enough money to make himself and his family secure for the rest of his life, so now he can get started on actually living it.

Depression is real and debilitating.

I was happy to see he's enlightened enough to seek treatment and take care of himself. You have to give a guy like that credit.

If he chooses to he can get back into the NBA at a later point.
