Larry Sanders

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Remember when Dallas brought in Lamar Odom? Wasn't that the year after they won the title?

That move completely imploded their locker room. Removing him from the team didn't fix anything.

That's what the Cavs would be risking on this scrub.
Any team with Lebron James on the team is the Patriots of the NBA, in terms of locker room and internal strife being a non factor. For all of the greatness Lebron possesses on the floor it may be his off the floor characteristics (leadership) that makes him amazing.

As much as we slobber all over Lebron look at other high class professional athletes. There was a thing on Odell Beckham before the games yesterday where he said the coolest thing his nasty catch last year did was get Lebron to tweet about him which then in turn turned into a friendship. Lebron is a celebrity to celebrities and people do what he says simple as that.

Didn't work that way with Shaq.

Comparing this organization to the Patriots is comical.

I really don't think he does anything "for the minimum". And we can't even offer him any PT.

To me, this greatly magnifies the already most likely scenario that he is a malcontent and causes trouble. You're going to pay him almost nothing, play him little if at all, and then hope his attitude somehow turns around?

That's almost literally impossible.

A backup rim protector would surely be useful right now.

The Patriots get rid of guys who don't buy in, and are selective in who they pick up. If they think the particular problem a guy has is one they can manage, they'll take a shot. But they pass by an awful lot of headcases as well.

Dion didn't.

Sanders on Potential Return

"Once my art, music and passions off the court feel stable, I will look into coming back. I still love basketball. I want stability around me, and part of my mindset to leave was not to put all my eggs in one basket.

I feel highly valuable on any team. There aren't a lot of people who can bring my game to a team. I still play basketball all the time, staying in shape. I will need to make sure the situation is right for me."

With the recent rumors of Larry Sanders working out and wanting to make a comeback (His Twitters hints and the more recent news that Warriors are not interested), what do we have to offer to sign him? Do we only have the Vet Min for 1 year? Would there be anyway to sign him to a multi year deal? Just trying to get a grasp on what we can sign him to and how we can keep him here long term. I dont believe we have a MLE to offer for multiyear since it was mainly used on Jefferson. I think he would be a perfect fit behind Tristan and the perfect fit for how this team wants to play going forward. Young, athletic big that plays much bigger than his size, rim protection, better offensive game than Tristan.

I would take him if LeBron can keep his head on straight like he did with J.R, Sanders was one of the best defensive/athletic bigs in the NBA, I wouldn't mind taking a chance on him, if it doesn't work out griffin can always cut him, high reward low risk imo.

Exactly.... He was actually the same type of players as Tristan is now.... but better rim protection, better offensive game. He would fit in perfectly. Yes he had his issues.. but the fact he gave up alot of money to get the help he needed, shows he took it very seriously. With having LeBron and JR Smith around.. with the type of locker room we have would actually put Larry in the best position to succeed both on the court and off the court. To be this would be a no brainer to bring him aboard. I was more curious how he would fit in financially with our cap situation this year and for years to come in order to keep him here. For example if we signed him to a vet minimum for a year or two, would we always have right to resign him to higher amounts even if we are over the cap? The dude was making about 11 mil a year before the buyout and the fear I would have is that we sign him to vet for a year and he returns to form, would we even be able to sign him to a much bigger contract to keep him here if we over the cap?

Cavs only have the vet min to offer Sanders; same as the Warriors.

It is highly unlikely Sanders would sign a multi-year vet min deal, unless the second year is a player option.

So at what point can we sign Sanders to a longer term deal at a much higher amount? is it after year 2 or 3 to get his bird rights? so until then he would have to sign vet min deals?

Cavs could use the taxpayer MLE next season. If Sanders waits 3 years, we could sign him using his full Bird Rights.

Anything other than that won't be more than other teams could offer outright with the Full MLE. So.. the Cavs' chance of retention would be close to nil, unless we somehow ended up below the apron after signing LeBron to the full max.

Sounds like getting him is a pipe dream. I can't see a guy coming back for that, given what Gour said. If I were him I'd be looking to get paid.

Much rather have him than Birdman, but the Birdman is probably the best we can do realistically though.

Sucks, he'd be a perfect fit if he wouldn't go crazy on us.
