It's 'the understanding' because the dude has manipulated his family for their entire lives.
You're right that he's not risking much of his own personal money, which to me, is a bigger indication of his character. Calling him smart because he's willing to mess with his son's financial future just doesn't add up for me.
The point that you are missing is that LaVar Ball is not a dictator. There are many people in the Ball family who are running things. His brothers are just as responsible for their family success as LaVar is. LaVar is just the guy you see in your face everyday. Remember this guy was making the minimum in The NFL. He took that back to his family and they all flipped that and it has partly led to what they have now.
This wasn't just LaVar sitting on a throne and abusing his kids into being NBA stars. It's nothing like that at all but a lot of criticism paints it that way. I bet you didn't even know about LaVar's brothers or all the extended family members that he employs. He really is just apart of a large community of people. Every time people see his face they start the here we go again stuff but what they don't see is that there's tens of people behind all of this. It's not just LaVar talking shit which is largely what people see him doing. They don't see his brothers running successful businesses or giving jobs to whole families.
If you ask Lonzo, Gelo, or Melo who's responsible for hem being where they are of course they'll say their parents first but the rest of their family also plays a very large roll and people would rather just hate LaVar than acknowledge that this is bigger than LaVar.
