Luka Doncic

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Doncic was always going to be at worst a solid NBA player. Too talented and smart to be a bust, and unlike many of the prospects coming out of College he understands how to play within a team system, played very few dead games in his career. Have to think young players learn more from trying to win and failing than in a true tank.

Where does this Luka dribbling too much come from? He always makes something out of his moves, his teammates don’t fully cooperate, but the one who does know how to play with great shot creator does -DAJ and Luka makes it easy for him. But he is not the LeBron type, where everyone should just stand and wait for the ball, he needs the offense to move when he moves. He is the type you can put on a contender and would fit right in and play. Because learned at Real, who is THE contender in Europe and winning is expected.
He will never just blow by defenders, but look at Harden he always plays trough contact and he is one of the best in the NBA. He won’t be the go to superstar in the classic sense but the Ginobili type (or maybe someone pre GS/Bron era- these fucers destroyed the plurality of NBA) of effect on a team is still exceptional.

Doncic should handle the ball way more. Should be the primary ball handler. Actually, they are giving the ball way too much to DSJ.

Luka is a better and much more ready player than Sexton, so the comparison doesn't quite fit.
Yeah I wasn't really trying to compare the 2. I just thought it was interesting that the Mavs have already given Doncic free reign of the offense. I saw his game against the Bulls and I was just like, 'wow, that didn't take long'. Seemed to me he was already the primary ball handler and had pushed DSJ to off guard after like 1 game.

Honestly, so far it seems like he does a lot of things well (especially for his age) but isn't really great at anything. He'll definitely be a good player but will he be a great player? The fact that he is pretty meh as an athlete makes me wonder how much of an extra gear he will show as he gains experience. I mean, he will certainly improve but how much? With star athletes there is a high ceiling when they match their brains with their athleticism. His brains are already there but what is his athletic ceiling?

So far he does seem to resemble a Hedo Turkoglu type player, although not as good as peak Hedo yet (his 3-pointer is not as reliable). Hedo Turkoglu was a quite good player at his peak, but if that turns out to be Doncic's ceiling that will be a disappointment.

He's currently on pace to rank...

-4th all time among teenagers in points per game
-7th all time among teenagers in rebounds per game
-10th all time among teenagers in assists per game

Probably too soon to worry about his ceiling being Hedo Turkoglu.

Thought Hedo was going to be a star when he was getting minutes as a young man on stacked Kings team but Doncic is a much better passer and shooter then Turk. Be more then surprised if Doncic isn't better then him and Turk was a borderline all star type when he was on the roids :chuckle:

If you compare them at the same age, they're so far apart it's not even funny. When Turk was the same age Doncic is now he was still two years away from his NBA debut. He had a total of 11 Euroleague games under his belt, with career averages of 2.3 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 0.3 assists. Not hating on him...just making the point that very few players are good enough at age 19 to earn NBA minutes, let alone make a positive impact.

From what I've seen he has all the tools and skills to challenge Dirk as the best European player ever in the NBA. He has a loooong way to go but that kid looks phenomenal for a 19 year old rookie.

Cavs fans spoiled a little bit because we had LeBron and then Kyrie. Other than those two, how many teenagers in NBA history could score like this?

The comparison I liked the most coming into the draft was Harden-lite. But honestly, the more I watch him the more I think he can even surpass Harden in 3-4 years. He's already light years ahead of Harden on the defensive end. Being an All-Star seems like his floor right now.

They were down 18-4 to the Raptors in Toronto and Doncic helped them crawl their way back into it and get within 1 before he sat and the lead went back up to 8 or 10. They were +2 with Doncic on court even after being down 14 early. Thsts incredibly impressive the way Lowry has been playing, Kawhi, Siakam, Green...I’m still in shock that a team like the Kings (well, I guess it’s the Kangz @TyGuy ) could so stupid to take a non-defensive, non offense creating player like Bagley given all the data we have about players and their contributions to winning in modern basketball. It’s just stunning to me.

Doncic does just about everything well or really well to ameliorate for lack of explosiveness and isn’t anywhere near the best physical shape he can be in. If I’m the Mavs, I give Smith this year to show that he can be effective with and without the ball and also not be a complete defensive sieve. If he doesn’t show it, trade him and give Doncic the ball and let him be a 28%+ usage guy. Brunson looks like a steal as most of the things he did in college seem to be translating
