Luka Doncic

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Dallas hit a grand slam by moving up to get him. I wish the Cavs truly had a chance instead of just being used as leverge for Atlanta to extract Dallas' 2019 likely mid lottery pick, They're in a pretty good place. They have some nice young guys to develop and some vets to teach them the right way, a great coach in Carlisle. Now they just have to avoid doing anything stupid while they continue to develop their young guys and wait out Barnes' contract. In about 2-3 years if their front office is patient they will be in a place to major leap forward.

Dallas is what it looks like when a non-playoff team is actually embarked on a successful rebuilding with light at the end of the tunnel. Kind of nice from a sentimental perspective too that Dirk will be around for at least the beginning of it. Maybe he'll even be able to see Dallas taking the next step to become a playoff team again before he retires.

Some of the Mavs are really dumb. You can see Dirk going crazy at times. Even Luka showed some disgust at some plays... In Real he played with some of the best Europe has (Lull, Fernandez, Reyes and even Randolph and Taylor have se decent bball mind), it looks he can’t really believe what some of his new teammates are doing.
I wished we somehow got him but was afraid we would ruin him with surrounding talent etc. But Dallas sure has some bimbos playing.. I hope Ace Ventura in Dallas brings things together.
He is of course still just a rookie (some skills and body), but his experience and understanding of the game is far ahead.

One thing I really like about guys like Doncic with the tremendous BBIQ is that they tend to attract/help expose/identify other players who also have a more advanced understanding. If you're a young guy with a pretty good BBIQ, but the rest of your team plays stupidly, your ability may go unnoticed. But with a guy like Doncic, who will notice and make the right pass to a guy who make the right cuts, or will take advantage of the big men who know how to set good screens, etc., smarter players are more likely to thrive. Having Doncic will help them build an entire culture of guys who play smart basketball. And on the opposite end, guys who play dumb will be more easily exposed.

You figure out who plays well with Doncic, and you're on your way. Great move (and lucky) move by Dallas

How do people feel about the match between Dennis Smith, DeAndre Jordan, and Doncic? Seems like that is the core Dallas wants to build around

DeAndre is 30 and doesn't fit their timeline. He's just a temporary piece since his game won't age well. Dennis Smith is still very much a question mark - there are some big red flags in his game. Luka looks like an actual franchise cornerstone though, even if it's only 8 games.

yeah Smith has a lot of talent but he shows some disturbing signs of being a high-scorer-on-a-bad-team low efficiency volume shooter type player

After 7-8 games of Luka.......I trade Smith for whatever spacing I can get for him. He's just not a match playing with Doncic.

He's just not very good period. A smaller point guard that doesn't shoot well just doesn't have that great of an impact. This situation is magnified though because the only value he can possible bring is if he has the ball in his hands; which he is getting less of.

I'd try to trade Beal for their non-Luka assets including Smith. He would be terrific fit Doncic and is only 25

Doncic in clutch time: 21 points on 8/13 shooting in 22 minutes.

All other rookies combined in clutch time: 25 points on 7/26 shooting in 78 minutes.

Amazingly, with as good as Luka has been, it's possible Atlanta will have almost washed that trade if they make a good selection (plus starter) with that Dallas pick.

I would prefer Luka but Young has looked good for a player that is still a bit raw and can get better. His efficiency numbers aren't bad and he has yet to shoot to his ability from 3. If he's even 36-37% from 3......he's possibly a 46%-ish guy from the field. Young is drawing fouls at a much higher rate than expected and has shown the ability to actually get to the rim and finish (63%).

I still like Luka better (and would do the Dallas trade 10 out of 10 times) but has the possibility to be one of the rare cases where a trade might work out for both teams.

Possibly...it remains to be seen how cripplingly bad Young's defense will be (and how sneaky-good Luka's defense might be). That's where the gap between the two could be enormous. Atlanta may well have to plan their entire roster around hiding Trae on defense.

Also worth noting that Luka's actually half a year younger than Trae (and amazingly, even slightly younger than Sexton). He's still a long way from reaching his potential too, which is a scary thought.

Yeah, no doubt. I have just been really surprised Young has been as good as he has been.

Luka has a higher ceiling, because of his frame and versatility but Young certainly has a shooting level to go up, which would put him in pretty elite territory when you mix in his AST numbers (if he can get in the 20/9 range on efficient shooting). The bigger surprise has been that he has actually been showing signs of being able to finish over length, which was something I really thought he would not be able to do.

Certainly, you need to pick a SG and SF that helps mitigate his defense but I've been really surprised he has been as effective as he has on offense.....and certainly just generally creating. 9+ AST per 36, as a rookie, is pretty crazy.....especially with him actually doing a pretty good job of reigning in his TO's.

Looks like one of the better rookie classes in some time at the top. Still can't believe we missed on a top 5 pick. Ugh.
