The Philadelphia 76ers have waived newly acquired center JaVale McGee, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Sixers, after their loss Sunday night at Indiana, consented to waive McGee before the midnight deadline that makes McGee eligible to appear in the playoffs this season with another team.

ESPN.com first reported Sunday that the Sixers and McGee's representatives had launched serious buyout talks.

Yet USA Today reported early Monday that McGee was able to secure his release from the Sixers without surrendering any of next season's $12 million salary or what's left of this season's $11.25 million.

Once he clears waivers this week, McGee will become a free agent. He initially said upon being dealt to the Sixers that he did not want a buyout, but ESPN.com reported Sunday that McGee's representatives were on the hunt to find a team interested in signing the 7-footer.

What teams are in the market for another big? I know there's quite a few Western Conference contenders (Clippers, Mavericks, Warriors, etc.) that were looking to snag another big man for their bench. I'd expect him to head out that way.

So the Sixers bought him out, but he kept the entire contract?

No sir they cut him meaning they are responsible for paying him this year and next. Unless a team claims him off waivers and then that team becomes responsible.

That's gotta towards the top of the list of most expensive (in a vacuum) 1st round picks. Obviously they were under the cap floor, so it didn't matter too much, but dang, taking on $12M + whatever amount of this years $11.25M they were on the hook for... That's an expensive pick, and probably not even that good of one.

LOL. Thats what I get for not reading.

They would have had to spend that money to hit the salary floor, the difference is now they get a first round pick. If they had just spent it to hit the floor it would have been evenly spread out to their roster. So it is basically a 1st round pic for money they would have had to spend anyways.

Does he have to be signed today or did he just need bought out by today?

Teams can't sign players after the last game of the regular season, which is when the luxury tax bill is calculated. That effectively locks in the playoff rosters.

So, beyond not being the most intelligent player (barring losing him to waivers), is there any reason why we shouldn't go after this guy? It seems like he would be a huge upgrade over Perkins. His per 36 numbers aren't terrible at all for a 4th big. 16.8 PER before being traded also.

Because there's nothing inside McGee's head. Absolutely no basketball IQ whatsoever.

Perkins is pretty bad, there's no way he's more valuable than Javale. Unfortunately it seems unlikely we're interested.

Javale would be perfect fit for OKC's iso / create his own bad shot system.

7'6 wingspans on Lebron's team are deadly. The guy's gotta be able to get it together mentally, he's 27 and would be fighting for a spot in the league, we'd have an ideal situation for him. Javale is clearly way more talented than Perkins and he's bigger. If it is possible for us to get him, I can't imagine a better opportunity.
