Moneyball Comes to Cleveland

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Good to know we're well stocked with MENSA guys.

Maybe when hiring the smartest guys in the room didn't work Jimmy will focus on hiring football guys during the next rebuild.

Color me extremely unimpressed with all these flashy genius types that have exactly zero background in identifying NFL talent.

People continue to ignore that the new GM will be responsible for scouting and will basically be the Director of Player Personnel/Scouting Director.

Way way way too much emphasis is being put on Brown & DePodesta "making football decisions" when that's not the case in the least bit.

By all accounts, Brown will basically be a mediator between all parties and will have final say based on recommendations by all if there's a dispute of any sort. He will also control the cap and negotiations (which he's been doing).

DePodesta will only have a say in player personnel by inputting what the analytics say.

It's a massively big change like hiring a koala to babysit your human toddler after three consecutive kangaroos let the kid escape from the house.

Hey Jigo! I hear you're a great salesman and I think you're a smart guy... I'd like to hire you to do the brakes on my car.

Yeah, but which stat will he value more? On base percentage or slugging percentage?

The hires are unconventional to say the least but to say smart people can't find talent is a little short sighted in my opinion. We put this thing out there we need a 'football guy' like it's this mythical existence. The job is evaluating information that includes data, human psychology, fit on the field and in the culture, eye ball test and gut feel. I don't know if these guys will be any good. The problem with it is, no one really does know that since they've never done that. But to be mad because they aren't 'football guys' I think is a little weak.

We need more football guys.

Just so we can talk about the intangibles of the draft prospects to determine whether or not they have enough "IT" factor.

I love this hires if for no other reason than they're the antithesis of what the standard AM radio host wants in a front office.

If they want someone to input what the analytics say, hire one of those quantum computers. They should be available at the next regime change. @gourimoko

At least admit that it sounds hilarious that the Browns, after three regime changes in three years, have hired a career baseball executive for a large role in their front office.

You guys are clinging so desperately to some level of optimism for this team that you can't let yourselves see it.

You're very intelligent guys. You'll see. And you'll acknowledge what some of us are saying today once this regime with the ridiculous backgrounds fails.

Then again...if the attorney and the baseball guy are smart enough to pick the elite QB, they'll be hailed as geniuses when he wins them games.

Pray Goff is great, that they take him and then we won't have to worry about it.

Then again...don't you guys feel like the potentially great QB would be the conventional pick?

Uh oh...

They've got a lawyer and a baseball guy running a football operation.

Let's see if we can go for the trifecta and get a tennis playing doctor in there.

Though he is a baseball guy, he had a brief stint in the Canadian league and american hockey.

The "regime with the ridiculous backgrounds" isn't complete yet without the Head Coach and General Manager...

I can easily argue the opposite - there are people clinging so desperately to bash the Browns over every move they make, no matter what it is, because it's the insanely easy thing to do.

DePodesta is a master at arranging a front office. He worked incredibly well to rebuild the Mets, transformed the entire organization and scouting.

Does it transfer to the NFL? Hell if I know. But it works for me

To be fair, DePodesta supposedly really liked Russel Wilson coming out of college...

As a 2nd baseman prospect.

At least the Browns seem like they have a clear direction and are focused rather than the random "hire whoever will take the job" approach that previous searches felt like. This is something you and a lot of us have ripped them for in past coaching/front office searches.

Now, whether or not it works is a whole other question.
