New TV Series to watch

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Anyone watched 'The Crown'? I'm half-way through season 2 and can see why it's commanded the biggest Netflix budget in history. Brilliantly cinematic, breathtaking cinematography, incredible acting and storytelling (they dip into the accuracy of the history without too great a dramatization on most occasions) - just everything you'd want from a historical fact-based drama.

Being a big fan of Westworld, I just looked up what else Johnathan Nolan has done and found the TV show Person of Interest. Has anyone here watched that?
Yes. It starts a bit formulaic but like a lot of Nolan stuff it broadens out into some great ideas and concepts. Worth a watch

The Ash Vs Evil Dead episodes in the mental hospital are fantastic. Puppet Ash is my favorite character.

I just discovered black mirror. I am so excited. 3 episodes in.

It only took me five years to finally convince my girlfriend to watch The Sopranos, the greatest show in the history of television, IMO. While it feels a little dated, especially the first season, there have been few performances that rival James Gandolfini's portrayal of Tony Soprano. The writing is top-notch in my book as well. That show was just ahead of it's time in so many facets.

Curious as to other's GOAT show opinions?

I don't know why it's taken me this long to watch Peaky Blinders. Almost done with season 1 and I'm loving it. Cillian Murphy is the shit like always. Excited to see Tom Hardy show up. Thank god my girlfriend likes to watch actual good shows with me and none of that Grays Anatomy shit

I have Mad Men as mine. House of Cards was shaping up to be it, but has really fallen off. Haven't seen Sopranos because it was airing before my time and it's not on Netflix. I really should watch it though.

Yep, Mad Men is my #2 and i'd argue that Jon Hamm's portrayal of Don is right up there with Gandolfini. You should definitely find a way to watch Sopranos though... it is remarkably similar to Mad Men, IMO, in the way they develop characters. The way both Don and Tony are portrayed is executed flawlessly - studying their individual retrospective quiet moments, constantly reassessing themselves and often times not liking what they see leading to acting on impulse - few shows have developed well-rounded characters like that since.

Sure, at the end of the day it's about the mafia and that's obviously the main course but the way they are able to weave in compelling drama specific to family makes it much more accessible to the typical TV viewer.

Sopranos was great. My wife still expects their theme song to play every time the HBO logo displays.

Hard to pick a single GOAT show. Here are some shows in my contenders list. I'm sure I'm forgetting some

Current shows:

Game of Thrones
Westworld
Sherlock
Black Mirror
Stranger Things
Billions

Newish shows (the first two got me watching TV shows again after giving up on the format for years):

Breaking Bad
Doctor Who - David Tennant seasons and specials
The Night Of - a one off that was great
Boardwalk Empire

Classic shows:

Twilight Zone
Star Trek
Cheers - to this day I still use funny quotes from this show
Taxi - has there ever been a funnier TV scene than Jim, the funniest TV character ever, as a door to door salesman

Except maybe this scene from Frasier

You spelled The Wire wrong. :chuckle:

My picks for best shows of all time:

The Wire
The Shield
Breaking Bad
Battlestar Galactica (the newer one, obviously)
Friday Night Lights
Arrested Development
Firefly
Oz
Justified

Probably forgetting some but those shows are all fantastic.

Tried to get my wife into the Sopranos a few weeks ago. She suffered from what I did when I first tried to watch it, got bored as FXCK.

Has to be the most boring show on earth. Literally people just standing there talking for hours. Tons of lot dead air, about 1 piece of action every 2 or 3 episodes. Kind of reminded me of a soap opera- except those seem to be more exciting.

It's quite a feat to make something as cool as the mafia so dry and uninteresting.

Welp, I guess it's not for everyone. Curious to know how far you got through the series? From season 3 on, you've got pretty intriguing plot lines dispersed throughout. It took about halfway through the second season for HBO to find it's footing with it, IMO.
