New TV Series to watch

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Finished Looming Tower. I really like it. It was a much more flushed out story than I expected it to be. Usually a story based off of real events tends to just follow one character thru the events. This had alot of perspectives to build the story. Hopefully they can find another story to do a second season.

Really enjoying Jim Carrey in "Kidding" right now. Conceptually, it's exactly the kind of show I would have written if I was a screen writer. Dark, satirical, emotive, hilarious and everything in between.

Enjoying Banshee. Only 5 eps in, it's pretty unrealistic, gotta suspend your disbelief a bit. But very fun.

Finished season 3. This show is ridiculous, yet somehow I love it. It just fucking works and I don’t know why. Really, really enjoyed binging this. Sad that I’m nearing the finish.

Highly recommend everyone check out Bodyguard. It's a six episode British series starring Richard Madden (Robb Stark from Game of Thrones) as a bodyguard for a high-ranking British official who is the target of a terrorist plot. The sixth episode isn't out yet (Sunday, I believe), but the first five are fantastic. Keeps you constantly guessing as to what's going to happen next and who the bad guys are.

Tonight's Always Sunny was fantastic. I was a little underwhelmed with the premiere (great idea, mediocre execution) and I didn't really care for the second episode at all, but tonight was a home run. Constant laughs and they did an awesome job taking down the recent string of pointless all-female remakes like Ghostbusters and how they bring nothing new outside of a stupid gimmick.

Maniac is really weird but in a good sort of way. I think expectations were a bit too high for it. Def a interesting premise and solid show. I just don't think it quite grabbed me like I thought it might.

Sneaky Pete season 2 was very good. Little late to the game but there is simply too much TV right now.

I just finished Maniac. I felt exactly like you did. It was good but not great and I felt it was over hyped. I think the expectation just are too high when you get both Emma Stone and Jonah Hill for a Netflix show.

It might have been better served to have two lesser known actors and just have allowed people to find the show.

Yeah I think everyone just wanted to completely fall in love with the show with Cary Fukunaga directing and Jonah and Emma. And it was good. It just wasn't like True Detective Season 1 or something level of epic which is what I think people were hoping for with the star power attached to it.

Maniac looked like Cloud Atlas the Netflix series. I think people had high expectations for that one too and ended up being a little underwhelmed.

I find big Hollywood actors vastly overrated. Shows should invest in other areas and find hidden gems to fill those roles.

My favorite actors are actually tv show actors.

Started Atlanta: well done but can't keep the feeling that Donald Glover's character seem way to too urbane/sophisticated for his circumstances

I agree but I think the lines for exclusively movie and TV actors are almost gone now. There just aren't enough movies being made for alot of actors to just be movie actors. I think alot of movie actors seek out mini series and 8-12 episode per season tv series to keep them busy and have a steady income. Also I think some are doing these mini series to get an Emmy. That's what I think Jonah Hill and Emma Stone were doing with Maniac.

There use to be more tiers of movies being made which just allowed actors to be exclusively movie actors. Now I think there are big budget blockbuster movies and the movies going out for Oscars. The Indy movies of the past are gone and the middle of the road movies just there to entertain are far and few between. Netflix has picked up some of the slack on those type of movies but I think any good ideas are push to be a tv series. The quality of those movies just seem lacking now.

New broadcast shows impressions after their first episode:

Magnium PI- I thought it was good. Had some funny moments and had a good amount of action. I watch the original here and there as a kid, truely can't remember much of it. I only like a few procedurals so this is a show I'll evaluate week by week.

Manifest- this one grabbed me and it's something I'm looking forward to watch. I like the science fiction and mystery this show has in it's plot. I always hope for the next Lost. Hopefully they can keep building and not get boring along the way.

FBI- I turned it off after 20 minutes. Too much of a procedural and I have never lasted a whole season of a Dick Wolf shows. I knew fairly quickly it wasn't a show for me.

New Amsterdam- I liked it. It's a different kind of hospital show. More uplifting and not that much drama. This is more about the problems of the hospital system and maybe ways to fix it. Alot of characters and departments. I liked House and ER, and I currently also watch good doctor. I usually like medical shows that focus more on the medical part of it than then character drama. Hopefully this will be more about the function of a hospital and medicine itself than the characters own drama.

Lethal Weapon- put this in because of the cast change. I was mad they made the cast switch but the first episode made a good bridge to the new lead actor. They kept the same feel to the show but didn't simply replace the Riggs character with someone extremely similar. Will be interesting to see the new dynamic.

Agree with you about Manifest. Also looking forward to Single Parents.

Binged the first few episodes of Jack Ryan last night. The first episode starts out a bit slow and doesn't really hook you in early, but it picks up considerably by the end. It's been pretty smooth sailing since. The story is a bit ridiculous, but the show in general reminds me of a higher-budget, slightly less ridiculous 24. Of course, Jim Halpert is no Jack Bauer, but who is?
