Kaplan named senior vice president for development

Experienced Ohio State leader tapped to lead fundraising efforts

The Ohio State University has named long-time Ohio State leader Jeff Kaplan as its new chief fundraiser, filling a void left by the unexpected death of Senior Vice President of University Development Andrew A. Sorensen earlier this month.

“Jeff is among my most capable, creative, and trusted colleagues, and I am deeply grateful to him for agreeing to lead Ohio State’s development and advancement work,” said President E. Gordon Gee. “In assuming this new role, I know that he will continue to build upon the efforts begun by Andy Sorensen without any loss of momentum. Jeff is exactly the right person for the position at this time.”

Kaplan has served in several leadership roles at Ohio State, most recently as senior vice president for administration and planning. In that capacity, he oversaw a team of some 3,500 people in the departments of facilities operations and development, public safety, trademark and licensing, and business advancement, among others. He also oversaw the first comprehensive master planning for the university.

In his new role as senior vice president of University Development, Kaplan will lead Ohio State’s fundraising efforts, including the upcoming major university-wide fundraising campaign. He also will serve as president of The Ohio State University Foundation and special assistant to the president for advancement, which involves the alignment of the university’s communications, alumni and development functions. Kaplan will continue to serve as special assistant to the president in a variety of other areas, including medicine and athletics.

Kaplan, who earned his bachelor’s degree at Yale and his law degree from Ohio State, has strong leadership and administrative experience in both higher education and health care. He began his career at Ohio State in the 1970s working in athletics, admissions and business administration. He returned to Ohio State in 2007, serving as vice president for business development and collaborative advancement at Ohio State’s academic Medical Center and as interim vice president for University Development.

Prior to returning Ohio State, Kaplan served for seven years as associate vice chancellor and chief administrative officer at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He also held various senior posts at Saint Thomas Health Services and Baptist Hospital in Nashville; Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital Foundation, Columbus; and US Health Corporation and Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. He also was director of admissions and assistant to the president at the University of Vermont.

Pittman, Dunn and Spence have all said they will remain committed. Nothing from Schutt yet.

Noah Spence will also stay committed to #OhioState.

I have a text message into Tommy Schutt. Last one of the recent commits the Scout.com team has to confirm.

Thats good. Maybe add 1 or 2 more OLineman and call it a class. A few less schollies means they have to be judicious with how many they give out.

That's great news. Even if we lose Schutt it's a minor blow if we still have Pittman and Spence and keep Dunn as well.

Wow they came down hard on tressel. Not only will he not be aloud to coach for 5 years but if he does c

Yes. That was before sanctions came down. Can't do that again for a while.

Nonsense. I'd like to see them try and stop someone no longer under their reign.

Statement from Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer:

“I agreed to become the Head Football Coach at The Ohio State University because Shelley and I are Ohio natives, I am a graduate of this wonderful institution and served in this program under a great coach. I understand the academic and athletic traditions here and will give great effort to continue those traditions.

“It is still my goal to hire excellent coaches, recruit great student-athletes who want to be a part of this program and to win on and off the field. The NCAA penalties will serve as a reminder that the college experience does not include the behavior that led to these penalties. I expect all of us to work hard to teach and develop young student-athletes to grow responsibly and to become productive citizens in their communities upon graduation.”

We are going undefeated next year - book it.

Well, basically means he can't coach again, and is banned from and contact with OSU for sometime.

I thought he was retiring in a few years anyways. The guy is set for life on money. I do still view him as a great coach and a great person, damn anyone who disagrees with me, so I wish he wasn't banned from contact with OSU or whatever.

Wow they came down hard on tressel. Not only will he not be aloud to coach for 5 years but if he does cOach again he has to Serve a 5 game suspension. Also, all of the Players stats will be wiped out from the record books from their time at Ohio state. Not that that matters. The hooligans will have this bob booster guy from Ohio state on at 430

Actually really disagree with this. You can have all the outside guys you want, but you need those bangers on the inside of the trenches.
