Patrick McCaw

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
There's literally no chance they're going to take our 1st round pick away. We have plenty of things to say that makes this look not-so-sketchy. Was it sketchy? Obviously, we all know what the intent was.

But like the old saying goes -- It's not what's true, it's what you can prove in court.

I don't see them having any circumstantial evidence to even remotely get close to forcing us to surrender our pick.

If we have to send out any compensation to the Warriors, we should go back and study every move the Warriors have ever made and ensure that the NBA fully investigates those as well. I bet they would find a bunch of wink/wink type deals on their current roster.
If we do get punished we won't be sending compensation to the warriors. It's will be the league taking it away. The picks will be like we didn't exist and the fines will go into some league wide pool.
Whether or not GS were to get the rights to yet another superstar at our expense, the loss of a high pick on our end over this is akin to execution for jaywalking.

Why on earth would the Cavs get punished?
We need bodies. We have G league players in the rotation and just signed Cameron Payne.
We gave this cat McCaw a chance and he was horrible tbh. I'm sure they were hoping he would be some kind of diamond in the rough. Cavs played within the rules and cut him by the required date since he obviously wasn't better than G the league guys. Even Payne came in and played better.
GS had 6 months to work something out with McCaw if they really wanted him back.

Id be real surprised if anyone involve admits anything to the NBA. If Mccaw's agent admits anything and we lose our pick, he might as well change careers. Gilbert would make his life hell.

As reference biggest punishment for tampering was the Lakers being fined 500k for talking to Paul George's agent. To jump from that to loosing a 1st round pick would be crazy. Gilbert will eat a multi-million dollar fine before it comes to that.

If this was a favor to an agent and he says something to the league, Gilbert doesn't need to make his life hell, every team in the league wouldn't trust him and his life would be hell without Cavs intervention.

This looks much weirder than it is because the non-guaranteed contract was signed just days before they cut him. However, that isn't something that can be done all the time. A guy would have to be on ateam for 4 months to pull this kind of stunt regularly. This is the danger of not signing your RFA to the qualifying offer or paying them more before the season starts.

It's so stupid to complain about McCaw getting cut. I would have liked to see him in a longer stint, but 3 games was all the team had to make a decision. Payne was the bigger need because of injury, and quite frankly this team needs another pg and guy with a better handle.

McCaw might have better upside than Payne, but we are rife with SG sized guys who just need to break out.

Anyway, the team that got KD to sign for less than the max, and then resign for less than the max, and gets discounts on players on the reg should keep their mouths shut.

I think the league will look into it because the Warrior front office has complained. It will be hard to prove anything unless someone if going to be dumb enough to leave any trails. I dont think any action will be taken against the Cavs as nothing will be proved.

Also if they don't complain about it, then the rules might not change. I think this is more about getting the rules to change so any RFA offer sheet has to include a guaranteed first year. Teams complained about Z getting traded, bought out, and rejoining the cavs, that got the rules to change.

Teams don't want to lose RFAs in this manner. It basically makes RFA useless if teams are willing to circumvent the design of offer sheets and the restrictions involved with it. I actually always thought you needed to offer RFAs 2+1 contracts at minimum for an offer sheet because you never saw anything less than that.

I sort of agree with you, but it is hard route for the RFA to go. It would never happen with a really good player because the team would not want an option on a RFA that they covet. The RFA doesn't want to wait until January to become a UFA. Usually they would rather have the qualifying offer, which even in this case, McCaw would have made more money with. This is a very unusual circumstance because normally neither the team offering the contract or the player would agree to a non-guarantee.

I do agree that the league might benefit from closing this loophole in the way it has from the old poison pill contracts Morey was handing out that really ruined those contracts as expirings and made them completely toxic in league.

But realistically, this is not a way that players are going to routinely escape from RFA because you basically have to hate your team, and take a huge gamble on yourself as a scrub player, which most guys won't do.

McCaw is really pretty dumb with the way he handled this. I get he wants more playing time, but he probably would have been better off taking the qualifying offer unless someone else picks him up. Maybe he is in contract talks now and is super happy, but those 3 games with the Cavs didn't help him one iota.

The problem with Mccaw is that even if he took the QO he was looking at RFA next summer too. I agree it's a extremely rare circumstances. I do think if a team is going to take a player away from another team though, you need to at least guarantee him that first year.

Also with a non guaranteed contract like Mccaw, a team doesn't have to wait to January to waive him and make him a UFA, that could happen at any point after the old team declines the offer sheet till January. Teams could give non-guaranteed max contracts in the first year to role players then waive them in the summer before they even play a game to resign them for a normal amount.

Oh I see. He had that weird Delly 2 year RFA contract. That should also be done away with. That isn't fair.

I think you are right that the RFA contract should be somewhat guaranteed. I can't believe the NBA office approved the deal, and I can't believe it has never come up before.

However, if you signed a scrub to a max contract for half a year, you have to pay him that for half a year, and that would never fly. It also isn't what happened here. A scrub was signed to a small contract and they didn't match it and then the Cavs waived him because he sucked. lol

Warriors should have just signed him if they wanted him so bad... I hope the rest of the league realizes how big of a bitch that entire team is. How the tattletale, fake bully, nerd, bitches be looked at as one of the best teams of all time (with the dudes from the 90s sucking them off every time they commentate nationally) is beyond me. If LeBron was doing this shit, the media would be like "shut up and dribble" and call him petty.

I think you are getting mixed up with how a non-guaranteed contract works. They only get paid for the regular season time they are with the club. If a team signed Mccaw to this contract in the summer, they could cut him a couple days later which he wouldn't get paid anything then resign him as a UFA to a much smaller contract once he clears waivers. The January deadline is the last day they can be cut, after that the rest of their contract for the season is guaranteed, it has no bearing on how much or little they can be paid before that. A whole bunch of undrafted free agents and G-league players get signed to non-guaranteed contracts and get cut in the summer then get nothing but whatever signing bonus they got when they initially signed.

I thought there was waiting period on signing and cutting a guy. Why have we never seen this situation before?
