He cannot do any worse though honestly than anyone else we have had choosing head coaches, if anything his presence in Cleveland may allow us to get a head coach that isn't an unproven rookie like we have been hiring.

Shoot I think most of us on this board could have been better than who we have had picking the coaches.

Be honest with yourself. Jackson was the sought after coach when they hired him. He was the number one candidate. It didn’t work out. The only thing is he should have been fired earlier.

Arians is number one candidate.

Do I think it happens? no. I think Dorsey wants to have a Andy Reid/Green Bay like offense and Arians background doesn't match that.

However...He is probably track record wise? One of the best "mentor" coaches I've seen for QB's in the NFL.

I keep remembering the 2002 season and how a guy he specifically liked in Kelly Holcomb...wound up helping us out quite a bit.

My fear/criticism...IIRC....he didn't really emphasize the offensive line at Pittsburgh. I recall Yinzers bitching him out over that.

Arians produces with his QBs. He also runs an offense with a ton of 7-step drops and his QBs get beat-up doing that. That's the only drawback of Arians, outside of his age.

I agree, I also like the fact that we letting the GM who we trust to pick players, help pick the coach who will coach those players. It will be nice to have a FO and Coach on the same page.

Which would be another argument for Mike McCarthy in the event he's considered.

I know he's not a popular choice, but he's being pretty underrated here IMO.

I still struggle to understand why people hate McCarthy? I get he only has won one Super Bowl with Rodgers, but damn, those teams kind of sucked.

I watch a lot of football, but admittedly, not as much as some of you guys. But McCarthy has made the playoffs every year with Rodgers except for one, has had some pretty mediocre rosters, and seems to have wide-respect from former players.

I get that McCarthy is more old school, I get that he is not the sexy choice, but, maybe the correct choice is a stable coach who has a good relationship Dorsey and assembles an innovative staff.

He gets tagged for having the most talented player in the world, and I don't think he's among the greats in this league. But you can do a lot worse than Mike McCarthy if and when you surround him with talented players.

I wouldn't dislike it at all.

Does McCarthy have Dorsey ties?

Oh yeah.

More than 10 years they were together in Green Bay. I’m sure they’re well familiarized with one another.

I feel like we aren’t in a bad situation for this coaching search: the floor is Arians who pretty much said he would coach here.
So we hunt and try to do better, and all else fails get Bruce along w someone he can groom for a couple years.

Would love either Arians or Big Mike.
I don’t want a up and comer. We need an experienced guy with a track record with some success.
Big Mike IMO is our best option. He checks all the boxes we have.

Arians w the Iowa state coach as whatever coordinator he wants to be, with the understanding he will take the reins in the next 2 years.

Old coach mentoring Matt Campbell as assistant HC makes some sense as one of the options. I don't see Campbell as NFL head coaching material this year, but if he sees the pro game as his future that would be a realistic way to do it. I hope that means Campbell focuses on defense.

Of course that is just a notch below Dave Taub as least exciting.

I guess I just do not know if someone that is or can become a great is available. If not, I'd rather go with someone stable who can mentor a few younger coordinators.

If they can go get Flip to agree to come here, I'm all for it. Maybe Pete Carmichael should get his chance, I think that's a reasonable hire as well.

But Mike McCarthy is inherently familiar with this front office and how to win with good talent.

Aaron Rodgers doesn't become great without coaching, that is not how development works. So I'm less inclined to believe Mike McCarthy is the burden on GB that people say he is.

Installing him, and bringing in younger, innovative coordinators is a pretty good choice for this team as currently constructed.

How realistic of a scenario is this though? He had a chance to hiring a new defensive coordinator this year and went with Pettine. I just don't know what innovative coaches he would bring on here if GB let him go.
