One of my cousins met Bruce Arians at a Brooklyn Water Bagel down in Ft Lauderdale about 7-8 years ago while they were both on vacation. My cousin was college age at the time and had been walking a couple dogs for one of his friends down there and he briefly had the dogs tied to a chair outside while he went inside to buy bagels for him and some friends. The dogs were certified AKC Ibizans and were worth thousands of dollars per dog.

A hobo came up off the beach and had untied one of the dogs from the chair. Bruce was sitting outside on the porch and saw the whole thing happening. He confronted the guy and when the guy started to sprint away, Bruce took his own dog’s leash (Bruce has dogs of his own, big Lab guy) and tripped the guy up. Guy ran off and ultimately saved my cousin’s ass.

He and my cousin sat down and talked for 20-30 minutes afterwards and he said Bruce was a super nice guy. Very humble and very positive about Cleveland.

Well, we know he's got Swagger's seal of approval then. GET OFF YOUR HANDS FERRY!

Even his own players and ex-players don't respect McCarthy's play-calling and game-planning. Some Greg Jennings quotes from that:

"Even when I was there we would get frustrated with the playcalling"

"There's no innovation"

We're right at the moneyball moment in baseball or the start of the pace and space era in the NBA, I'd rather not hire a guy who believes in an antiquated offense.

I like Arians and I’d be happy if he was our coach but I don’t think his 7 step drop system is ideal for baker. I’m sure baker could work in it but he needs more play action and roll outs.

That's been my main critique.

Baker needs a (MODERN) version of a Bill Walsh "West Coast" offense which would cater towards what is being described.

And it kills me because again...I like Arians and he fits in every way with the exception of that point.

For those clamoring for Riley: isn’t there at least s slight concern about his defenses? I mean I get no one in the conference plays it, but I don’t really care. You’re not outscoring your schedule in this league and even with the termination of his DC this season things don’t look much better.

As long as he hires a strong DC he should be fine. Follow mcvays path. Hire a great DC preferable with HCing experience so they can run that end of the game. Gregggg might be decent enough.

There’s no way you bring back Greggggg, now that he’s interim head coach and he wants another hc gig.

For me, the single most important thing we should look for in a coach is openness to new ideas and willingness to change. The reason being, the league is beginning to change very quickly as analytics are opening everyone's eyes to the inefficiencies of classical football (jumbo sets, running Vs passing, punting the ball, etc etc). I believe that the NFL we see 3 years down the line will look a lot different than the NFL we see today, and I want a coach that can grow himself and the team into the future of NFL play.

I'd also love an offensive genius, but it has to come with the adaptability. Chip Kelly was absolutely an offensive savant, but his bullheaded refusal to update his playbook once NFL teams made their adjustments ultimately doomed his NFL career.
