Potential Playoff Roster

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Almost never disagree with any of Francona's decisions, but I am baffled. This is awful. Just imagine a Sonny Gray-Tomlin pitching matchup at 2-1 or 1-2 with the season pretty much on the line. Wow.

No. 1. Terrible decision

No. 2. It’s Salazar’s spot to lose IMO. They’re gonna give him every opportunity to be the guy to start in the playoffs.

They don't trust Clevinger (12th lowest ERA in the entire AL since the All-Star break min 40 IP) to make a start. Meanwhile they probably don't even trust Salazar to eat his vegetables based on how they've handled him. He's not making this roster, this solidifies it to me.

I'd prefer Clevinger, as I'm sure most would, but Tomlin has been very solid since returning from the DL.

I'd much prefer Tomlin over Salazar, from what we have seen of him recently

Clevinger is already at 152 IP. His career high is 158, all at AA 2 years ago. Last year, he was at 151 between the minors and majors, postseason included. Given all that, plus his walk rate is still so high, I can see not completely trusting him, especially if his 1st start is a road start in a game 4.

I hope this means we go with a 3 man rotation, though.

Looks like SportsCoach was right all along, as it appears Tito simply trusts Tomlin in that situation more than Clevinger despite the statistics. Clevinger's walks issues make him a peculiar fit in the pen, and his ERA are FIP are superior to Tomlin's numbers. I can't imagine the Tribe's front office is completely on board with this move, but Tito is the best in the business for a reason.

What the F...that is a ridiculous choice by Francona...Unless they don't need 4 starters for the ALDS

Nope, Zack Meisel of The Athletic confirmed that they will go with four starters for the ALDS. Get ready for Tomlin to toe the rubber for Game 4 against the Yankees if necessary.

why not go with Clevenger...makes no sense...if Clevenger struggles pull him early...Tomlin has pitched alright as of late but he's only a 5 inning guy at best right now...lets hope the Indians can pull off a sweep so it doesn't get to a game 4

You guys were right about Tomlin.

My only issue was that you guys used nothing to back up any of your takes, yet wondered why others disagreed with you strongly lol. That being said, it still makes no sense to me, and while I hope Tomlin does well, I fear that game 4 scenario if he's matching up against Sonny Grey. I understood what you guys meant that Tito may trust him, but I never imagined it was even realistic with how Clev's pitched. On top of that, I don't even think they've let Tomlin go beyond 80 pitches yet in a single start.

I also don't buy into this idea of using Clevinger as a "weapon" out of the bullpen. Do they plan on using him for when Tomlin doesn't go far in games? or Bauer? Bauer's been solid lately and gone deep, and they've trusted him to go 115+ pitches lately. That limits this "weapon" thing with Clevinger to solely games with Tomlin. That's what like 10-20% of the playoff games? And then you're going to give a guy that you clearly don't fully trust a shot at pitching out of the pen in favor of guys like Goody, Otero, or McAllister who have done it tremendously well all year? I think the whole idea of using Clev as a "weapon" out of the pen is a farce to get people off of the idea of picking Tomlin over him. They somewhat did the same thing with Salazar last year in the World Series and all it got him was two appearances in games pretty much already decided (one of which when Tomlin got completely shelled in Game 6 and gave the Cubs even more momentum).

Pretty sure both of them said they themselves favored Clevinger over Tomlin, but ultimately thought Tito would go with Tomlin because Tito likes and trusts Tomlin.

Isn't that exactly what happened?

Kluber will pitch Game 4 if we are down

I don't even know, I didn't actually follow all of the posts, but do know I disagreed with Tomlin over Clev lol.

And I think Meisel tweeted that they're going with a 4-man, with the last spot up for grabs between Salazar and Tomlin. As if that's actually not decided already.

I'm telling you guys, there's still a legit chance that Salazar starts and not Tomlin.

His next start on Tuesday/Wednesday is going to be really be the sign. If he is able to give them 80 pain free and competent pitches, I think they'll ramp him up even further in a sim game on 10/1 or 10/2 and get him in line to start on 10/9.

I actually said Clev should start and Tomlin out of the bullpen but both me and Ed thought cause of who Francona is that we have Tomlin in the starting rotation

Francona hasn't been pitching Tomlin when it comes to the third time around in the order since he has a tendency to get hit around with the third time through (I think it's like a career .300+ batting average for hitters against Tomlin the third time through). He has been doing 75ish pitchers through 5ish innings. Tomlin can easily pitch longer into games, but I think Francona has officially learn how to use Tomlin the right way. (Hence why I feel he or Salazar will end up in the pen next season while Clev is full time starter)

Going from a 50 pitch appearance to an 80 pitch appearance to a simulated game to starting in the ALDS....

Maybe if it was Corey Kluber that'd make sense.
