Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Love the Star Wars movies and into it and all. But Rogue One is basically the best flying people? Kinda like the "Top Gun" of the Navy? Want a little knowledge of it before I go see it this weekend but don't want to look up any spoilers.
In the old Expanded Universe, Wedge Antilles started a fleet of the best pilots in the New Republic called "Rogue Squadron". But that is no longer canon and has nothing to do with this movie.

Seeing a lot of 10/10's here.. I respect you guys' opinion.. I'm getting hyped.. Seeing it tonight.

Rogue (one) is just the call sign of the rebel ship that stole the death star plans. No spoiler here since that is shown in the trailers.

No...haha...that has absolutely nothing to do with the movie.

I will write more tomorrow (maybe Sunday)...

I really didn't like The Force Awakens.. I think most people here know that. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and TFA was just.. an abomination.. If you sat me down totally unaware, I'd be able to tell you in 10 minutes that JJ Abrams directed this movie and to please let me go..

So with that said.... Rogue One is not The Force Awakens.

Rogue One is genuinely one of the best films I've seen in quite some time.

The movie is flawed, surely. The musical score is, well, terrible. But this film is a MUST SEE. It's really THAT good.. The characters are stoic, yes, but the action and story make up for it. The movie is heavy on plot and weak on development, but the scale of the film make this sacrifice acceptable.

If you see one movie this winter, this would be the one to see...

Rogue One 9/10... Best Star Wars movie since... Return of the Jedi (making it 4th).

Arrival- 6.573/10.000

Good overall but I saw the two twists coming. An early comment gave away the origin of the aliens and then further comments gave away the truth about her daughter. Good acting, though, and it was worth the ticket... I like it the more I think about it but the 'mechanism' for her communication skills just seemed bizarre.
struck me a inspired by Slaughterhouse Five, with her bouncing from one part of her timeline to another randomly, just going along because She knows she can't change it. And I guess I just don't get how her ability to travel her timeline came about solely because she began to understand the Squidwards' language. Not to mention that the Squidwards purpose for the trip was to pass on the tool because years layer they would need help... Well that's changing a timeline, isn't it? Movie made me think though.

Battle for Sevastopol- 6.013/10.000

Terribly named movie, it is about WWII Soviet sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko, who had over 300 kills and is one of the most successful snipers in history. Movie was sponsored by our new BFFs, the Russian government.

The good:
They humanize the title character very well, she was dubbed Lady Death both because of her prowess and demeanor. The goal of the director supposedly was to show the toll that the war took on Soviet Russia's women and I think they did that.

The bad:
They picked a waifish model to play a well built Ukrainian woman. They built the story around 3 love interests, which seems kind of sexist for the story of a 'successful' woman. They toyed with her story, making her seem reluctant to enter service when the truth was that she was an accomplished shooter from a very young age and fought to be added to the war effort. It struck me as an over the top effort to 'feminize' her, basically saying at one point that she only fought because 'the men failed to protect her.' Also They flubbed her big US press tour mic drop moment- you can find the original on YouTube, the movie didn't do this justice.

Overall it was worth the watch. Introduced me to someone I had not heard before. Also gives at least some perspective on the Russian war experience.

FYI; she can change the future and the past, everyone can... that's the whole point.

To understand the alien's language, one begins to think in their language. This means one begins to perceive reality the way they perceive reality. In this case, such perception leads, invariably, to perceiving time bidirectionally/spatially. This is explained a few times in the film through exposition.

She changes the future several times in the film in order to actually effect the end result of the movie; i.e., having the Chinese General give her his phone number and his wife's dying last words so that she would know them in the past and then stand-down as a result.

This is why her husband will ultimately leave her; because she knew their daughter would die of an incurable illness that she could not find a way to prevent even given her ability to jump through time. She decided to have the child anyway, to get married to this particular man anyway, without telling her husband what would happen - knowing how he would feel about it, knowing he would leave her.

Couple of horror/thriller reviews:

The Invitation (9/10)

Really enjoyed this. The vast majority of the movie takes place at a dinner party. A guy (Will) and his girl go to this party hosted by his ex-wife and her new man. The invite comes out of the blue and it appears that it's the first time Will, his ex, and all of their mutual friends have hung out in a couple of years.

There are a couple of lingering issues that are addressed, and it comes down to Will being paranoid about the vibe of the party... locked doors, late guests, etc... Is Will overthinking it, or is there more going on that no one is catching on to? More to it than that, but I don't want to spoil any plot points.

Watched this on your suggestion.

I enjoyed it.

I did have some problems with it, namely that the flashbacks never came to any resolution or explained exactly what happened. They were very confusing and served as more of a distraction than a tool to advance the plot.

Other than that, I thought it was a very solid thriller. John Carroll Lynch was cold af as he has been in everything he turns up in. He's always a treat and you can count on some depth/creepiness to any character he plays, no exception here.

Sigh....

Really respect your opinion on films... And I know @The Oi and I have similar taste in horror flicks...

So now I have to watch this...

God dammit..

Really? You can spoiler tag if it's warranted, but what did you find distracting/unresolved about the flashbacks? Thought they did a good job at adding color to Will's mind state and giving the film a brief break from the ongoing tension in the contained location.

Apparently the son was killed by other kid after they were playing and he got hit with the baseball bat. They didn't show the hit per se, but I thought they included enough to paint the picture.

Absolutely agree on JCL. So great that his character's name is Pruitt too. Such a perfect name for him.

Shit...did they say that's what happened specifically? :chuckle:

Guess that's on me. My problem with the flashbacks was that I thought they never said what exactly happened. If they said what happened and I just didn't catch it, then fuck me...

Haha, well maybe not completely, but enough to infer. They show the party, then the kids playing, and the other kid grabbing the bat. Eden and Will go rushing in among the kids and Eden kneels down to pick the son up.

Later Will confesses that he should have been paying better attention. I think the quote was "I should have been watching him. He loved that boy. They played with each other all the time." or something like that.
