Kong: Skull Island

8/10

I thought it was pretty solid. It's not going to win any Academy awards, but it definitely kept me entertained. I thought Kong looked pretty good, all the creatures did for that matter. Big fan of Brie Larson

I know it's setting up for Godzilla vs Kong, but it's not going to stop there. I stayed for the post credit scene, looks like we are going to see Mothra, King Ghidorah and Rodan in the near future as well.

Reminds me of Monster Movie Saturdays on the WUAB as a kid- looking forward to it.

Excited for this, sure hope it's good. Some book-lovers are concerned with the loss of the original director and the jumpscares, but I feel like it could manage to be a solid adaptation while also being a horror film. I'm a little more into the look of the new Pennywise now that it isn't a still image screaming LOOK HOW EDGY AND DARK I AM.

I just hope they include all of his manifestations and not just the clown.

I hated the fucking spider. I thought it was so lame. Or at least if it's there, make it look scary.

I was impressed with the trailer.

I'm actually re-reading the book right now for the first time since I originally read it in 4th grade. It truly is terrifying and an incredibly well written book. Really depressing. Pennywise/It is one hateful motherfucker.

I, like you guys, need this movie to be great. The book, rather than the movie, was a part of my childhood. I know how asinine that sounds because no kid should have read that book, but certain parts of the movie they got (camraderie of the Losers Club, Tim Curry as Pennywise) and they just missed on a lot of other stuff.

Watched "Spotlight" yesterday. It was pretty good but not great. I was expecting "All the King's Men" and didn't get quite that level.

It does make all of the first communion pictures I see on FB much weirder though.

Watching that movie combined with a teacher at her Catholic HS committing suicide after accusations of coverups and then the local diocese getting busted for coverups and payoffs all in a very short period of time resulted in my wife leaving the Catholic church. She went to church one last time to see what the pastor would say about the coverups and hasn't gone back since. She said he really didn't apologize at all for what happened and pretty much droned on about how it didn't happen in their specific church, God is forgiving, blah blah blah.

She went back and had a long conversation with him about it too explaining her thoughts and why she was leaving rather than just disappearing.

I have a lot of respect for her decision, particularly because I always disliked Catholicism. Always felt like it was more about the church than God and spirituality.

We actually haven't been to ANY church consistently since then, which I kind of feel bad about since church was such a big part of her life but that has more to do with the fact that our son is a disaster whenever we go.

Hopefully we'll go back.

Back on topic, I'm rereading It again. It really is one of the best books I've ever read. I see no reason why they can't have brief scenes of the bird, the swamp thing etc.

Watched Hidden Figures today, it was really good. My first job after college as as NASA/Langley in Hampton where the movie takes place.

I said back when the movie came out.

Do you remember the scene where Rachel McAdams is at the pub/sports bar with one of the victims? It was right after 9/11 and the victim thought that the abuse story was going to get buried.

On the TVs behind them, there was a college football game. It was a Penn State game, and they showed Joe Paterno. No way that's just a coincidence.

Has anyone seen Scorsese's Silence? I have just about 25 minutes left (had to leave for work) but I am pretty impressed with the film up to this point. It's definitely not for everyone but all the reviews i had read said it's good but a bit of a chore to get through, which I don't agree with. It's unlike any film i've watched so i was just curious about other's thoughts on it.

Garfield turns in a better performance in it than he did in Hacksaw, IMO.
