So I just watched The Quiet Place and it reminds me of a certain video game...

Isn't everything in the movie a dead ringer for The Last of Us? From scavenging in deserted grocery stores to the monsters basically being dead ringers for Clickers, the entire world could have been straight out of the game.
Dude I thought the exact same thing in the theatre. Made me want to go home and play haha

But I loved the game and also loved the movie

In a genre that is made up of mostly retreads or lightly masked different movies with generally the same plot line, A Quiet Place was a fresh new idea. There were some things I didn’t like about it, but overall it was a very good and entertaining movie. I’d slot it at 8.5 with the extra half point for creativity in a genre that needs all of it it can get

A Quiet Place

I dunno what I'd rate it yet but I thought it was phenomenal. Everything down to the ominous soundtrack, which seemed to embody pure terror, had me on the edge of my seat. Don't really want to say anything at all because it's probably best to go in absolutely fresh as I did. Might be my favorite horror movie since The Descent. Not saying a lot since the genre has become a joke full of nothing but blood, guts, and torture porn shit these days, but this film is good. No doubt about it.

Did have one kinda-complaint

The abrupt gung-ho "Come get some!" style ending kind of contrasted with the rest of the movie, but that may have been intentional. They spend the whole film in hiding, and being hunted with no chance, maybe it was supposed to signify the tables had turned. Either way, it felt weird, won't say I hated it though.
Ha. My lady said same EXACT thing you did in your spoiler.

I dunno.. I was a bit meh on A Quiet Place.. didn't seem all that interesting after a time. The beginning of the film was jarring and exciting but that feeling rapidly diminishes. The entire plot seemed contrived, and the continued separation of this family over the course of the night seemed contrived.

What's more, the child running away seemed absurd; particularly given the seriousness of the situation. The parents seemed oblivious to their children's needs and concerns. And their solution to using newspaper to soundproof a room with a mattress also seems absurd... why not just use foam insulation from the hardware store .. or from the attic of any number of abandoned houses? Why not dig a hole and get in it?

Having a baby in this situation seems ... remarkable stupid. These two might be the worst parents in the history of mankind, and what's odd is that they acknowledge how fucking bad they are as parents -- so (1) why do you knock up your wife immediately after your infant son is brutally eaten alive; (2) why not terminate the the pregnancy??? They put their other two living children at risk, and their own lives as well, to selfishly have another child? It seemed beyond stupid and irresponsible.

So, the situation they found themselves in was of their own design.

I simply couldn't understand why over the course of the past year they hadn't scouted out a mine shaft or actually soundproofed the cellar beyond pulling a fucking mattress over the top.

Honestly, I think this movie works in a theater, but when you sit back and really think about what's going on, there's just a lot of ridiculous things happening. Why is this pregnant woman, who is a 1-2 weeks away from giving birth being left alone until the middle of the night with no way to contact her husband --- and then, fucking around climbing stairs and doing laundry? Why is their adolescent daughter left to her own devices to run about outside and in her room, alone, as if she might not accidentally drop something and make a noise getting everyone killed.....

It's been 497 days and this family has normalized this situation beyond what is reasonable, to the point of complacency, stupidity, and frankly criminal neglect.

Lastly, the third act is just stupid. The signalling to the audience that the daughter's hearing aid is the key to destroying the creatures is revealed very early, but then is done again and no one questions how the kids survived the attack. And the father's death.. It made no sense.. He died for no reason, he was impaled for no reason, he wasn't making a sound. It was as if this creature could see him, thus impaling him and setting that course of events into motion.

And how can these creatures not hear people breathing? Or their hearts beating?

Why don't they fucking have carpet?

.... It's just... there's so much going on, this guy is building hearing aids and doing electronic work; he's obviously using shortwave radio; why not build any remote controlled devices that would create loud sounds? Like tying an RC drone motor to a pistol trigger? I mean, if you're going to be tinkering, do something to protect your family ... but saying "hey kid, run out there and launch these fireworks?" C'mon man... That was your grand plan .. after a year that's all you managed to put together?

:chuckle: You're definitely not wrong. I had many questions arise too but just said eff it and ran with it.
Where did that nail come from on the basement steps? Three inch long ass nail just starts poking out in the most vulnerable of places? The entire house floods and no one notices until it's like four feet high in the basement, cascading everywhere? The fireworks solution seems like a child sacrifice more than a well thought out plan.

Why could they not whisper, yet they could do things that were clearly more audible? Why on earth would you have all those framed photos hanging in the hallway in a high traffic area of the house that could easily be knocked down and result in instant death?

Ah well, it was a fun film.

Why did the hearing aid not work right before dad died?

It was fine for what it was. These movies have low ceilings. Interesting enough to watch but I don't for the life of me understand the clapping at my theater upon conclusion and the
"tell her you love her, I always loved you"
piece was contrived.

Exactly.... the problem is that, throughout the movie, you're asking yourself "why?" Why..why..why.. Like, who the fuck let's their barely-not-a-toddler child walk out of their sight while literal monsters from another dimension are lurking within 50 yards.. Who could be so irresponsible? Why even move about as a family in this instance in the first place? They all trekked to the store to get some antibiotics and a few packs of food -- homeboy could have done that by himself without risking and losing his son.

Why aren't they LIVING at the waterfall? Or a mine shaft? Or a deep sub-terranean basement in a building in the heart of the city? Like, there seems to be absolutely no advantage to living out in the woods -- so why not find a large building to barricade and then soundproof a storage room in a second or third level basement? They'd have been safer living in a car atop a parking garage....

Like.. their plan seemed to be more suited to the zombie apocalypse rather than the creatures they were actually fighting...

Also, how did these things defeat the military again? This lady was just gunning them down with a pump shotgun... I get they have armor but.. seriously? How does one of these things deal with an armored vehicle with a .50 cal on it? Or a helicopter? They can't fly... So what gives? Just seems like you could round them up quite easily (they're pretty stupid) and just drop napalm on them or tear them apart with a machine gun....

I dunno... the ending with the shotgun just was such an eyeroll moment. The piercing sound should have killed the creature itself, not the mom blowing it's head off.

I mean, it wasn't perfect. I thought it was really good.

You guys are pretty harsh critics. :chuckle: Nitpick city. Nothing wrong with that, to each their own. But I feel like I can do that with any film to undermine it.

I really liked A Quiet Place, shamelessly ripping off a video game notwithstanding. I didn't think it was scary at all though, I was laughing at some of the moments/situations. But as long as you don't take it too seriously it's a lot of fun.

Yeah, it wasn't scary- I don't think any movie is scary to be honest, but I'm able to appreciate horror movies, or thrillers (whatever you want to call the film) nonetheless. I'm a big The Last of Us fan but I don't think that game has a trademark on monsters that rely on sound. :chuckle: If we're going by that, every movie/game/book is a ripoff of something else these days.

See Gouri? This is why we like your posts - you put what we think in a very eloquent manner and infact you have many more thoughts on the same spectrum that we never even think off.

Den of Thieves - This movie is basically Heat, except it sucks. Also, the twist at the end is laughably bad.

TV thread got me thinking about early movie exposure in regards to action and violence.

Trying to think here...I know I saw Star Wars or else how the hell did I know what was going on in Empire? That was '77, so I would have been 3. There weren't vhs/beta tapes released yet, so it had to be the theater. That might be the first movie I saw in a theater. I remember seeing The Swarm at a drive-in in '78. I saw Alien in '79, so I was 5 for that. WTF dad?

I guess the parents stopped giving a shit because I remember things like renting Animal House for me for my 5th grade birthday party. I'm not sure my mom was fully aware...or the other parents.

Sounds like you have a rad dad.
