Yep. Pretty much everything about those movies was awesome. It’s been a long time since I saw a movie that made me laugh as much as those movies.

I just watched two movies on airplane listed as comedies, one took 40 minutes to get to the first laugh, the other took 20. And between the two there were maybe half a dozen laughs total. Not one as funny as the two clips I posted.

A Quiet Place - 7/10

This was a weird one. On the one hand, I think it's a very well-directed, tense horror film that was a really easy watch. On the other hand, I thought the ending was godawful and the weakness of the aliens was ridiculously stupid.

I was prepared to give it an 8/10 before the ending, but man...it was just bad. It felt like it was lifted from another, far cheesier movie, especially since the film is bleak as hell basically every other minute.

And now, some spoiler thoughts...

Like the entire might of the US army couldn't figure out that loud noises was the key to victory? The aliens in general just seemed pretty weak. It feels like they'd be incredibly easy to bait and any halfway decent military could likely pick them apart in a matter of weeks.

Also thought Jim went out like a bitch.

Yeah, if a shotgun can kill these things, and they run towards any noise, they would be ridiculously easy to trap and kill. That's probably why there was no explanation in the beginning about how the current situation came to be, because they couldn't come up with one that made sense.

I really thought they made a mistake by having the movie end the way it did. If any movie needed a bleak ending, it was A Quiet Place. Instead, we got this cheesy as hell shotgun cock that felt like it was lifted from an Evil Dead film. It needed an ending like the game The Last of Us, a game it obviously took some serious inspiration from.

Thought that was the weakest part of the film as well, I think I touched on it in my initial thoughts. I didn't let it drag the film down though. I enjoyed it immensely.

Probably could have added a bit more exposition/explanation for how these aliens were able to defeat the world military powers and shit, too, but at the end of the day it's a piece of fiction and if you try hard enough you'll find holes in just about anything.

the loud noice attracted them but the girls hearing aid put out a specific frequency that made them going crazy. The reason she was able to kill it with a shotgun was it's protective layer of it's face was spasming outward. The dad was putting together broken hearing aids to get her a working one. Basically the hearing aid was a frankenstein so it put out a unique unwanted frequency.

I just watched Love, Simon. I thought it was real good. Good cast and the story was a good play on the high school coming of age. It was a fun movie which I think this genre has left by the way side in recent years. It has a couple of the actors from 13 reasons why so like the movie IT with stranger things, they oddly feel like in the same universe.

Deus ex machina...

I mean, I understood what happened. I just thought it was dumb. And you're telling me that the combined might of the world's various military powers couldn't figure out that you could just blast these things with a high-pitched noise and they'd fucking submit?

I could have been okay with the film building up to them picking off one of the aliens, but the way it happened was just lame and cheesy.

Horror films usually are cheesy in general. Its a reason why I usually steer away from them. This wasn't on the level of Get Out or IT but I still enjoyed it.

I think people are hyping up good movies more now because the lack of good mid-budget and indie movies. The wide range of movies isnt what it was 10 years ago. We now have a bunch of barely watchable Netflix movies and a bunch of comic/superhero movies so when a good movie comes along people hype it as great.

Thing is, I didn't say A Quiet Place was a bad movie or anything. Gave it a 7 out of 10. That's above average. A pretty good but short of great film, and I think that's accurate. It had a lot I liked, mostly the visual style, direction, and sense of constant tension. But I thought the ending was bad and the aliens themselves poorly reasoned.

I think the reasons you knock it might be the same reasons the studio liked it. They already green lite a sequel. It gives them a world that can be explored with prequels or sequels. It basically leaves more to work with than Cloverfield which gave us two other movies that had very little to do with the first and neither had the magic of the first.
It also leave the door open for Emily Blunt to star in a future movie.

Which the daughter didn't figure out until after her dad was killed. As a dad who saw the movie with his daughters, I told them after - If you have the secret answer to save everyone, figure out you have it before I get killed, not after
