Hereditary... 7.0

This was a bit disappointing. Expectations were high, so while there were definitely some really great moments, didn't deliver what the trailer had me believe was promised. Still an upper tier horror flick in this age, just not the classic I was hoping for.

Toni Colette was incredible, as was the the young girl playing Charlie. Felt the son didn't have the acting chops to pull off what he was asked to. Meandering at times when it didn't need to be, and really disappointed that the miniatures that Annie made not only weren't a focal importance of the story, but that they were pretty much irrelevant the overarching plot.

I liked where they were going with the final act and conclusion, but they didn't stick the landing to me. Oh well.

Amazed you didn't like it...

I thought it was absolutely brilliant... 10/10 from me bro..

I agree about the son, thought he was horribly miscast. I don't think the miniatures were irrelevant; they were metaphorical. Everything in the story had been planned out, and the family was being manipulated, since the very beginning, by forces they never understood.

Don't get me wrong, I liked it. There was a lot to like:

The whole scene with the party, the lead up to the accident, the accident, then his reaction to the accident... and then ANNIE'S reaction to the accident was top notch stuff. Amazing. Everything Annie and Charlie was great. Peter getting possessed in class was a highlight as well...his hand arched up like we would eventually see on the statue at the end. Certifiably creepy stuff.

You're right about the miniatures, they were pawns on the board. Irrelevant wasn't the right word, but the trailer had me believing that we were going deeper with those concepts and that we were going to be diving into them rather than just having them there... some potential foreshadowing in the miniatures rather than them just being present.

But the last thirty minutes didn't do it for me. Peter having to carry it made it drag. I didn't buy any of Alex Wolfe's sobbing scenes (whereas Collette knocked them out of the park) and it really took me out of the film. And it went too Babadook for me. SO HARD to avoid cheesiness when you have characters possessed and flying around a room. I should have been scared, not cringing. Not many films have done it right. Annie banging on the ceiling door was awesome, but the scenes around that were a bit lacking in touch. I actually love the idea of the altar/worship/new king finale... but damn man, why didn't they pick someone else to carry that weight. It could have been perfect!

So yeah, it was good. As I said, upper tier horror film. Just irritated that there was potential for damn near perfection and it got squandered.

Alex Wolfe's crying scenes should be edited out, IMHO. They were terrible. I completely agree, it took me out of the film as well.. "mommy.. mommmmyy.." Like, c'mon bruh...

SpaceBalls: 8.116/10

Classic 80s/Mel Brooks humor. I apparently loved this movie as a child, even had the soundtrack for my cassette player. Why the hell did my parents let me watch it?

Glad it isnt just me on Hereditary.

Will say I liked it more after letting it simmer.

Hereditary is pretty fucking wack.

Audible laughter at the crying scenes in my theater.

There is nothing special about this movie. Run of the mill horror movie and the run of the mill horror movie is not good.

Also, is the white people's kid ostensibly Indian or middle eastern?

Edit:eek:knevermind, that last thirty minutes... Woah.

Deadpool 2 - 10/10

I thought it was an improvement over the original in basically every way. It was just as funny, but wasn't constrained by having to tell an hour-long origin story, which meant the sequel just hit the ground running. It was bigger, crazier, expanded the universe, added new characters. It was basically everything you'd want from a Deadpool sequel. It was stupid, fun, ridiculous, over-the-top, and just really fucking enjoyable.

The parachute scene is quite possibly the greatest scene of any superhero movie I've ever seen, too. It was absolutely brilliant.

This is just one of those films where you can tell everyone involved, from the actors to the people behind the scenes, is having a wonderful time, and it shows in the final product. It feels like everyone did their absolute best to make this a great Deadpool movie, and they succeeded.

I also really like that most of the jokes from the trailer were different than the jokes in the film. Easy to do when you can't see the main character's mouth, I know, but I still appreciate it because it meant that watching the actual movie felt fresh, whereas a lot of comedies give away their best gags in trailers these days.

I gave it a perfect score because it perfectly met my expectations for the film. It's not the greatest film ever, or even the greatest superhero film ever, but it's a perfect Deadpool movie, and that's what matters.

The Incredibles 2 is great, make sure you watch the first one and the Jack Jack short that comes with it before watching the new movie. A scene in the middle is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time in a movie.

Loved it as well. Probably more than the 1st one. Jack Jack steals the show in every scene.

First Reformed - 9.5

Fantastic. Film of the year for me so far.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - 3/10

This movie was, impossibly, somehow even dumber than I thought it would be. I'm not sure why they keep trying to overcomplicate these movies with the evil corporation bullshit. Yes, that was present in the original Jurassic Park, but it was a very small part of the film mostly to set up the power in the park going down, which in turn led to the dinosaurs breaking free.

This entire fucking movie is about an evil corporation pulling dinosaurs from the park, which is about to be destroyed by a volcano, so they can auction them off to rich assholes. The entire second half of the film is all about that auction. You'll probably be shocked to find out that things don't go as planned and the dinosaurs get loose and murder everyone. Didn't see that coming.

This is all made even more stupid by the fact that they can literally make more of these dinosaurs whenever they want, so the entire first half of the movie where they go to save them seems pretty stupid. I guess it was all a weak justification to go and find Blue, the raptor from the first film, but I never really bought in to the importance of doing that.

At any rate, I find the whole military subplot laughable. I just can't imagine that these dinosaurs would be that useful in military scenarios, especially since they establish early in the film that a single pistol bullet can take down and basically kill a raptor. I just don't see any scenario where these things wouldn't just get gunned the fuck down in the field. They might do a little damage first, sure, but I just don't really see the cost/benefit being in favor of paying tens of millions of dollars for them like people were doing in the film.

SPOILERS

The film's ending is dumb too. Most of the dinosaurs get free while Jeff Goldblum does a voiceover monologue about how it's a Jurassic World now. But that's just fucking stupid, because there are only a handful of these dinosaurs, and in most cases only one per species, so these things would presumably die off or be killed within a matter of weeks, if not days, especially the carnivores. It's not as if they can find other dinosaurs to breed with, so I really don't see the danger. Some short term danger, sure, but long term? The only one that seems like a long-term threat is the giant swimming asshole from the first movie (don't remember the name and don't feel like googling it).

END SPOILERS

Don't see this movie. Well, if it's free, go for it I guess. It's entertaining enough if you wanna see dinosaurs kill people. But it's dumb as shit.

I could have told you it was dumb just from the previews.

Jurassic Park has been dumb since after the second one. In fact even that one was dumb at the end.
