Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So this was true 5 years ago. Can anyone show that this is still true? There have been several drafts in recent memory where rookie Wide receivers have absolutely taken over.

futhermore, a friend of mine gave an interesting stat (not sure where he got it). Apparently WRs drafted in the 2nd round or later have a bust rate of 75+%, he said it was second only to QBs. He listens to a bunch of podcasts so might have gotten it from one of those, but it would be an interesting thing to keep an eye on

All the guys you’re thinking of didn’t sit out a year of football. Remember Calloway didn’t play last year.

I think one of the most common mistakes -- maybe the most common mistake --fans make when evaluating players/prospects in the NFL and NBA is assuming that raw talent consists solely of athleticism, and that almost everyone has the ability to learn the necessary skills if they possess the athleticism and work ethic. "Just give him more time learning the position and he'll be great!"

I think we also need to take into account that we have probably the worst coaching staff in the NFL, or at least bottom three, so there's probably not a lot of development going on here that isn't self-motivated.

Jesus it's been 6 games - let the kid get used to the NFL. He had an amazing catch in the NO game. He has the talent. Give it at least another full season.

I mean fuck, with his history, he hasn't failed a drug test in 6 games.

That's a damn win right there.

I think we're all well aware that it's been only six games, and that these guys often take years to develop. However, the issue here is that this guy is playing like absolute shit and still is on the field for 90% of the snaps. That's a problem. He's not ready, and he needs to have his role significantly reduced until he starts showing that he is. Good teams don't just dump rookies that aren't ready into the fire. They build them up slowly.

Hell, good teams even do that with guys who are ready. Chris Godwin was pro-ready last year, but Tampa still brought him along slowly early on. Now, in his second year, they've increased his opportunities and he's the team's WR2. Callaway looks nowhere near as ready as Godwin was last year, yet he's getting far more opportunity than Godwin is this year, which makes no sense.

You have to approach it on a case by case basis. Just because one guy is ready to play like a star in his rookie year doesn't mean every guy is. Some guys need to work their way up the rotation. Some guys need to get the mental aspect of the game down. Some guys need to polish their route-running. Some guys need to develop good habits and an NFL body. Expecting every rookie WR to come into the NFL ready to contribute at a high level is unrealistic.

And to answer your question, every single year we see guys break out in their second or third year in the NFL (or even later). This year, we're seeing it with Tyler Boyd, who was a nobody last year but is a top twenty WR in the NFL right now. Same with Tyler Lockett, in his fourth year and on pace for career highs across the board. Albert Wilson looks to be in the midst of his breakout campaign too. We've seen it the past few years with Nelson Agholor, Devin Funchess, Adam Thielen, Davante Adams, and on and on and on.

Outside of OBJ it’s simply just not really that true. I guess Calvin Ridley? He has Julio Jones opposite him so I think I could catch 5 touchdowns in that role.

I don't even think Ridley counts. Yeah, he's had a couple of big games, but his production is clearly unsustainable. He's averaging less than five targets a game, only on pace for about 77 for the season, and he's only on the field for about 60% of the offensive snaps. He's a WR3 who had two big games buoyed by touchdowns. He's not catching multiple touchdown passes every week. He's fool's gold right now.

Here’s the thing to everyone saying give Callaway time

The most important thing for the future of this franchise BY FAR is the development of Baker Mayfield

Now Baker seems like a mentally tough guy, but all those drops and wasted perfect throws might get to him. And if they do even 5%, Callaway can’t be out there

Don’t fuck up mayfield’s development because Callaway is fast (and good at literally nothing else)

Could he become a good WR someday? Sure. Should this be a developmental playground where guys who can’t make a slightly non routine catch gets 6.5 targets a game? Fuck no. Develop in practice. Develop as a WR5, but he’s way too poor of a receiver to play right now, and it could negatively affect Mayfield’s development which is even more important than winning this yeaR

Well, I think when people are saying to give him time, they mean time in practice. He's obviously getting too many in-game reps and he's clearly not ready for them. He's been awful, but I'm not ready to call him a bust after six games. I do think they need to yank his ass off the field if he's going to keep playing like shit, though. No reason to have him out there when this team is trying to win games if he is actively hurting their ability to do so.

I don't really disagree with any of this. My point wasn't that Callaway should be thrown on the trash heap as a failure. I was addressing the more limited point that he has all the "skills" necessary to be successful. We just don't know that yet. I think that when judging "potential", too much emphasis is placed on measurables such as height/40 time, and not enough on hand/eye coordination and intelligence. Hard work isn't always enough even if you're blessed with height and speed.

Seems like we're pretty much on the same page, then.

Let's shitcan Hue and hire a coach who can actually develop guys.

Since more of the coaching that yields development comes from the guys the HC hires. So, I'm good with shitcanning Hue and bringing in a solid HC who can lure solid assistants that are capable of developing talent.

Well, right. I think it goes without saying that this whole coaching staff needs to be terminated.

Watching Baker these past games and watching Rosen a couple times, and these guys aren't even close. Rosen is late on throws and is missing windows Baker just drills.

So glad the Browns didn't pick Rosen.

Man....

Rosen get stripped again. Holy hell.

I hope this isn't insane to ask, but how do we put Baker in a situation where he doesn't feel like this?

I just want to know where all of the Rosen supporters who were on this forum went. They’re practically disappeared from all threads of these forums. They were hell bent on Rosen being ‘THE GUY’ and I would have believed any person here betting their house on him succeeding.

It was like there was a hidden agenda we weren’t aware of that brought a bunch of Rosen supporters together....hmmm..

So sad.

Looking back on the rookie years of Baker and Rosen, once they hire some offensive wunderkind, will be marvelous.

Rosen will be fine, and so will Baker. In hindsight I just think Baker was the best fit for the Browns.
